THE WINCHESTER STAR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2016 B3 WINCHESTER FREDERICK COUNTY CLARKE COUNTY ELECTION 2016 10 TH DISTRICT LUANN BENNETT (D) U.S. House of Representatives Age: 57 Office sought: U.S. House of Representatives, Virginia’s 10th District Salary: $174,000 Party affiliation: Republican Place of birth: Springfield, Mass. Family: Married to husband, Chip, since 1982. Three children, three grandchildren. How long have you lived in your jurisdiction: 35 years Occupation: Congresswoman Political/government experience: Elected to first two- year term in the House of Representatives in November 2014. Served in the Virginia House of Delegates representing the 34th District from Jan. 13, 2010, to Nov. 10, 2014. Also was a senior staff member for former 10th District Rep. Frank Wolf and a senior official at the Department of Justice. Education: Middlebury College (B.A.); Georgetown Uni- versity (J.D.) Community/religious affiliations: Catholic What makes you the most qualified candidate for this position: For over 30 years, I have lived, worked, started a business, and raised my family in the 10th District. In the pub- lic and private sector, and as a legislator for the past 7 years (5 in the General Assembly and 2 in Congress), I have worked with you, our community, and my legislative colleagues to pro- duce results on creating a healthy economy, advancing 21st century jobs, expanding and promoting our technology com- munity, providing long-term transportation solutions without raising taxes, promoting 21st century healthcare solutions, fighting Lyme disease, working with the community to find solutions to the heroin epidemic, combating human traffick- ing, and reducing the tax burden on families and businesses. In Congress, I continued the bipartisan success I had in the Virginia General Assembly on jobs and technology, educa- tion, and health care and hit the ground running focusing on: l Stopping dangerous national security and defense se- quester cuts, restoring national security and defense fund- ing, and defending us from terrorist threats here and abroad; l Fighting for $600 billion in tax relief for our families and our small businesses; l Passing a landmark 5-year transportation bill for the first time in a decade; l Passing landmark heroin legislation and working with federal, state, and local law enforcement to fight the heroin epidemic; l Passed my amendment in the House that will increase funding for the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) Program; I fought alongside local community leaders and law enforcement to get a HIDTA designation for Frederick County; l Advancing Northern Virginia’s innovative technology sector and research & development (promoted growth of local Data Centers). Chair of the Research & Technology subcommittee, worked to pass a permanent R&D tax credit (something I also passed in the state legislature); l Working with our district’s diverse and wide-ranging ag- riculture community; l Helped to pass bipartisan human trafficking legislation (again continuing my work in the state legislature); l Helped to pass bipartisan Education Reform legislation for the first time in 15 years; l Helped pass legislation to help hire more veterans and prevent veteran suicide; l Working on cyber security issues and chairing 5 hear- ings on this subject in my subcommittee; l Protecting our federal employees and fighting for their earned benefits; l Protecting Second Amendment rights. In addition, I brought my successful Young Women Lead- ership program that I developed as a delegate in the Virginia General Assembly to Capitol Hill. To date, over 800 young women have been part of the program preparing to be our fu- ture leaders by meeting and hearing from women leaders in a variety of professions, including Shenandoah University Presi- dent Tracy Fitzsimmons and her staff. Nothing is more important than our national security. We live in a very unpredictable world where ISIS and other terror- ist groups continue to be on the march against the freedoms for which America stands. That is why we need leaders who recognize the threat and understand what it will take to defeat the enemy. I have consistently voted for our men and women in uniform and have supported the National Defense Authori- zation Act (NDAA) and a budget that would increase defense spending by $40 billion and ease the devastating defense se- quester cuts. I also co-sponsored a resolution passed in the House that declares what ISIS has done to religious minorities (Christians, Hindus, Yazidis and the Jewish faith) in the areas it currently occupies as “genocide.” My record working for our community has earned me a broad and diverse group of endorsements and support from every major business organization, including the U.S. Cham- ber, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAW- BO) plus the Fairfax Firefighters Union, the Virginia Police Benevolent Association, and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE). I have also been fortunate to receive endorsements from The Winchester Star and the Washington Post. Age: 63 Office sought: U.S. House of Representatives, Virginia’s 10th District Salary: $174,000 Party affiliation: Democrat Place of birth: Highland, Ill. Family: Three sons, one grandson How long have you lived in your jurisdiction: 35 years in Northern Virginia Occupation: President/owner of Bennett Group, a real- estate ser vices company Political/government experience: Member of the Vir- ginia Climate Change Commission and the Virginia Health Care Foundation Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, Eastern Il- linois University Community/religious affiliations: Christian What makes you the most qualified candidate for this position: My experience as a small business owner and working to tackle big issues facing Virginia are two of my biggest strengths that I look forward to bringing to Congress. I’ve spent my entire career in the private sector, starting and running a successful family business that has helped create job opportunities for more than 1,000 work- ers, and generated millions of dollars in economic develop- ment for our region. I understand how our economy works because I’ve lived it. In my public service, I’ve brought people together to tackle big issues. Then-Gov. Tim Kaine appointed me to the Virginia Climate Change Commission to work with leaders from both parties to help secure Virginia’s energy future. And I ser ved on the Virginia Health Care Foundation, which Sen. Mark Warner founded, to help provide basic health- care services to low-income Virginians. My business and public service experience has taught me that in order to solve problems, you have to work with everyone, even people you may not agree with, in order to make progress. Congress has forgotten that. Extreme par- tisanship, special interests and leaders unwilling to compro- mise have created gridlock that hurts our families and our businesses. The pragmatic, common-sense and consensus- building approach that I learned in business is the same ap- proach I’ll bring to Congress. What is your campaign platform: I have been outspo- ken this campaign about building an economy that works for everyone. That includes investing in our crumbling in- frastructure, raising the minimum wage, making it easier for our small businesses to operate, guaranteeing equal pay for equal work and reforming our tax code to make it fairer and simpler. I also will fight to keep our communities and our countr y safe and secure. I will work to maintain the strongest mili- tary in the world and to prepare 21st century solutions for the 21st centur y threats we face, such as strengthening our cyber-defenses. We also need to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of suspected terrorists, and strengthen our partnerships with our allies. Finally, education remains one of my priorities. I want to expand educational opportunities with universal pre-K, more affordable higher education, expanded career and technical training, and a renewed focus on our community colleges. And in our schools, I want to strengthen STEM educational opportunities to ensure that the next generation has the right skills for the jobs of tomorrow. THE WINCHESTER STARB4 Saturday, OctOber 29, 2016

