David Meyer loves to eat. And he loves tocompete. So he’s found a way to do both allwhile helping to promote his company, HowcoMetals Management.

By day, David is vice president of westernhemisphere operations for the Houston-basedmetal management company.

But on certain weekends, and a few times ayear, he turns into leader of a cooking teamcalled Leave of Absence Cooking Team and en-ters the world of competitive barbecuing.

His weapon is a black metal pit, in whichhis team prepares ribs, brisket, chicken and fa-

jitas in a two day affair that leaves competitorsexhausted but satisfied.

He said he enjoys meeting the employeesand their families at the Yorktown WesternDays-Ziegfest celebration.

In the 2011 competition they won four tro-phies: second place chicken, fifth and seventhplace ribs and fifth place chili.

But Howco’s LOA cookers are not ready toquit their day jobs.

“This is just a way to have fun and promotethe company,” Meyer said.

coral reefs, surfing in CostaRica, or playing musicthrough the Italian country-side, he tries to get the mostout of what the world has tooffer.

His passion for life invigor-ates everyone around him in-cluding his fan base.

Those who get hooked onhis charisma and high energycome back show after show, year after year, and recordafter record.

Creager’s newest recordmay be his best work yet.“Surrender”, released Jan2012, was produced by LloydMaines and marks a “back-to-basics” approach for Roger.

As always, Roger createsan interesting collection withsongs that are very differentfrom each other and will keepthe listener’s attention start tofinish.

Roger is very fortunate thathis music career allows himthis lifestyle.

But he gives it back by put-ting his life experiences andhis infectious high energy andzeal for adventure right backinto his songwriting and per-formances.

Creager may travel theworld, but he never strays farfrom his small-town SouthTexas roots and his music en-compasses all of him.

Western Days - Ziegfest!!“Have a Great Weekend”

Officially started in 1958, Western Dayshas its roots dating from the early tomid 1950’s with Leslie and Cecil

Mueller’s M&M Rodeo Company organizingcowboy parades to promote the rodeo per-formances on Smith Creek, just south of York-town. A showman and promoter, Leslie Mueller

gathered the rodeo cowboys to ride horsebackthrough downtown Yorktown. These proces-sions were said to have been quite a wild sight.Since there were not enough broke saddlehorses to go around, many of the cowboys pa-raded down Main on broncs right out of thebucking horse string.

In the Spring of 1958 Mueller, in cooperationwith the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce, planned a Western parade to involve the entirecommunity, as well as out-of-town organiza-tions. A two-day rodeo was planned as well.Mueller pledged a pair of handmade boots to

the parade’s best-dressed cowgirl, while theChamber promised boots to the best-dressedcowboy. Other prizes were pledged from com-munity businesses such as Daniel Dry Gods,Simecek's Firestone, J. E. Wolf Sr. and Cole Drygoods. The April 2, 1958 edition of The Yorktown

News reported that the parade was “conceived

on the spur of the moment, with no timemake elaborateplans, appoint committees orwork out details….” Thenewspaper further reportedthat the success of the venturewas due “…to the sponta-neous and whole-hearted co-operation of local businessmen…”In spite of this last-minute

planning, on Saturday, March29 at 3 p.m.Yorktown wel-comed a crowd that jammedthe downtown sidewalks tosee the parade led by theVFWColor Guard. The “BroncBusters” (aka TheYorktownHigh School marching band)led byMary Gail Kerlick, fol-lowed close behind. The parade featured the fa-

mous Lone Star Brewing Com-pany Shetland Pony Hitch. This team of matched Shet-lands was outfitted with tengallon hats and six shootersand pulled aminiature cov-ered wagon.A parade highlight was

MonroeWoods’ mustang teampulling a frontier wagon carry-ing an ancient two-seaterChick Sale (outhouse), com-plete with corn cobs and aSears catalog. The parade also included

colorfully-garbedmountedgroups, several floats, newtractors, trucks and automo-biles, as well as the four-pieceDisintegrated Brotherhood ofNear Musicians. With a broom and shovel,

Sparky, the rodeo clown, brought up the rear and pro-claimed that Yorktown was nota one-horse town indeed!TheYorktown News also re-

ported that most of the west-ern parade watchers“…hightailed it out to LesMueller's Smith Creek

Arena…to take in the rodeo.”“We saw cars bumper to

bumper all the way over thehill and as they wended theirway into the groundsmoreandmore kept coming.”“The show got underway

about nine o’clock, and athriller it was…withmean, ornery broncs and bulls, andfast elusive calves, there wereplenty of spills, thrills andchills…as good a show aswe’ve seen anywhere.”After the success of the first

parade and rodeo, theYork-town Chamber of Commercecontinued the celebration an-nually. In 1962 the Chambersponsored the firstWesternDays royal court with Jo AnnBoone crowned as queen. For nearly two decades,

M&MRodeo Company pro-duced a rodeo in conjunctionwith theWestern Days cele-bration.In 1962Mueller constructed

a new arena on his ranchnorth of Yorktown on Highway

240 in the small communityonce known as Little St. Louisand the rodeos were movedfrom the Smith Creek arena. In July 1963Mueller died

after a horseback riding acci-dent during a rodeo in Cuero. However, theWestern Daysrodeos continued withMueller’s widow, Cecil OliviaGilliamMueller and son Don,managingM&MRodeo Com-pany. The last rodeo they pro-duced inYorktown was in1975.Today,Western Days contin-

ues to draw parade partici-pants from surroundingcounties, as well as visitorsfrom across the country. Thethousands who come toYork-town each year enjoy not onlythe Grand Parade, but livemusic and entertainment, chili cook-offs, various con-tests, shopping and the gen-uine fellowship of thetownspeople – the spirit out ofwhich the celebration wasborn 54 years ago.

Looking back in time, theYorktownWestern Days-Ziegfest found its roots

over 90 years ago.According to newspaper

publisher John Janacek’s “TheBest of theView,” YorktownHarvest Feasts were cele-brated prior to the 1920s.In 1922, it becameYork-

town’s LittleWorld’s Fair. Atthat time, the Yorktown FairAssociation, organized in1920, decided the LittleWorld’s Fair would be a goodway to promote Yorktown’sbusinesses, industries, prod-ucts, public facilities, and sur-rounds.According to the “DeWitt

County History” book, “Cara-vans of interested citizens ad-vertised the fairs inneighboring and far-awaycities. Once the high schoolband got to broadcast fromSan Antonio’s radio stationWOAI for publicity.”The main events of the fairs

included a parade, rodeo, dances, a carnival, and ex-hibits in long exhibit halls oflivestock, agricultural prod-ucts, arts and crafts, pantrygoods and some commercialproducts.

The last fair was held in1948.Ten years later in 1958, the

annualWestern Days celebra-tions were started. These in-cluded choosing a queen andher court, a parade, a carnival, street dancing, music, food, arts and crafts, booths, auc-tions, and contests. They wereconnected to Leslie and Cecil

Mueller’s M&M Rodeo Com-pany’s rodeo on Smith Creek, just south of Yorktown.A major endorsement of the

festival was announced in2009 when ZiegenBock tied it-self to Ziegfest.FromHarvest Feasts to

Western Days-Ziegfest, York-town has welcomed its visi-tors for over 90 years.
