• ICC provides a forum for businesses & organizations to work together to examine the nature of the major shifts taking place in the world economy

• Representatives from several different countries around the world discuss issues related to international business events

When was it formed?• ICC was formed in 1919 by a group of

industrialists, financiers, and traders. They called themselves “the merchants of peace”

• They were determined to bring economic prosperity after WW1 had just devastated the world

• ICC started off with representatives from just 5 countries

• ICC’s headquarters are located in Paris, France

Main Purpose

• Created to serve world business by promoting trade & investment and open markets for goods & services

• Keeps the United Nations, World Trade Organization, etc. in touch with the views of international business

• ICC make’s rules conducted towards business across the borders. These rules are voluntary but are observed in business transactions & have become part of international trade

• Represents companies & business organizations of all sizes & in every region of the world

How ICC Works

• Cross border trade & investment- The Commission on trade & investment policy examines issues in business to sustain the economic recovery, job creation & sustainable development

• “The Commission” which is members from over 35 different countries meet twice a year sometimes including members from WTO &OECD

• Nomination- Each national committee or group may appoint delegates to represent at the meetings

• Twice a year there is a summit gathering which includes 300 international delegates

• ICC Banking Commission organizes regular seminars & conferences around the world during the year

Members

• Currently there are over 180 members from more than 120 countries who meet to discuss world issues & events

• Each country involved with the ICC has their own chamber of commerce- ICC Austria, ICC Canada, ICC India, which has their own board of members

• To become a member :

1) Through affiliation with an ICC national committee or group

2) By direct membership with the ICC International secretariat when a national committee/group hasn’t been established in your country

• ICC is funded by partnerships with the ICC National Committees & other sponsors

• Some of their 2014 sponsors include Go Socket, Trustweaver, Shell, etc.

• They are always looking for new sponsors

History

• There were no system of rules to govern trade, investment, finance or commercial relations in the early 20th century due to ww1 which led to the idea of the ICC- an organization to represent business everywhere

• President of the French ICC, Etienne Clementel established the international secretariat position & the international court of Arbitration in 1923

• In the 1920s they focused on reparations & war debts

• In 1946 ICC was awarded the highest level consultative status by the UN & since then has represented the private sector by engaging in a number of activities with the UN

• Today, they focus on subjects such as banking techniques, taxation, competition law, intellectual property rights, telecommunications technology & international investment & trade policy
