GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS &PERFORMANCE OF COUNTRIES

AT 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP

Page 2: The world cup & global competitive index

The Global Competitive Index (GCI) by the World Economic

Forum (WEF) "assesses the ability of countries to provide high

levels of prosperity to their citizens. This in turn depends on how

productively a country uses available resources. It also measures

the set of institutions, policies, and factors that set the

sustainable current and medium-term levels of economic

prosperity”. (Wikipedia)

In my opinion, a country with strong institutions would

automatically have a viable and developed economy bringing

prosperity to its Citizens. Similarly, since Football is a competitive

sport, I assume a competitive economy should reflect in the

quality of performance of such a country’s football team – my

hypothesis.

Particularly, I hope to establish a relationship between Country’s

performance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and their

respective GCI as released by WEF for the year 2013-2014.

This implies, a competitive Nation has

approximately 64% chance of winning a

match against a less competitive Nation

H0 is TRUE!

Page 16: The world cup & global competitive index

It therefore shows in some degrees, that a competitive Nation has 64% chance of

defeating a less competitive Nation. This fact is even more evident as teams qualify

for more competitive stages.Particularly, Germany ranked 4th in the World defeated Argentina ranked 104th in the 2014

FIFA World Cup Final. The farther apart competing Nations are on the GCI ranking, the more a competitive Nations is

likely to win.
