”Drones mischaracterize what these things are. They are not dumb.

They are not unmanned. They are remotely piloted aircrafts.”

‘Computers do things more precisely and faster than humans … ‘

"Computers do things more precisely and faster than

humans, but we need humans to deal with uncertainty. It's this combination that interests me.“

"People are running around, relying on intuition, and

accidents happen. I want to make that go more

smoothly.“Prof. Mary Cummings

Drones - LogisticsMatternet Concept : a network of Delivery Drones• Matternet wants to build networks for “micro-transportation” that will

allow unmanned aerial vehicles to ferry all sorts of goods across long distances, especially in places where the roads either suck or are perpetually crammed full of commuters.

• Network of landingstations on the roof of the buildings

Drones – Charity in developing countries

MATTERNET

• In Africa, 85% of roads are unusable in rain season• Need for JIT medical delivery (blood, medicines,…)• Medical Supply Vehicle:

• vertical take-off and landing• Radius 10 km / payload 2kg

• Landing stations: delivery + automatic battery swaps• Cost per mision (2kg/10km) = 24 cents• Testing is done / possitive results

Drones for emergency missions at sea• A drone equipped with three Life preservers

that could be dropped down to rescue drowning victims

• Using heat-sensingcameras to detect the exact location of victims, even in the darkness.

• The drone will charge its batteries at a solar-powered charging station on the ship.

Drones – Security• Two years ago, a Japanese security firm ‘Secom’ has developped a drone that

will track burglars.• Drone has been designed to fly to the scene of a break-in and wait until the

perpetrator tries to leave. Drone will hover and record images• Drone can do license plate recognistion

Essential requirements considered for RPAS integration• RPAS should be able to operate in airspace, mixed with a variety of manned

aircrafts under VFR (Visual Flight Rules) or IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) adhering to the requirements of the specific airspace layer in which they are operating.

• RPAS must comply with the Communication, Navigation an Surveillance requirements applicable to the class of airspace in which they operate.

• Three pre-requisites to safeguard the total aviation safety system:• RPAS must be approved by a competent authority according

to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) • RPAS operators must hold a valid RPAS operator certificate• Remote pilots must hold a valid pilot license

Closing Statements• Countries with more relaxed UAV laws are good candidates for

commercialisation and are a proving ground for developed technologies.

• There is a growing use of UAVs in the agricultural sector, surveillance sector and in transport & logistics sector.

• Public concerns of privacy and legal liability are still there. • Expanding utilization of UAVs for both the governmental and

commercial sectors will further drive demand.• Greatest challenge is posed by a “Sense/Detect and Avoid" solution.• Increasing autonomy in flight control systems will result in higher

safety with lower operating costs, however it requires solid contingency plans.

• UAVs will be more efficient and less costly. In other words, more capability at less cost will encourage more market growth !
