I've heard many speeches on seminars and gatherings, words from political figures, entrepreneurs and celebrities as they were trying to convey different types of wisdom at various aspects of life and career.

Usually I would only listen for the first two minutes of those speeches, then the rest of the time my thoughts wandered somewhere else.




I'd typically just let those words of wisdom pass over me.

I knew eventually- some speech would inspire me and perhaps help me open up my mind to some inspiring possibilities in life.




Late 2012, I was browsing for Harry Potter videos (yes, I am a 'Potterhead' too, as they call it) and found this one video recommendation, which was a speech video of the Harry Potter books' writer, J.K Rowling.

Interested and drawn in curiosity, I clicked the video which was Rowling's speech on Harvard commencement back in '08.




From the moment that the author spoke, I was hooked, amused and I cried with tears of amazement.

Rowling talked about how the whirlwinds of life shaped her virtues and who she is right now.

She discussed failures, hardships, self-belief and the power of imagination.




As stated by Rowling in that speech, her life before the success of Harry Potter wasn't easy.

She was almost drowning in poverty.

Her parents themselves were also poor; J.K was divorced at a young age with a daughter, she was almost jobless and going through depression.



Speech I Have Ever ReadDespite of those dark days, she found strength in her daughter and saw hope from an old typewriter.

From this speech, I've learned a lot from the author's wisdom.

That motivational and goal focused speech was more centered on two topics; failures and the power of imagination.




As quoted by Rowling, it would be impossible for one to live without failing, unless if you live so cautiously, that in a way you have already failed by default.

Those words opened up my mind and from that day onwards, I started to see no boundaries between myself and my dreams.




I myself am a writer struggling to get published, fighting against poverty, going through the dark parts in my life and have issues with the people surrounding me

I never knew that J K's words would become one of my strengths. I don't dream to succeed as much as she did, though, I do aim to reach my own version of success.




Rowling's speech was without a doubt, an inspirational one.

The people who were there at that commencement laughed, cried and clapped their hands.

It is no surprise when truth and wisdom were what this woman talked about.



Speech I Have Ever ReadThere were mind-opening realizations when I heard clever words from this successful woman who had been through the same struggles as I have been going though at this stage of my life.

At the end of this article you can probably see that I am not just writing this because Miss Rowling gave a motivational speech but because she is actually a role model to me.
