Adult Book Discussion

The May Book Club title is The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson .

The Book Club will meet Tuesday, May 12th from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. To sign out a book club selection, simply visit the library before the scheduled meeting date. You need to have a valid contact number prior to sign out and should have a library card.

Snacks and drinks are provided.

Back to School Supplies for Children

"I wish my teacher knew I don't have pencils at home to do my homework." This was what one child in Colorado told his teacher when she asked all of her students to write down one thing they wanted her to know about them.

This is an unfortunate reality for many stu-dents everywhere. Families that do purchase back to school supplies often spend as much as $50 per child.

Thanks to a grant from Target, the Coolidge Public Library will offer back to school sup-plies to children this summer. All children in grades K-12 are invited to come in each week between May 26 and July 18 for a back to

school supply. Children who come in every week will receive a different supply.

They are not required to have a parent with them. They must simply register at the front desk.

Supplies will range from pencils and crayons to spiral notebooks and scissors. Quantities will be limited.

Please call (520) 723-6030 with questions.

The Buried Giant—Adult Fiction (also available in audio and 3M eBook) By Kazuo Ishiguro

"You've long set your heart against it, Axl, I know. But it's time now to think on it anew. There's a journey we must go on, and no more delay..." The Buried Giant begins as a couple set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen in years. Sometimes savage, often in-tensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in nearly a decade is about lost memo-ries, love, revenge, and war. ~ Provided by publisher

God Help the Child —Adult Fiction By Toni Morrison

Spare and unsparing, God Help the Child—the first novel by Toni Morrison to be set in our current moment—weaves a tale about the way the sufferings of childhood can shape, and misshape, the life of the adult. At the center: a young woman who calls herself Bride, whose stunning blue-black skin is only one element of her beauty, her boldness and confidence, her success in life, but which caused her light-skinned mother to deny her even the simplest forms

of love. There is Booker, the man Bride loves, and loses to anger. Rain, the mysterious white child with whom she crosses paths. And finally, Bride’s mother herself, Sweetness, who takes a lifetime to come to understand that “what you do to children matters. And they might never forget.” ~ Provided by publisher A Crown for Cold Silver —Adult Fiction By Alex Marshall

Twenty years ago, feared general Cobalt Zosia led her five villainous captains and mercenary army into battle, wrestling monsters and toppling an empire. When there were no more titles to win and no more worlds to conquer, she retired and gave up her legend to history. Now the peace she carved for herself has been shattered by the unprovoked slaugh-ter of her village. Seeking bloody vengeance, Zosia heads for battle once more, but to

find justice she must confront grudge-bearing enemies, once-loyal allies, and an unknown army that marches under a familiar banner. ~ Provided by publisher

All The Old Knives—Adult Large Print Fiction (also available in audio & regular print) By Olen Steinhauer

Six years ago in Vienna, terrorists took over a hundred hostages, and the rescue at-tempt went terribly wrong. The CIA's Vienna station was witness to this tragedy, gathering intel from its sources during those tense hours, assimilating facts from the ground and from an agent on the inside. So when it all went wrong, the question had to be asked: Had their agent been compromised, and how? Two of the CIA's case offi-cers in Vienna, Henry Pelham and Celia Harrison, were lovers at the time, and on the night of the hostage crisis Celia decided she'd had enough. She left the agency, mar-

ried and had children, and is now living an ordinary life. Henry is still a case officer in Vienna, and has traveled to California to see her one more time, to relive the past, maybe, or to put it behind him once and for all. ~ Provided by publisher The Emerald Mile: The Epic Story of the Fastest Ride in History Through the Heart of the Grand Can-yon — Adult Non Fiction (also available in audio) By Kevin Fedarko

In the spring of 1983, massive flooding along the length of the Colorado River con-fronted a team of engineers at the Glen Canyon Dam with an unprecedented emer-gency that may have resulted in the most catastrophic dam failure in history. In the midst of this crisis, the decision to launch a small wooden dory named “The Emerald Mile” at the head of the Grand Canyon, just fifteen miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam, seemed not just odd, but downright suicidal.

The Emerald Mile, at one time slated to be destroyed, was rescued and brought back to life by Kenton Grua, the man at the oars, who intended to use this flood as a kind of hydraulic sling-shot. The goal was to nail the all-time record for the fastest boat ever propelled—by oar, by motor, or by the grace of God himself—down the entire length of the Colorado River from Lee’s Ferry to Lake Mead. Did he survive? Just barely. Now, this remarkable, epic feat unfolds. ~ Provided by publisher A Taste of Cowboy: Ranch Recipes and Tales from the Trail—Adult Non Fiction By Kent Rollins

Kent offers labor-saving breakfasts like Egg Bowls with Smoked Cream Sauce. For lunch or dinner, there’s 20-minute Green Pepper Frito Pie, hands-off, four-ingredient Sweet Heat Chopped Barbecue Sandwiches, or mild and smoky Roasted Bean-Stuffed Poblano Peppers. He even parts with his prized recipe for Bread Pud-ding with Whisky Cream Sauce. (The secret to its lightness? Hamburger buns.) Kent gets creative with ingredients on everyone’s shelves, using lime soda to cara-

melize Sparkling Taters and balsamic vinegar to coax the sweetness out of Strawberry Pie. ~ Provided by publisher

Chaos of War, Balance of Life: A Soldier's Journal from Afghanistan—Adult Memoir By Will Higginbotham

Chaos of War, Balance of Life is one sergeant's story throughout his deployment in Afghanistan. Vivid emotions that Will Higginbotham could not share with his men, instead, were shared in both prose and artistic sketches to his mother. Often penned in the stark aftermath or impending prelude to battle, this journal is a haunting and powerful tale of the struggle during wartime to do one's duty, yet to remain human. Higginbotham's hope was that this journal be used for good -- for veterans who need to know that they are not alone in their feelings and thoughts, for new soldiers who

have not yet experienced war, and for families and friends of veterans who want to know what their soldier may have experienced. Dedicated to all veterans (past, present, and future), with special recognition to those who have given all and for those who have suffered battle wounds and scarring that may or may not be visible to the naked eye. ~ Provided by publisher
