ANOTHER MILE-STONE

March, 1932

ONCE more the year has rolled round, and we are back to March. The first. of each year is not welcomed by everyone, because we

are supposed to make new resolutions, and we are supposecl to keep them-but we don't; because our mail, heavier than it has been for many months, contains practically nothing but bills, bills, bills-people wanting our money. Parting with money makes most people sad, but amidst all the bills and all the accounts you will find your copy of the "ALUMNUS" and that ought to cheer you up. If it doesn't, then, we fear, there is no hope. You've lost your college spirit.

As for "THE ALUMNUS", the groundwork having been done in the first issue, there remained only the building up in some departments; the strengthening in others; and the addition of yet other sections to meet various requirements. Even this necessitated a vast amount of time and labor.

It must need be, in a publication such as this, where only spare hours and that of very few people, can be given to its welfare, that the growth will be slow. We trust, however, that our readers unaware of the difficulties, financial and otherwise, which a magazine of this kind must labour under, will not expect too much in its early years, but rather trust that those who control its destinies will in time, with the help and co-operation of all, make out of it, what we all hope and desire it may become-the greatest alumni publication in Canada.

' ' ' HELPING OURSELVES

In the early days of December a letter, over the signature of KENNETH J. McARDLE, went forth to all Alumni setting forth the advisability of helping the "ALUMNUS" and yourself by advertising in its pages. · We believe we are right in saying that there was no desire, on the part of the sender, that those who have nothing to advertise or who have nothing to gain by advertising, should be led to buy space, but we do believe, and not without sufficient reason, that there are not a few of our members who could with profit to themselves, their business and to the Association, advertise in "THE ALUMNUS."

When one throws a stone into the water, the ripples formed on the surface of the water travel on and on and on . They never grow into a tidal-wave; yet they grow wider and wider, are ever in motion and no man knows where they will end. · So it is with advertising. An ad in the pages of "THE ALUMNus" will not bring the city of Montreal crowding to your doors, but being there it may catch the eye of someone seeking your services. If your service be good, it is talked about amongst friends, and when they in turn need service they will go to you ... and so the ever widening circle grows.

If you have anything to sell, whether merchandise or service-advertise in the "ALUMNUS."

EVENTS 01= THE YEAR

LT.-CoL. GEORGE P. VANIER, D.S.O., M.C., A.D.C., '06, formerly attached to the Canadian Office of the League of Nations, Geneva, has been appointed Secretary, High Commissioner's Office, London. "THE ALUMNUS" joins in extending congratulations to this illustrious son of Loyola.

The enviable honor of being created King's Counsel has come to two Loyola graduates. JoHN D. KEARNEY, '16, and MAURICE VERSAILLES, '17. Congratulations.

Whether this is the first occasion on which a graduate of Loyola has been elected Chief Magistrate of one of our large Canadian cities, we cannot say, nevertheless, we record with pleasure the election of E. GRIMES MuRPHY, '14, as Mayor of Fort William, Ont. Later reports bring us the interesting news that Mr. Murphy was the unanimous choice of the Twin City.

MAJOR H. PANET, class of '16, of the Royal Engineers, who has been for some time in India, is at present in Canada, on leave of absence and paid a visit to the college recently.

C. P. McT AGUE, resident of Windsor, Ont ., has been appointed to the board of The Trust & Guarantee Co.

The H.M.S. "Skeena" which was brought to Canada during the past year came out under the command of VICTOR G. BRODEUR, R.N.

Each year witnesses a constant parade of alumni to the altar, to be united in the bonds of matriomny. This year we offer our best wishes to the following:

As the moving spirit behind the endeavour to arouse interest in speedboat racing in Quebec, Hector Decary and his brother Gerald have brought the Iroquois Yacht Club right to the point in this line of sport. This is merely another manifestation of the initiative of Loyola's sons.

The lure of the gridirion hasn't lost its fascination for Eddie Counot, '27, yet. Last season he captained the Quebec Swimmin_g Club in their quest for rugby laurels. Gavin Power, '29, was also a team-mate.

The sporting pages have recentl y been giving considerable space to Harry Pangman, '27, whose prowess in cross-country ski-ing won him a place on the Olympic team. Congratulations.

Latest reports from the Universities are as follows: CLAYTON, RALPH, '28, graduated from McGill in law with 2nd Class honours. MARCEL JALBERT, '28, FRANK O'REILLY, '28, graduated in law from University of Montreal, and EMILE LATULIPPE, graduated in law from McGill.

