THE WORLD RAMAYAN CONFERENCE 2016 1. INTRODUCTION The World Ramayan Conference 2016 was organised between December 21-23 at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Shri Ramleela Samiti Garha, Jabalpur with the initiative, inspiration and blessings of PP Swami Satyamitranand Giriji as chief patron. Conference was held under patronage of Swami Kalyandasji, Swami Shyamdasji, Swami Akhileshwaranandji, Swami Girishanandji and Sadhvi Gyaneshwari Didi Ji of the Brahmarshi Mission Samiti. The event was organised under the auspices of Ministry of Culture, State Government of Madhya Pradesh, India and was supported by the ICCR, MEA New Delhi, IGNCA, World Association of Vedic Studies, Texas and the Municipal Corporation of Jabalpur. The WRC was organised with the objective of promoting the message of universal brotherhood, love, peace and right conduct contained in the Ramayana for welfare of humanity. 1. INTRODUCTION

The World Ramayan Conference 2016 was organised between December 21-23 at

Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Shri Ramleela

Samiti Garha, Jabalpur with the initiative, inspiration and blessings of PP Swami

Satyamitranand Giriji as chief patron. Conference was held under patronage of Swami

Kalyandasji, Swami Shyamdasji, Swami Akhileshwaranandji, Swami Girishanandji

and Sadhvi Gyaneshwari Didi Ji of the Brahmarshi Mission Samiti. The event was

organised under the auspices of Ministry of Culture, State Government of Madhya

Pradesh, India and was supported by the ICCR, MEA New Delhi, IGNCA, World

Association of Vedic Studies, Texas and the Municipal Corporation of Jabalpur.

The WRC was organised with the objective of promoting the message of universal

brotherhood, love, peace and right conduct contained in the Ramayana for welfare of

humanity.

A series of associated activities were also organised, such as:

• One lakh recitations of Sunderkand was held for the success of the Conference. In

addition to Jabalpur, Recitation was performed all over including Thailand, US,

Pre-Conference Events

• A Pictorial & Mural exhibition depicting

the Ramayana related photographs was

inaugurated on 18/12/2016 by Dr. Swati

Sadanand Godbole, Hon'ble Mayor of

Jabalpur. Exhibition was supported and

organised by IGNCA, New Delhi under

guidance of Dr. Prof. Virendra Bangroo.

• A kalash procession from Sacred river Narmada to the venue of the Conference

was brought and enshrined.

• Publication of a Souvenir.

• A number of cultural events related to the Ramayana were also organised.

• Renowned experts on Ramayana from various parts of the world, scholars

and academicians, government officials, executives from the industry,

media persons, artists, and other lovers of the Ramayana attended the

Conference. The audience on each day numbered more than 1500.

• Well known experts from Canada, India, Indonesia, Mauritius, South

Africa, Thailand, Trinidad, USA and other places actively participated in

the Conference.

• Prime Sessions with discourses (pravchan) from respected saints and

special lectures were organised every evening which were followed by

performances by renowned artists.

On 20th December prime session Shri Mukul Kanitkar delivered his lecture on

Gurukul Parampara and Ramayana, the need of today.

On the same evening prime session Sushri Mandakini Ramkinkar delivered

her pravachan on sunderkand.

CONFERENCE WAS UNIQUE AND EXTRAORDINARY

The whole conference area was eco-friendly and flex free. It included

world class presentation in academic, literary, cultural and traditional

sessions. All sessions were full of interest and were high quality. This was

the first conference of such caliber. Whole town of Jabalpur turned in to

Ramayana arena and conference became talk of the town and even state.

2. INAUGURAL SESSION

• The welcome address was delivered by the Organising Chairman Shri Ajay

Vishnoi. He gave the background of the organisation of the Conference,

mentioned the main objectives and welcomed the dignitaries, experts from

• Addressing the Conference, HE Shri Shivraj Singh Ji Chauhan, Chief Minister

of the Madhya Pradesh, mentioned at length about the essence of the wisdom

contained in the Ramayana. He said that Ramayana guides us about the right

conduct in this materialistic world and offers solution of every problem which

we face in our lives. He said that if we follow the message and advice contained

in the Ramayana then there will be peace and harmony in the house, in the

society and in the world.

participants and congratulated the organisers for organising such an important

events in an excellent manner.

welcoming and thanking faculties and delegates on behalf of town of Jabalpur.

3. ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INDO-THAI RAMAYAN FORUM

It was decided to establish an Indo-Thai Ramayana Forum under the auspices of

the Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, Rani Durgawati University,

Jabalpur, India and the Thai-Bharat Cultural Lodge, Bangkok, Thailand. The

objectives of the (ITRF ) will be:

• To provide a convenient platform to scholars, academicians, writers, artists and

others associated with the Ramayana for sharing of experiences and their

creative work.

• To promote the message of right conduct and happiness in the Society.

• To organise various programmes like seminars, performances and other

cultural events concerning the Ramayana.

• To raise awareness about various versions of the Ramayana including those

used in rural societies.

influence and outreach of the Ramayana, the historical, social, cultural,

environmental, literary, scientific and other aspects of the Ramayana etc.

o Ram and the Ramayana in Africa by Er. Shri Komal C. Jain, South Africa

o Shri Jain detailed that the influence of the Ramayana is evident in several

countries of Africa . Names of places and persons in countries like Botswanaa,

Kenya, Somalia etc include the words such as Ram, Sita, Man Sita. Some

inhabitants feel pride in being associated with these names. It is important to

study these influences in greater detail.

o The Ramayana on the need of a proper leader- Dr. Stephen Knapp USA

Dr. Knapp said that it is necessary to understand what type of leader the society

needs, the Ramayana gives the answer. The Ramayana shows the characteristics

of a proper governance, proper judiciary system, risk and damage control

mechanism, collective development process etc. The Ramayana emphasises

upon truthfulness and virtue.

o Thus, Ramayana is the living document that guides our society in the right

direction.

o Indian Art of war in Epic period- Maj Gen Shri G. D. Bakshi, Army Expert

Lord Rama was a warrior and the Ramayana is also a story of the war. As a

warrior, Lord Rama fought for truth. There was no proxy war. Military science

was well developed and a multipolar environment was created.

o Theory of incarnation-There were two schools of history about incarnation- one

believed that the forces of history shape the events , individuals were just labels

while the other believed that great leaders shape the events. The Indian school is

the amalgamation of these both schools. It believes both in the leader and the

forces of history.

o The Co Chairman Dr. Rajendra Arun, Mauritius said that even parmatma is

incomplete without Shakti. Seeta is always associated with Rama. In other

words, the ideals of Rama and the ideals of Seeta are always combined together.

o Dr. Arun said that Mauritius has already established organisations to promote

the social, cultural and spiritual ideals of the Ramayana.

o The Chairman, Padmbhushan Dr. Satyvrat Shastri Ji spoke about the word

Ramayan comprises of two parts-Rama and Ayan which means Rama's path.

Rama is the symbol of our reverence and faith.

o Ramkatha is evident everywhere. It is popular in all societies, irrespective of

religion and geography.

o The Ramayana is a masterpiece of literature. It has influenced and continues to

influence several excellent works of art and literature. The Ramayana is an

immortal book which is poetry, lyric, history and several other forms of

expression of human feelings.

• Lav Kush in local mythology -Acharn Kittipong Booonkerd, Thailand

o In Thailand the Ramayana is well known through mythology and folk lore.

The city of Lopburi is also known as the city of Luv or Lavpuram. The city

was also known as Lovodayapura.

o It is also said that the city of Lopburi was given as a gift to Hanuman Ji by

Lord Rama.

o There are several places associated with Lord Rama in Thailand.

• Kakawin Ramayana- a great mahakavya -Acharn Darmayasa, Indonesia

o In Indonesia, specially in Jawa and Bali, people love Ramayana very much.

