The Chamber Spotlight

Trailside Café is Yorktown’s newest health conscienceeatery. We are located on Kear Street directly across fromShell gas station. The North County Trail runs just acrossthe street which makes it a great place for all the bikers, runners, rollerbladers or anyone venturing out for a nicewalk, to take a break and sip on a fresh juice or enjoy ahealthy snack.

Trailside Café gets you on the path to good health. Weoffer a variety of juices and smoothies from fresh fruitsand vegetables. Our drinks give you more servings of fruitsand vegetables along with extra vitamins and nutrientsthan anywhere else. And that’s a good thing because theAmerican Cancer Society recommends 8 servings per day.

Eating and drinking a balanced nutritional diet is so impor-tant for the health of our bodies. It is such a passion ofours to teach and share what we know so the public canbe educated and make health conscience decisions. Manyplaces we all eat at use processed foods that are filled withhormones and antibiotics. Weare trying to help everyonemake the change to food thatis fresh and will be beneficialto their lives. Starting TrailsideCafé has given us a greatopportunity to get the wordout. We look forward to help-ing and teaching many more!

Half way through the summer andthings are boiling hot at the YorktownChamber of Commerce. We have com-pleted our 2013 scholarship fundprogram and four students have receivedawards. It’s very pleasing and comfortingto see these young people receive mone-tary help for their educations. We wishall of them success in their endeavorsand hope they will remember how proudtheir parents were watching them movetheir lives ahead. Of course, on behalf ofthe entire Chamber and the students andparents, we would like to thank themembers who contributed to this cause. This remains an outstanding memberbenefit.

Sales are gearing up for the 2013 FallFestival and Street Fair. This year we willbe adding a special section we are calling“KIDZKORNER” for our smaller patrons.Headed and sponsored by Macaroni Kid,this area will be dedicated to small chil-dren and all festivities will be for them.Together with Funtime, the DeVito Fieldwill be one giant playground.Sponsorships are going fast so displayyour business at the event by reserving asponsorship soon.

Our newest event will be September21, 2013. That is the night the YorktownChamber of Commerce presents “TheYorktown Alumni Musicians Group” atthe Yorktown Stage at 8PM. Come andsee Yorktown’s Finest Alumni from yearspast perform their many talents. Ticketsare a very reasonable $20 p/p and thiswill be one great party. If you grew up inthe 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, you can’t affordnot to be present. Let us take you backfor one night to your high school years.

We are preparing to host the 2013political debates at the Yorktown Stage. On October 21, 2013 will be the local

debates, October23, 2013 will be thecounty debates, both at 7pm andon October 25,2013 at 1PM willbe a repeat of thelocal debatesdesigned to accom-modate our seniorpopulation. I urge you to participate inthese events as this is a very importantelection for Yorktown. The nextSupervisor will be responsible for, amongother issues, continuing to move thistown forward in a positive way. The busi-ness community is enjoying positivegrowth these days and continuing tomove this town forward is a top priorityfor our membership.

Recently, as printed in last monthsedition of this newsletter, the chamberresponded to the May 7th, 2013 townboard vote on a refusal to advertise apublic hearing. At the town board meet-ing of July 23, 2013, that letter was readto the town board. Let me make some-thing perfectly clear, the result of thedenied public hearing was not the issue. The issue was a member of this organiza-tion, or any other resident for thatmatter, was denied due process underthe law. In addition to that, the publicand membership were censored frommaking any comment, good or bad onthe application. The Chamber has askedthe town board to reconsider their posi-tion on this issue and allow for the publichearing to commence. As of the writingof this article, the Chamber and the pub-lic are being ignored, something we willremember in November.

God bless America!

YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Wherever one chooses to live, the DNA for sustaining quality of life can belabeled “HHH--Humans Helping Humans.” That’s atthe heart of why we created YorktownOrganizations United (YOUnited).

YOUnited, a vital community resource launched bytown Supervisor Michael Grace when he took officeJanuary 2012, is gaining traction with a missionstatement and board of directors.

The mission statement was curated by a YOUnitedcommittee chaired by Support ConnectionExecutive Director Kathy Quinn and ratified by theboard. It reads as follows: “A CommunityFoundation that Seeks to Strengthen its Membersand Affiliates by Sharing Resources and Uniting theCommunity for the Common Good.”

Topping YOUnited’s agenda is drafting of by-laws;a database listing community organizations andvolunteers for better communication and sharingservices; a community calendar of events; training;administrative support; and other support resourcesfor not-for-profits.