Congratulations are extended to DR. PAUL LAPJ:.ANTE on his recent appointment to the Administrative Staff of St. Luke's Hospital, Montreal.

As his contribution to this section of the "Alumnus", ALBERT FREGEAU writes that PERCY RoBERT and JoE FARMER "have taken unto themselves each one wife", also that PEDRO SuNIAGA is a practising attorney in Mexico City and intends to get married in the spring. Best o' luck, Pedro. From .. Sivan" he also learned that PAUL GoROZPE is a sugar magnate in Mexico and DONALD FLOOD is in the Real Estate business in Cleveland, Ohio.

We earnestly request that our out-of-town readers write to the editor and let him know that they have received their copy of the "ALUMNUS." Unless you write to him he has no way of telling whether the copy sent you reached the right party or found a quiet and unknown resting-place in the Dead Letter Office. Over and above this it helps to cement the bonds of unity which we are endeavouring to build up between the magazine and its readers, which, after all, is the only reason for the existence of the publication.

REGIOPOLIS COLLEGE Rev. Brendan J. Cloran, S.J.

SINCE September last, Regiopolis College in Kingston has been under thecare and direction of the Jesuit Fathers of Upper Canada. The College,.

founded under a charter of King William IV, in 1837, and raised to University rank by a charter of United Canada in 1866 has been conducted, almost since its inception, by Priests of the Diocese, but changing conditions,. due largely to the great need of priests for missions and parish work, made it necessary for His Excellency Archbishop O'Brien to seek other directors. and professor for Regiopolis. REv. LEo J. NELLIGAN, S.J., former Dean of Studies at Loyola College, was appointed first Jesuit Rector of the College.

The History 0f Regiopolis is a long and worthy one. His Lordship, the_ Honourable and Right Reverend ALEXANDER MACDONELL, first Bishop of Upper Canada, laid the corner stone of the first Regiopolis Building on June 11th, 1838. The Diocesan record and the biography of the distinguished founder of Regiopolis College show what difficulties he had to overcome in founding a Catholic College in the town of Kingston, which, at that time, had fewer than 100 Catholic families . It was while on a tour of England, Ireland and Scotland to raise funds for his great objectiveRegiopolis-that his unselfish labour began to tell on his constitution. He died on January 14th, 1840, in his native land.

BISHOP MACDONELL was succeeded in the Diocese of Upper Canada by his Coadjutor, MONSEIGNEUR Gou LIN who, fully aware of the need of facilities for higher education of Catholic youth, worked unceasingly for the cause of Regiopolis and it was his privilege to see the first building completed.

In 1850, lack of funds and the great need of priests to cope with therapidly expanding parochial work throughout the extensive diocese forced the diocesan head to close the college temporarily and the building was. vacant for some time. Before time came to reopen Regiopolis the rapid expansion of the Hotel Dieu Hospital, which had been established in 1845 forced the Sisters in charge to seek larger quarters and so they acquired the vacant college building which now forms the central portion of the spacious Hotel Dieu Hospital of Kingston .

With the coming of ARCHBISHOP CLEARY, who assumed charge of the Diocese in 1880, Regiopolis was again established in a beautiful stone building at the corner of King and William Streets. Archbishop CLEARYbent every energy to keep the college in the forefront. He contributed generously to its financial advancement and in turn ARCHBISHOP GAUTHIER supplemented the good work. The college grew rapidly, students were attracted from far and near and it soon outgrew its accommodations so much so that when His GRACE ARCHBISHOP SPRATT assumed charge of the See in 1911 he immediately saw the need of a larger Regiopolis. With this end in view he purchased the present site on Russell Street and in 1914 laid the· corner stone of the first building in the new location. To this first building· was added an imposing group of buildings, a Faculty Building, a handsome and commodious Dormitory Building and a modern and well equipped Gymnasium. The laying of the corner stone of the Dormitory buildingwhich took place on Sunday May 3rd, 1926, attracted province-wide· attention. The ceremony was performed by His ExcELLENCY MosT

REVEREND PIETRO D1 MARIA, TITULAR ARCHBiaHOP OF lcoNIUM and Apostolic Delegate to Canada and Newfoundland.