The Indonesian Ramayan is known as Kakawin Ramayana.

o People start their work by saying Om swastiastu. Many people recite the

Ramayana everyday. Ramleela is played every full moon. Several names

including the words Seeta, Rama and other characters of the Ramayana are

quite popular in Indonesia.

o Some couplets of the Kakawin Ramayana are very popular among the

leaders of the country. President Suharto used to quote a couplet quite often.

o People love names like Ram and Laxman.

o In Kakawin Ramayana first 20 shlokasares identical to the

BhattikavyaRamayan. Use of alankar is prominent in the Kakawin

Ramayana. The glory of cow is mentioned. There is a focus on sadhu,

dharma and prayojan here prayojan means to reduce misdeed.

o The principles of the Arthshatra are mentioned in Ramayana

• Acharn Srisurang, Thailand, Co Chairperson made a presentation on

Ramakien: The Ramayana seen with the Thai eyes and concept. She described

several aspects of the Ramakien and said that the Thai version of the Ramayana

is not a translation it is a new composition based upon the story of the

Ramayana. It has the Thai identity which emphasises that the Buddhist law of

karma and transitions all are subject to changes, nothing is permanent.

• The Chairperson Dr. Ramdas Lamb, USA spoke about the Adhyatm

Ramayana : Tulsidas's true inspiration. He said that Tulsidas derived huge

inspiration from the Adhyatm Ramayana.

• Ram and Seeta cannot be separated-kidnapped Seeta was maya.

• Bhakti is sole requirement of reaching God, caste or caste criterion are not the

basis. Rama's devotees Shabri, Nishad, Jatayu, Sugreev, Hanuman, Vibhishan

were of different caste.

Jati pati pooche nahin koi, Hari ko bhaje so Hari ka hoi.

• He emphasised upon the importance of satsang which enhances devotion and

added that this Conference is also a satsang.

Application of Longinus Theory of Sublimity to Ramayana; The Hymns of Himalaya

: a critique- Prof Dr. Neelanjana Pathak / Dr Rinkoo Wadhera

Prof. Dr. Neelanjana Pathak.

o Dr. Neelanjana Pathak presented a critical appreciation of the book -The Hymns

of Himalyas by Dr. Akhilesh Gumashta. She said that the hymns is free from

triviality of expression and disarrangement of words. Longinus insisted that

greatness in art ensure its appeal to all men in all ages. It is a sublime work

displaying rare breath and catholicity of appeal which is evident in every

reading or The hymns of Himalyas. A sublime work is a timeless treasure in

which the emotional fervor of Bhakti is the main force behind.

• Insight into the nature of time as expressed in and through the Ramayana by

Dr. David Scharf , USA

• Mr. Scharf described the concept of time as perceived in the Ramayana. Every

human is mortal and the one who has taken birth on earth shall die one day. The

elements of past, present and future are mingled in the Ramayana. Ramayana

unfolds in temporal sequence. Time is not destroyed.

• Ram is an avtar of Vishnu so He does not die a human death, He has to take

Maha Samadhi .

• Here Time (Kaal himself appears as a deity. He requests Lord Rama to return to

His abode. As time is different entities from God and the different creatures, it is

kept moving. If God did not follow for the rule of mortality how would human's

do so? So it is like a piece of puzzle which is fixed by Kaal.

• As no one can force God to do precisely what He has to do , it is an humble

request to Rama, not an order from heaven to return because the heaven is also

incomplete without Ram ( as Vishnu). As it all sum up in that every human

• Mr. Scharf also discussed the nature of time with the concept of Scientists like

Prof. Neil Bohr and others.

• Rama lives in the hearts of the people. He is an embodiment of devotion and

faith of the people. Themantrurja appears as Agni in Rama. It proves that

purusharth can fight the daiv.

• The Chairperson Dr. Sukalyan Sengupta made a presentation on -

Environmentalism in the Ramayana. He said that there is strong emphasis on

preserving the eco system in the Ramayana. He said that the environment is

witness to all happenings and quoted the examples of Plants and birds.

• He also said that there is a difference between van and aranya

Van includes man-made plantation which is modified to meet human needs but

Aranya is natural and undisturbed by man.

• There are hymns requesting the plants to reveal their medicinal properties.

SESSION FOUR

Topic-Associated arts in the Ramayana

Chairperson - Dr. Y. P. Singh, Ayodhya Shodh Sansthan, Ayodhya

• The Chairman explained the work being done by the AyiodhyaShodhSansthan

with a slide show. The Sansthan has recognised and brought to the people

several activities concerning the Ramayana. Mr. Singh showed some rare

photographs of Ramleelataken during the freedom struggle. He said that the

history of the freedom movement can be easily understood by studying the

Ramleela performances during the period. He also showed pictures of

Ramleelas organised in different places with warm participation of the people.

