Confirmation 2018 – Some exciting news! And a Prayer

Request: We have 11 youth participating in our Confirmation 2018 class! Each of the kids has been paired with a mentor, a member of the congregation who is experienced and caring to help encourage them on their faith journey. Kids and Mentors: Natalie Bryant and mentor, Susan Hume Kareen Holstrom and mentor, Carolyne Givens Clara Lanesskog and mentor, Maisie Dawes Nick Lanesskog and mentor, Curt Viggers Nora Logsdon and mentor, Melanie Little Paige Ouellette and mentor, Beth Connor Ethan Rincon and mentor, Dave Little Allison Taquino and mentor, Pearl Viggers Connor Taquino and mentor, Roger Connor Jonah Tharpe and mentor, Ed Hume Carolyn Whale and mentor, Pam Bunce

We are so happy that these young people are putting effort into their faith journey, and grateful that their mentors have committed to supporting them. As members and friends, we ask you to pray for the young people in Confirmation, as well as their mentors and families. The Confirmation experience involves the entire congregation as we help our youth to be prepared to confirm the commitment to living a Christian life made for them by their parents when they were young.

Mix-Sups Return in February!

CUMC isn’t a church building – it’s a living community of creative, involved, Christian and very interesting people. Like me, I bet you’d like to get to know more people of our own fascinating community. Mix-Sups (a bit of a play on words) groups are the fun and easy way to do this! Each Mix-Sups group typically has 7 to 8 people who gather at a mutually

agreed time (typically, once a month) to socialize over a meal at the home of one of the group’s members, or at a restaurant. Each group has a convener who facilitates the planning of the first gath-ering and then watches as others in the group arrange subsequent gatherings. By the way: We are in need of volunteers to be conveners. If you have questions, contact Pam Bell at [email protected].

2018 Agenda for a Prophetic Faith Lecture Series a program of the Pomona Valley Chapter of Progressive Christians Uniting

Sunday, February 25, 2018 7:00 p.m. at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, 724 E Bonita Ave., San Dimas Amy Hunter: “I Drink my Coffee Black: What it Means to be Black in a Divided America” Amy writes, “I drink my coffee black so I will not forget the impact globally of colonization on people of color. The impact on health, infant mortality,

trauma, poverty, and violence are some of the stark similarities and patterns of oppression that are shared in the lives of Black, Latino, Indigenous, and Palestinian people. I have witnessed the strength of women and mothers; and the impact they are having on movements around the world. We all have a role to play to end racism and other forms oppression. Come join the movement for change and liberation.”

Sunday, March 11, 2018 7:00 p.m. at Claremont Presbyterian Church, 1111 N. Mountain Ave., Claremont Amir Hussain: “American Muslims in the Age of President Trump” Muslims, both within America and around the world, are the religious community that is most affected by the presidency of Donald J. Trump. Professor Hussain will talk about the challenges raised for American Muslims, including issues such as travel bans, Islamophobic tweets, and administrative appointments. He will also look at the realities of Muslim life in the United States.

Sunday, April 8, 2018 7:00 p.m. at La Verne Church of the Brethren, 2425 E St., La Verne Peter Dreier: “Beyond Trump – What Kind of America?” Dreier writes, “One of Donald Trump’s biggest accomplishments so far has been to galvanize a growing ‘resistance’ movement.… The big question is where is this movement going? It isn’t enough just to say ‘no’ to… the pro-corporate and racist agenda. Can the resistance movement go beyond protest? Can it…build a sustainable progressive movement that can make America a more humane, inclusive, and democratic society?”

Sunday, April 15, 2018 7:00 p.m. at Claremont United Church of Christ, 233 W. Harrison St., Claremont Ed Bacon: “Effective Justice Indignation” The danger in being outraged by the outrages of our times is drowning in our own anger. That leads us to play thoughtless roles in perpetuating the tribalistic polarization narrative in the United States today. There is an option that makes indignation not only righteous but effective. Explore with Ed Bacon the lessons he is learning in his new “Red state environment” in Alabama about blessing the space between us and our adversaries while being a progressive activist.

STEPHEN MINISTRY PROGRAM:

a personal testimony by Henry Jefferson The Stephen Ministry Program is designed to benefit individuals who are facing difficult life issues. It is essentially a ministry of service that utilizes what we call a ministry of presence. The Ste-phen Minister gives the care receiver an opportunity to talk freely in a trusting, nurturing and confi-dential environment. This atmosphere of loving trust enables the care receiver to feel supported in dealing with his or her life challenges. The Stephen Minister’s presence leads to a mutual flow of faith and trust. Both individuals – the Stephen Minister and the care receiver – benefit from this mutual relationship.

For me, the “aha” moment came when I realized the experience of being a Stephen Minister had enlightened me. I felt God was at work. And being a Stephen Minister led me to think about many of the same life issues that my care receiver was dealing with.

I invite you to consider being a Stephen Minister. This experience will help you grow in your faith journey. This experience will help you in ways you cannot anticipate. ~ Henry Jefferson

a call from Annabel Unland and Rev. Martha Morales We hope to begin a new Stephen Ministry Caregiver training soon. To do that we need one or two more members who are interested in offering a listening presence for someone who is going through a difficult time. The training involves a 2.5-hour interactive class each week for about 6 months here at church. It is a lay ministry of compassion and care that benefits both care receiver and caregiver. If you are interested in learning more about Stephen Ministry, please contact Annabel Unland ([email protected]) or Rev. Martha Morales ([email protected])

News from the Preschool at Claremont United Methodist Church Below is a picture of parents waiting in line to enroll their children on our first day of open enrollment. When I (Jeri Bollman, Director) arrived at 7:30 a.m. they were all here, some as early as 6:15 am. Within a half hour we had 36 parents in line. It took me an hour and half to get through the line. Pretty exciting stuff. :-)

The blue room (2 years): filled, for both days, within the first 12 minutes of enrollment! I know there will be lots of changes and move-ment but we are currently on a waitlist for ALL of our classrooms. Yay!

I just wanted to share the joy; we have come so far in the last 13 years and I am still honored God chose me for this ministry.

February is African American History Month Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achieve-ments by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history. To learn more, visit http://www.history.com/topics/black-history/black-history-month and http://www.africanamericanhistorymonth.gov/. Another cool website to check out is https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/project/black-history-and-culture, where you can see over 5000+ artifacts that are preserved online.

A Poem from CUMC’s Creative Peacemaking Committee

They have no need of our help So do not tell me Those haggard faces could belong to you or me Should life have dealt a different hand We need to see them for who they really are Chancers and scroungers With bombs up their sleeves Cut -throats and thieves They are not Welcome here We should make them Go back where they came from They cannot Share our food Share our homes Share our countries Instead let us Build a wall to keep them out It is not OK to say These are people just like us A place should only belong to those who are born there Do not be so stupid to think that The world can be looked at another way