Archbishop Spratt's desire was to enlarge the scope of the College by making it a boarding as well as a day school and, in time, make full use of the University charter. His strenuous labours in this work and in other duties connected with the Archdiocese impaired his health to such an extent that in May 1929, His ExcELLENCY MosT REv. M. J. O'BRIEN was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop and assumed his new duties in October 1929. Shortly after, Archbishop O'Brien called together the members of the Corporation of Regiopolis and of the Diocesean Board of Consultors all of whom were of the mind that if the work destined for Regiopolis was to be carried to successful fruition a religious Community, which would have an ample supply of professors, should be invited to assume charge of the College. On the 12th of June 1931 an agreement was reached with the Jesuit Fathers of Upper Canada by which the Order took over the College.

Thus, after enjoying a period of prosperity and widening influence and also of stress, which, for a time necessitated its closing, Regiopolis emerged into an expanding institution during recent years, and bids fair to come into its own as one of the leading educational institutions in the Dominion

OUR NEWLY ORDAINED MEMBERS

This year we are pleased to record the ordination to the Holy Priesthood of five of our members. "The Alumnus" joins with their many friends in wishing that blessings in abundance may be showered down upon them and their work in the Vineyard of Christ.

RE~ GERARD DOYLE

The honour of being the first Loyola alumni to be ordained expressly for the China Missions goes to REV. GERA.LD DOYLE. Born in Toronto, Father Doyle came to Loyola in 1920 and left at the end of the year. In 1926 he entered St. Francis Xavier Seminary, Scarboro Bluffs, Ont., and five years later, was ordained at Peterboro, by His ExcELLENCY THE RIGHT REVEREND DENIS O'CONNOR, D.D. On Sunday, Sept. 13th, he celebrated his first Solemn High Mass in his parish church, Our Lady of Lourdes, Toronto. Assisting him on this occasion were his two brother priests, REv. BASIL DOYLE, C.S.P., and REv. BERNARD DOYLE, P.P., of Welland, Ont. Shortly after his ordination FATHER DoYLE left for Rome where he will do post-graduate work in Canon Law.

REv. EUGENE AUDET, S.J.

The ordination of REV. EuGE.NE AUDET, S.J., recalls the early years of the present Loyola, as he was a member of the first class to graduate after the complete removal of the college from the old building on Drummond Street. FATHER AuDET was born at Les Eboulements, Que., entered Loyola Preparatory in 1909 and having completed his full course, obtained B.A. in 1917. In 1920 he entered the Society of Jesus and of the intervening years, three (1925-1928) were spent as Regent of Sudbury College. FATHER AuD1n was ordained on Aug. 15th, 1931, by Hrs GRACE ARCHBISHOP GAUTHIER, in the Domestic Chapel of Immaculate Conception College, Rachel St.

REv. RAYMOND SUTTON, S.J.

Known to hundreds of Alumni, both as a student and as professor, FATHER SuTTON, who is a member of the class of '22, came to Loyola in 1915 and remained until April 1918 when he left to enter the Jesuit Novitiate at Guelph, Ont. Later FATHER SUTTON taught at Loyola and the Indian Missions, Spanish, Ont. He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood in the Domestic Chapel of the Immaculate Conception College, Rachel St., Montreal, by Hu GRACE ARCHBISHOP GA..UTHIER.

OBITUARY

Since the copy for the ALUMNUS was sent to the printer, death has brought sorrow into the lives of some more of our members. We offer our sincere sympathy to Mr. Hector Daly, S.J., Dublin, Ireland, and to George Daly, '26, on the death of their father; to Rev. Henry Bartley, C.SS.R., class of '16 and Lawrence Bartley, '27, whose father was accidentally killed in an automobile accident in Seattle; to Paul Demers, '30 on the sudden death of his father.

T. Burrows Kelly, Class of '18

Death removed another Alumni in the person· of FLIGHT LIEUT. T. BURROWS KELLY, . class of '18. Lieut. Kelly was born in Carillon, Que. and was a student at Loyola from 1909 to 1915. He later attended McGill University for somt time and left to join the Royal Air Force, where promotion soon brought him to the position of Instructor. Lieut. Kelly contracted pleurisy as a result of injuries suffered in an aeroplane crash about five years ago. He was removed to Weston Sanitarium, where he remained up to the time of his death. The funeral was held at St. Andrews East. To the bereaved family we extend our deepest sympathy.