• The IGNCA is an organising partner of the Conference. The Centre has also

organised an exhibition of some very special paintings related to the Ramayana.

The exhibition showed the influence of the Ramayan on several cultures in India

and abroad.

• Dr. Molly Kaushal of the IGNCA, informed that UNESCO has recognised the

Ramleela as a heritage. Crossing the barriers of religion and cast, Ramleela has

made a huge impact on the society. The KheriyaRamleela is organised by the

Muslims. The organisers and the artists remain pious, pray by offering namaz,

do not abuse others and live a simple life.

Topic: The influence of the Ramayana

In the begging of his speech the Chairman mentioned that science is a part of

Ramayana. Lord Vishnu was born in human form (Rama) on earth to share the human

feelings of happiness and sadness and make a connection between them, but we keep a

distance from him by treating and praising him as a Lord.

The story of Rama & Seeta creates a connection between human and God. We can't

please God only by praying, God will be happy if we do something to uplift

humankind. The Atankvadis are similar to the Rakshas-both attack innocent civilians

and the solution is similar to what Hanuman Ji did to Lanka.

Mahatma Gandhi was strongly influenced by Lord Rama . He said “Ram is my

saviour”. Ram is a better fighter then Ravan, Ram's fight is for spiritual victory and

Ravan'sfor Physical win. Gandhi Ji also fought the war of independence on moral

grounds.

§ Body is made up of five component (Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Sky or Ether).

The components in isolation are treated as Non – Living, their combination

forms balanced life

§ Body and Solar system both are creating energy all the time whether we are

awake or at sleep. Disturbances in the system lead to disaster like flood,

earthquake etc.

The Chairperson Dr. Usha Devi Shukla, Durban spoke on – The Ramcharitmanas and

the evolution of Rambhakti in South Africa. She said that the Ramcharitmanas is very

popular in South Africa. It is a very important source of bhakti.

Several programmes concerning the events related to Lord Rama are organised by the

people in which the people participate actively. In addition to the Indian settlers, the

local population also takes keen interest in the events.

• The Co-Chairperson spoke on -A Leela style

of performing Ram Katha: the traditional Caribbean Ram Leela. She said that

the Ramleelaa has been designated as a cultural heritage by UNESCO.

• There are about twenty Ramleela parties in Trinidad and the Ramleela is

performed in the open air.

• The Ramleela performances are highly participative in nature. The community

members come together and totally immerse themselves in devotion. Ramleela

is a mahayagya. It begins with prayers and with the hoisting of the hanuman Ji's

flag.

• Ramkatha is taught in universities in Trinidad, We wish to have UN Ramayan

Day

• Ramayan tourism in India- Dr. Ramavtar Sharma, Chairman, National

Committee, Ramayan Circuit

• Shri Sharma described the places connected with the Ramayana and informed

that research work is being done about all such places.

• The project of Ramayana circuit is progressing well. All the places described in

the Ramcharitmanas are real and have same existence where they were in the

Ramayana. These places should be identified and protected because the

Ramayana is the need of society.

• Dr. Gumashta made a comparison between the writings of Mahaprabhu and

• Dr. Stephen Knapp USA Spoke on the Ramayana as the need for a proper

leader. He explained the result of a leader less society and what a king is meant

to be explained through some of the characters of Raja Ram.

o The Ramayana is the real treasure of India. It conveys several key messages. In

Ramrajya, there was no killing by creatures, clouds rained at the proper time

and in adequate measure, people never told lies, criminal mentality was

eliminated or at least drastically reduced.

• The author explained their extensive research about the geographical evidence of

the MahendraGiri and gave geographical evidence of the hill from where Shri

Hanuman leaped to Lanka in search of Seeta.

• It is started in the Kishkindakand ( stanza 67) of Valmiki Ramayana that lord Rama

crossed the sea to cover distance of 100 yojan by leaping from the Mahendragiri

peak.

o The Co-chairperson Shri Nilesh Oak spoke on 'When did the Ramayana

happen?'

o The speaker quoted swami Vivekanand who had said in 1891 that History

isdisorganised. History should be studied scientifically.

o The speaker firmly said that Ramayana happened not even a day late than 10000

BCE. He quoted several proofs to support his statement which included

astrological references in the Valmiki Ramayan, the description of the sky and

weather, the position of nakshatras and stars etc. He gave a number of scientific

explanations consistent with the description in the Ramayana to justify his

statement.

o Dr. Akhilesh Gumashta, Jabalpur spoke on the topic of "Tao of Ramayana."

o He brought out some salient features of the teachings of Lord Buddha-who is

respected as an incarnation of lord Vishnu in Hindu mythology. The speaker

highlighted the basic truth that all religions lead to the same God and the

humanity needs to work in harmony for achieving happiness.

