Parliamentary Corner Prepared by Titessa D. Smith, State Parliamentarian

Adapted from www.roberts-rules.com Survival Tips on Robert’s Rules of Order

In light of several inquiries, I felt that it would be beneficial to provide some tips to the body regarding the vot-ing process.

Majority Vote:

Does Robert mean ... the Majority of the entire membership? ... the Majority of the members present? ... the Majority of the Votes Cast?

Generally, the basic requirement for adoption of a motion by any assembly with a quorum is a Majority Vote, except for certain motions as listed below. A Majority is 'more than half' of the votes cast by persons legally entitled to vote, excluding blank votes and abstentions. Majority does not mean 51%. In a situation with 1000 votes, Majority = 501 votes; but 51% = 510 votes.

Let's see an example:

The chair called for a vote on motion to adopt the agenda.

Of the members present, 100 were entitled to vote, but 15 did not cast a ballot. 85 votes were cast.

To obtain a majority vote for “yes”, 43 votes are required.

2/3 Vote:

Robert specifies which motion will require at least a 2/3 vote for adoption. Notice that it is not called a 2/3 ma-jority. A 2/3 vote is generally not taken as a voice vote, but rather as a standing count, or some other easily countable fashion. Generally speaking, a 2/3 vote is required for adoption of any motion which:

1. Suspends or modifies a rule of order already adopted;

2. Prevents the introduction of a question to consideration;

3. Closes, limits, or extends the limits of debate;

4. Closes nominations or the polls;

5. Takes away membership or office.

In these circumstances, 2/3 of the votes cast is required. For example if 100 members were are entitled to vote and 85 cast a vote on a motion to end debate, 57 votes are required to carry the motion.

vember 8, 2015. The girls took a tour of the campus and were able to visit dorm rooms to get a feel for what it is like to live in a dorm.

They were able to speak to students about the academic programs, the social life and safety of the campus. Although this was just a day tour the girls were able to gain insight into college life.

The girls are looking forward to visiting Morgan State University in April.

AAXZ WALKED FOR SOROR TRACY DURHAM This October, Soror Tracy Davidson-Durham was honored and humbled to be a part of the observation of Breast Cancer Awareness Month with her fellow charter members, the amazing ladies of Alpha Alpha Chi Zeta Chapter. "The great 18", as they have affectionately named themselves, walked on October 18th in Point Pleasant Beach, “to support the fighters, admire the survivors, honor the taken” and to help the American Cancer Society make strides against this life changing illness. The walk was the culmination of the chapter's campaign to raise funds through their Z-Hope initiative. This walk has a new meaning for AAXZ and for that reason we walked Soror Durham. She was emotionally uplifted by be-ing a part of such an awesome event.

Tracy has been a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. since Spring 2007. She is a wife, mother of

four and a SURVIVOR! In January of 2011, her life was forever changed when she was diagnosed with Stage 3B breast cancer. With the Lord as her light and salvation her faith kept her strong to trust and believe in His promises for her healing. She is here today to tell about the 8 rounds of chemo, 3 surgeries, 11 weeks of radiation, and 6 weeks of lymph edema therapy because God carried her through. She had a great team of doctors who provided the most up to date and innovative care possible. However, the healing process was made easier with God’s help and the love, support, and prayers of her family. Tracy is forever grateful and will always give God the glory for fulfilling his promise to never leave or forsake her. It is extremely important for Tracy to tell her story in order to inspire others to have hope for the future. She ceases every opportunity to inform women of the importance of monthly self-exams as well as yearly physi-cals and mammograms. She is reminded of hearing someone say, “When it comes to breast cancer there are two kinds of women; the ones with it and the ones who are afraid of getting it.” With that said, she also feels it is very important to encourage all women to develop a strong spiritual identity and to keep a positive atti-tude. Tracy is a believer that two things have a profound effect on the outcome. Her prayer is that the pres-ence of the Most High is felt with every step of their journey and that those in this struggle will have no fear…because God is with them.

An International Three-way Partnership to Lift Women’s Spirit

Without access to feminine hygiene supplies, women in developing countries cannot leave their homes. In many of these cultures, women are shunned during this sensitive time each month and most girls are forced to miss 20% of the school year. Fortunately there is a simple solution: washa-ble feminine pads. The Zetas, Amicae, Archonettes, Amicettes and youth parents of Omicron Omi-cron Zeta Chapter partnered with two organizations to provide washable sanitary napkins to women in third world countries.

This was a three way partnerships. The members collected towels and cut them to form the inside batting. The member cut out 2340 inside pieces. The Peaceful Stitchers Quilting Guild of Gloucester County will sew together three pieces with an outside flannel layer. Once the pads are finished they will be sent to Global Aid Network (GAIN) a Christian humanitarian organization that will provide a kit that contains 2 bars of soap, 3 pairs of underwear, 5 safety pins and 10 cloth sanitary pads. The event chairs, Soror Stephanie Hawkins and Amica Mary Chisholm were delighted at the turnout of workers for this three hour event. Soror Hawkins who is a member of the Peaceful Stitchers carried the bags of towel pieces to their next destination. When they are sewn together and the kits are delivered, Omi-cron Omicron Zeta Chapter will have contributed 780 washable sanitary napkins, helping women reclaim control of their lives and take charge of their health.

In Burlington County, third grade students at Twin Hills Elementary School in Willing-boro benefit from a $4,780 grant that their teachers were awarded by NJEA Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education.

First, teacher, Soror Janene K. Onyango and 6 other teachers, with a Professional Devel-opment Specialist received initial training by a Project Wild Facilitator from the N.J. Di-vision of Fish and Wildlife. Professional development is on-going, and required to re-ceive curriculum guides and materials, as well as educational support services in the Pro-ject Wild curriculum. A PLC (Professional Learning Community) centers on cross-curricular teaching, specifically reading and writing in the content area of Science.

Students enjoy field trips to natural animal habitats and environments. They journal their experiences in a “field notebook,” gather data, take pictures, and create videos. Dance, art, photography, videography, and music showcase the students’ experiences. Students also record their feelings, reactions and experiences in a reflective journal.

The goal is to create an after-school Environmental Science Club that elicits community financial support and involvement.

Zeta Delta Zeta Chapter continues its partnership with Bayada Homecare in assisting and providing requested items for a family in need. Sorors Tousha Bailey-Herout and Angelica Russell presented several items to Clinical Care Manager Charlena Barnes, RN.