Charles Art:hur MIii, B.A. '26

Many are the former students of Loyola who heard with deep regret of the death of CHARLIE MrLL, which took place at Quebec during the latter part of November. Born in Quebec he attended the Commercial Academy in that city and in 1918 came to Loyola. He will long be remembered for his ability in all branches of sport. In hockey, he was considered one of the best left wingers developed at Loyola in many years, in lacro~se and baseball he was equally effective and in tennis he rarely failed to reach the finals. As a student Charlie was also outstanding. To his bereaved parents and to his brother George '25, "THE ALUMNUS" wishes to extend its sympathy.

John D. Shee, B.L. '10

There are many whose college days go back two score years or so who will remember the athletic prowess of JOHN D. SHEE; there are many also who learned with sorrow of his death.

On October 23rd 1930, he disappeared from his home in Quebec and was never seen again alive. On September 5th 1931, a verdict of "found drowned" was returned. at a coroner's inquest on the finding of a body identified as that of John D. Shee.

To his sorrowing wife, and to his parents, Dr. and Mrs. P. A. Shee, we wish to extend our sincere sympathy.

HERE YOU GOLFERS!

In the "Loyola News" for October 27th, we find the following:-"It is interesting to note that among the Provincial Golf Handicaps, the last of which was recently published, Loyola Alumni figure rather prominently. Among these are Carroll Stewart with handicap of 4, Prud'homme StGermain, Leo Ryan and Art. Bradley with handicaps of 6. These four would form a rather smart team to represent the Alumni in open competition with many another like organization in the province."

J THE LOYOLA ALUMNI GOLF DAY Vincent E. Scully

THERE was inaugurated during the year just ended the Loyola Alumni Golf Day, held September 16th. For the locale of this event the

charming Knowlton links was chosen, situated in the heart of the Eastern Townships among!lt the green mountains and overlooking Brome Lake. It may be interesting here to note that the property comprising the .link_s was originally "Patented" in 1815 to Col. Asa Porter, a United Empire Loyalist, and deeded to Col. P. H. Knowlton in 1836, from whence the village takes its name.

The efforts of the committee handling arrangements were rewarded with one of those clear invigorating days that only occur in late summer. This good fortune was in no small measure responsible for the great success and enjoyment expressed by every competitor.

Due to the lateness of the season and the fact that a week day was chosen we were afforded the almost unique golfing experience of having the complete facilities of both clubhouse and links at our disposal. A nine hole practice round was played in the forenoon, while after lunch an eighteen hole competition took place. Various prizes were distributed at the clubhouse the same evening with our worthy president J. D. King, presiding. The principal winners being Mr. Errol Coughlin, who had a net 72, and Mr. P. St. Germain with a gross 85.

A check-up of those taking part in the Golf Day, brings to light the interesting fact that no less than 13 class-years were represented. These were Harold Kavanagh, class of '13; Lionel St. G. Wilkins, class of '14; Philip McKenna, J. D. King, class of '16; Harry Bussiere, J. Dooner, J. O'Neil Gallery, class of '17; Errol Coughlin, class of '18; Rupert Holland, V. E. Scully, class of '19; Bashford Brown, T. V. Shibley, class of '21; Kew Smith, class of '22; A. P. Vanier, class of '23; Gerald Decarie, class of '25; Herbert Loucks, Prud'homme St-Germain, class of '28; Gavin Power, Norman Saylor, A. Snow, class of '29; and Richards Keyes, class of '30.

In obliging the editor with this article, Mr. Scully's modesty has naturally prevented him from mentioning one very important fact, namely, the part which he and Mr. Errol Coughlin played in making the Golf Day a successful event. Those who took part fully realize the amount of time 'and labor expended, and with them "The Alumnus" joins in expressing its thanks and in hoping that the years to come will see the seed they have planted bearing fruit a thousandfold-._:._Eo.

THE DIRECTORY

In an endeavour to bring more of the former students into active membership, we decided to send out a list of those concerning whom we had absolutely no information, to a definite number of known alumni in each of several classes. Accompanying the list was a letter setting forth our desires. To say that we were pleased with the response accorded this irynovation is faint praise. The lists were returned almost one hundred per cent. Some, it is true, were not able to be of much assistance, others more fortunate in the knowledge of the whereabouts of their classmates, gave us considerable much-needed information. To one and all, "THE ALUMNUS" wishes to express its sincere thanks for their whole-hearted co-operation.