• ChaudahBaras Ram Vanvasi -Dr. Rajesh Shrivastava, Bhopal

o The speaker mentioned about the positive and negative aspects of characters.

Manthara and Kakeyi are negative characters. Without the evilness of Manthara

and Kaikeyi, there would have been no Ramayan. Their actions could have

Topic-Some cultural aspects of Ramayana

• The Chairperson spoke about the influence of Ramayana. He said that no story

has travelled more than Ramkatha. He said that the influence of Valmiki

Ramayana is obvious in Thailand. There are several variations of the Ramkatha

in the country.

• Connection between Lord Rama and Lord Buddha can be easily seen in the

temples in Thailand .

Co-Chairperson –Smt Vinod Bala Arun, Mauritius

• The biggest support of immigrants in Mauritius was Ram Chalisa and

Hanuman Chalisa.

• The first president of Mauritius was of Indian origin known as Chacha (Uncle)

Ram Gulam.

• She mentioned that the Comparative study of various Ramayana were taken up

as a study material in the school curriculum in Mauritius and The Parliament

passed a bill to establish the Ramayana centre in Mauritius in 2001.

SESSION TEN

• Observation about the WRC 16 -Mr. JeffreyArmstrong, Canada

o Mr. Armstrongthanked the organisers for organising the WRC in such a nice

manner. He expressed his special thanks to Dr. Gumashta and hoped that the

process should continue.

o The participants from Thailand presented a set of albums on the Footprints of

Lord Ram in Thailand to Shri Y. P. Singh of Ayodhya Shodh Sansthan. Shri

The Chairman suggested some steps which should be taken to utilise the

momentum generated by the WRC with the objective of promoting peace, love,

• The Chairman lauded the initiative taken in establishment of the Indo-Thai

Ramayana Forum. He hoped that the Forum will build the foundation for

promoting global interaction in Ramayana related matters. He said that similar

multilateral cooperation need to be promoted.

• The Chairman suggested that draft papers covering the following areas should

be prepared for further organising and developing the work:

v Tourism v Humanity

v Art and Culture v Research

• The experts and participants also gave their suggestions which are included in

the document The Way Ahead.

THE WAY AHEAD

a. The participation of scholars, artists and citizen from all walks of life in the

World Ramayana Conference 2016 and its associated meetings has been

unprecedented. Scholars from many parts of the world have taken keen interest

in the Conference. They have made contributions on various aspects of the

contents of the Ramayana. Their contribution have not only enhanced our

understanding of the contents and beauty of the great epic, they have also

brought several lesser known aspects described in various versions of the

Ramayana.19

• WRC 16 has inspired the participants to contemplate on the various issue of

contemporary interest which are summarised below:

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL

• The Ramayana is a great source of practical wisdom for promoting human

happiness, love and peace in the society. It provides directions for the right

conduct and demonstrates the victory of good over evil. Awareness about the

message contained in the great epic needs to be raised further for the welfare of

the human society.

• For this purpose, appropriate programmes conveying the message of right

conduct and human happiness contained in the Ramayana should be launched.

Such programmes may comprise of short presentations, popular lectures and

group discussions at frequent intervals, performances like musical dance,

recitals,drama,Ramleela, shadow play and other popular shows and any other

form of popular expression.

• Involvement of youth in raising awareness about the message contained in the

Ramayana should be facilitated.

• The role of women in spreading the message of love, peace and happiness

contained in the Ramayan in the household and in the society should be

encouraged and facilitated.

• The advantage of modern technology should be effectively harnessed for

facilitating the outreach of the programmes to the masses.

• More cultural exchanges for Ramayana related activities should be facilitated.

GOOD GOVERNANCE

• A theme paper on the message contained in the Ramayan on Good Governance

should be prepared and widely circulated to the interested audience.