The organization also seeks to bring civic, charityand social groups closer together with the localbusiness community for mutual benefit. Without astrong local economy, all communities and theirconstituents suffer.

In the works for fall 2013 is a unique, first-timefundraiser hosted by YOUnited, with the workingtitle of “Yorktown Follies.” It is modeled after therenowned “Al Smith Dinner” held each fall inManhattan’s Waldorf-Astoria. In a good-naturedformat, politicians playfully poke fun at themselvesand at each other, especially opposing candidates, all for the sake of charity.

YOUnited has pledged any funds that might bereceived through its various activities will be usedto provide resources to the community’s not-for-profit groups that voluntarily participate in its

activities. It seeks to encourage funds from sourcesthat do not currently donate to local groups.Ongoing fundraising by YOUnited member groupswill not be adversely affected, only reinforced andsupplemented. YOUnited is not an agency or oper-ating unit of the Town of Yorktown, whichprovides no funding for the organization.

Still in formation, charter members (including offi-cers) of YOUnited’s Board of Directors are (in alphaorder): Bruce Apar (President), Mary Capoccia(Secretary), Tricy Cushner, Rich DeSilva (Treasurer),Al French, Monica Garrigan , Michael Grace(Executive Member-at-Large), Tony Grasso, RabbiYehuda Heber, Loretta Lagonia (Vice President),Honorable Sal Lagonia (Legal Counsel), Mike Sitzer,Cindy Smith, Joe Visconti (Chairman), Rev. ClaireWoodley.

Under the guidance of Yorktown Chamber ofCommerce President Joe Visconti, a close alliancehas been formed between YOUnited and the busi-ness organization. The Chamber hosts YOUnitedmeetings the first Tuesday of each month anddevotes this page in each issue of its monthlynewsletter to YOUnited.

YOUnited can be followed on Facebook atYorktown Organizations United and on Twitter@YOUnitedStates, A website is in developmentwith domain names registered underYorktownUnited.com and YorktownUnited.org.

Yorktown organizations, volunteers and residentswho want to be on YOUnited’s mailing list can sub-mit their contact information [email protected].

The first step in being a great member of the Chamber ofCommerce or any organization for that matter is to knowwhat you expect from them. If you are like me, you don’treally have a definitive expectation. Sure, we want morebusiness to walk through our doors and we want thecommunity to have a strong economy but seldom have wetaken the time to be specific in what we expect for ourannual membership payment.

To help find our expectations, we need to look within themission of any Chamber of Commerce and it usually willsay the mission is “to serve, protect and promote ourmembers.” It is much easier to find our expectations byunderstanding the Chamber is an information center, anissue center and a marketing center for its members.

If you want to be a great member, start by taking a fewmoments and list what information and data is importantto your annual budgeting and planning process. Weshould expect updated demographics and trends from ourChamber of Commerce as a working tool for ourbusinesses. If we actually start using the informationprovided by the Chamber of Commerce, the odds are thatwe will tell others and they too will utilize theinformation. Implementing what an organization offers isbeing a great member.

Next, identify the issues and regulations that are the keyroadblocks to your business. Are they local or state issues? Are there regulations you hate but don’t know how tofight them? If you can identify them and let the Chamberof Commerce know , it’s the first step for the organizationto start prioritizing the issues they face. The public affairscommittee is only guessing what’s important to us until wetake a moment to call or email our input. Listing yourissues is being a great member.

The third step in being a great member is the first lessontaught to newly elected board members; show up. 80% of

a board member’s job is simply showing up. If we trulyexpect to increase business and acquire new customersthrough our membership, we (or a representative) have toshow up at the various events and programs to make thathappen. Showing up is being a great member. If theprograms and events offered don’t interest you, take amoment and call the Chamber of Commerce executivedirectly and let her know. That’s being an even greatermember. The truth helps as much as it may hurt.

Telling the truth here isn’t complaining, it’s allowing theorganization to stop assuming. Great members take thetime to call and recommend what would be more usefulto them. We don’t want the Chamber of Commerceassuming what we want but they HAVE to assume whatwe want until we tell them.

Be a great member by knowing what you expect andbeing sure the Chamber of Commerce knows as well. Itdoesn’t work if you keep it a secret. Imagine what wouldhappen at the next planning session if you and every othermember took the time to share their true expectations ofthe Chamber of Commerce.

How to Be a Great Member

“The DR Is In”I learned the hard way that I cannot always count on othersto respect my feelings, even if I respect theirs. Being a goodperson doesn’t guarantee that others will be good people

too. You only have control over yourself and how youchoose to be as a person. As for others, you can only choose

to accept them or walk away.
