Then he let them cross the Red Sea dry-shod; in the desert he fed them with food from heav- en in the form of manna and quails; when they were thirsty he gave them an inexhaustible spring of water, bubbling from the rock. He gave them victory over enemies that attacked them; he made the Jordan flow backwards for them; he took the land he had promised them and divided it between them ac- cording to their tribes and clans. Although he had dealt with them so lovingly and generous- ly, the ungrateful people aban- doned the worship of God, as if they had utterly forgotten every- thing, and shackled themselves with the crime of idol-worship – not once but many times. Then God took us, although we were pagans, and irresistibly drawn towards dumb idols, if an- ything. He cut us off from the wild olive tree of our gentile nature and grafted us on to the true olive tree of the Jewish people, pruning away its existing branches and making us sharers in its grace, its richness, and the nourishment that came from its roots. Finally God did not spare his own Son but gave him up to benefit us all, a victim and fragrant offering to God to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify a people so that it could be his very own. All these things are not mere arguments but genuine signs of God’s love and God’s generosity. We men, on the other hand, are supremely un- grateful: we have gone far beyond the boundaries of all previous ingratitude. We pay no attention to God’s love, we do not recognise the scale of his generosity, but we spurn the source and giver of all these good things and practically hold him in contempt. Not even the outstanding mercy he shows to sinners moves us to order our lives and ac- tions according to his holy law. Clearly these acts of God deserve to be writ- ten down in the next generation, so that they are remembered for ever. Thus all who in future bear the name of Christians will recognise God’s goodness to us and will never at any time cease from offering praise to him. St John Fisher todays Reflection / Inspiration

The wonders of God

First of all God freed the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt, with many signs and wonders. Then he let them cross the Red Sea dry-shod; in the desert he fed them with food from heav-en in the form of manna and quails; when they were thirsty he gave them an inexhaustible spring of water, bubbling from the rock. CATHOLIC BISHOPS CALL FOR PROTECTION OF CHILDREN.

Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) president Archbishop Telesphore Mpun-du has called on the protection of Children and minors.

Speaking on behalf of other Catholic Bish-ops of Zambia during the opening of a one day workshop on Child protection held at Kapingila house on Monday 23rd January, 2017, Archbishop

Mpundu described the statistics on reported cas-es of abused children as a tragedy.

Archbishop Mpundu further called for the re-versal of the situation and announced that that the church stands in a singular position to spear-head the campaign.

“[I am informed that] every single month at the University Teaching Hospital 120 children below the age of 8 are abused. And these are numbers

of children whom we know about. These cases reported to the police and followed up. But a greater number is not even known. This is a trag-edy which must be reversed, and the church stands ready in a singular position to spearhead this campaign,” he said.

The ZCCB president further said that the cry of the Church is to mobilise everyone in the Church to fight the abuse of children.

“Let us put together whatever we have in terms of reflections to that we can move ahead. Our cry is to mobilise everyone in the church beginning from the family. Children are most abused by the people who know them,” he said.

“We have to mobilise Small Christian Commu-nities, Lay Apostolic Movements, the Clergy, the Religious, just everyone to fight child abuse,” he added.

The ZCCB president also spoke against con-spiracy silence on child abuse.

“There is conspiracy of silence in our society. Anything that elders do cannot go wrong. And if it goes wrong people try all ways to dismiss it. But in other parts of the world people are a lot more open about these things but here in Zam-bia and Africa in general we are silent ,” he not-ed.

Archbishop Mpundu also said that the situation of child abuse must be reversed, for the future of children in Zambia depends on them.

“The future of this country is not our children of tomorrow, [but] our children of today. Because

what happens to children today remains with them for rest of their lives. And this is contagious and goes from one generation to another. So protect the children,” Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu said.

“Our mission is out there. The mission of pro-tecting our children. The church is not a society of mutual admiration. We are the salt of the world. We are sent on mission especially in our 126 years of our Christianity [In Zambia] so that the world out there can work with us,” he said.

“Our population is literally young, so we must protect our present. We must do something so that these young people grow up in an environ-ment where they experience love and security,” Archbishop Mpundu emphasised.

And Secretary for the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors Monsignor Robert Oliver commended the Catholic Church in Zam-bia on its stance on the protection of children and minors.

The one day Child Protection workshop at Kapingila house in Lusaka which drew 46 partici-pants from all the 11 dioceses of Zambia was organised by Pope Francis’ 2014 set Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.

The Pontifical Commission goes around the world to promote local responsibility by assisting bishops, religious superiors and there confer-ences to develop guidelines, norms, and estab-lish safe environments for children through mutu-al sharing of best practices.

21 BENEFITS OF MAKING THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

The Sign of the Cross is a simple gesture yet a profound expression of faith. We present 21 benefits of making the Sign of the Cross:

2nd benefit: OPEN OURSELVES TO GRACE As a sacramental, the Sign of the Cross prepares us for receiving God’s blessing and disposes us to cooperate with His grace, according to Ghezzi.

To be Continued…

The Morning Offering and Intentions for February 2017:

God, our Father, I offer you my day. I offer you my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys and sufferings in union with the Heart of your Son, Jesus Christ, who continues to offer Him-self in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world.

May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my

guide and strength today so that I may witness to your love.

With Mary, the Mother of the Lord and of the Church, I pray especially for this month’s inten-tions as proposed by the Holy Father:

Comfort for the Afflicted. That all those who are afflicted, especially the poor, refugees, and marginalized, may find welcome and comfort in our communities.