• Efforts should be made to effectively convey the message of upright moral

conduct, honesty, service and sensitivity for the common people contained in

the Ramayana. These basic human values should constitutethe ideal for the

right conduct of the people involved in administration, programme

management, public service, social work and business etc.

ACADEMIC AND LITERARY

• A concise consultation paper on the relevance of the message contained in the

facilitated by the government, industry and concerned organisations.

• Literary competitions on Ramayana related topics should be organised from

time to time.

• The following lists should be prepared:

o A list of universities where Ramayana related topics are taught.

o A list of old Ramayana manuscripts available

o A list of Ramayana scholars in the world

TOURISM AND ENTERTAINMENT

• Organisations involved in the Performing Arts related to the Ramayana should

be encouraged to present shows in various functions organised by the

Governments, business houses and the public.

• Ramayana Circuit Tourism Plans should be prepared and promoted by

Governments, Tourism sector and other concerned partners for facilitating

tourism promotion.

• RamayanaMelas should be organised from time to time.

• A list of cultural organisations involved in Ramayana related programmes

should be prepared.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE WRC

ORGANISING COMMITTEE (OC)

• The momentum generated by the events such as the World Ramayana

Conference should be properly utilised for promoting human happiness, love

and peace. The OC should provide a common platform for all concerned

organisations, associations, experts, artists and others associated with the

• The establishment of the Indo-Thai Ramayan Forum is a welcome step in this

direction. The activities of the Forum will further enhance interest in bilateral

and multilateral fora for spreading the message of right conduct for individual,

family ,society and the governments . Working Groups should be established to

finalise the modalities of the Fora.

• Efforts should be made to organise meetings of interested Ramayana related

organisations and other associates for sustaining and accelerating the

momentum generated by their activities.

• Cooperation of the academic world, artists, interested individuals and groups,

Government and Government supported organisations, media and all

interested groups or individuals should be solicited for promoting Ramayana -

related activities.

• Ramayans printed in other languages should be translated in Hindi and made

available to the Hindi speaking people at economic price.

• A Ramayana museum should be established at Jabalpur to commemorate the

organisation of the World Ramayana Conference here. All versions of the

Ramayana, tapes, cassettes, CDs related to the Ramayana should be kept there.

• A draft paper should be submitted to the appropriate Government authorities

for including the elements of the outcome of the WRC 16 for preparation of

Cultural Policy.

• The UN and its concerned agencies should be approached for promoting the

values contained in the Ramayana and for an appropriate day as the declaring

the Sunderkand (for Maximum Recitations in the World) as World Heritage.

In this connection unique recitations of Akhand Ramayana throughout the

World may also be recommended as World Heritage and also in future

Ramayana Day may be declared by the UN.

CONCLUDING SESSION

• Sadhvi Gyaneshwari Didi welcomed and thanked the participants who came

from many places in India and abroad to participate in the WRC 16 organised

on the occasion of the golden jubilee year of the theatrical performance of the

INDO-THAI RAMAYAN FORUM

The panel discussed the proposal to establish an Indo-Thai Ramayana Forum

under the auspices of the Thai Bharat Cultural Lodge, Bangkok and Chulalongkorn

The Objectives, Working method and the suggested further steps involved are

mentioned below:

OBJECTIVES

• To provide a convenient platform to scholars, academicians, writers, artists and

others associated with the Ramayan for sharing of experiences and their

creative work.

• To promote the message of right conduct and happiness in the Society.

• To organise various programmes like seminars, performances and other

cultural events concerning the Ramayan.

• To raise awareness about various versions of the Ramayan including those used

in rural societies.

WORKING

• Establishing a web site for sharing and promoting Indo-Thai cooperation for

study of Ramayan related topics and for exchange of experiences and expertise.

• Organising Ramayan related seminars , performances, melas and other

activities.

• Publishing Ramayan related writings.

STEPS FORWARD

• Creating a coordination group to identify the areas of cooperation and

recommending further activities. AcharnKittipong will establish a Group on the

Facebook for initiating the exchange of views.

• The participants from Thailand suggested that Thailand can host the Forum in

the year 2018. Members of the Forum from India can consider hosting a meeting

in 2017, if required.