Age: 44Of fice sought: Frederick

County School Board, Shawnee District

Position’s salary: $5,700 an-nually

Place of birth: WinchesterFamily: Wife, Angie, 15-year-

old daughter Kayla and 13-year-old son Tyler

How long have you lived in your jurisdiction: 12 years

Occupation: Author/speakerPolitical/government ex-

perience: Has represented the Shawnee District on the School Board for the past year

Education: Frederick Coun-ty Public Schools alumnus; bach-elor’s degree in psychology from Shenandoah University

Community/religious affil-iations: Past president of Win-chester Exchange Club; past board member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters; past board member of the Youth Development Center; member/teacher at Grace Com-munity Church; past treasurer of Top of Virginia Builders Associ-ation; former flag football coach for Frederick County Parks and Recreation; board member for the Winchester City Sheriff ’s Office Foundation

What makes you qualified for this position: I feel that I bring a unique perspective to the board. Not only was I educated by the Frederick County school sys-tem, I have two children who are enrolled in these schools now and I also visited and conducted writ-ing workshops and assemblies on a regular basis before joining the board. Being able to view our schools as a parent, former stu-dent, and guest teacher allows me to take into account all different points of views involved during our decision-making processes. Also, having over a decade’s expe-

rience in finance (Freddie Mac & First Bank) helps when discussing budget items.

What is your campaign plat-form: Safety will always be a main focus. We need to do whatever we can to provide a safe and secure environment where students and faculty can thrive. Being fiscally responsible is another responsi-bility we have. Spending decisions have to be looked at not just from a school’s perspective, but from the community’s perspective as well. From there, we need to cap-ture our students’ attention and give them what they need to be successful and reasons to want to be involved. We need to allow both students and faculty the free-dom to teach and learn in ways that work best for everyone. Fi-nally, we need to give support, confidence, and hope to our stu-dents and faculty. We want them to be the best they can be each day and to spread that attitude of encouragement outside of our school wall and into our commu-nity and beyond. We are prepar-ing our next generation of leaders and that is a serious responsibility.
