Trivia Question for September

About what hypoc-risy did Paul con-front Peter (and Barnabas)?

Answer:

In Galatians 2:11-14 Paul chastised them for their hy-pocrisy as they would eat with the Gentiles when other Jews were not around, but would not be with them when their fellow men were there. Sound fa-miliar.

Trivial Question for October

The Gentiles of Ephesus were for-merly without God or hope. What TWO reasons were given for this?

Free To Be Sent

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

Isaiah 6:5

One of the great lessons of Scripture is in Isaiah 6, where Isaiah comes into the presence of God and is immediately overcome by his own sinfulness. Always when we are brought in to the pres-ence of God, we are made conscious of our sin. Our sin must be known if we are to know God. When we recognize our sin, God is free to cleanse our hearts. True fellowship with Him is possi-ble after this cleansing.

When Isaiah made his confession, a seraph took a live coal from the altar and placed it on Isaiah's lips to purge them. The word seraphim in Hebrew means “the burning ones.” A burning coal held by a burning one was touched to Isaiah's lips. Fire is the necessary purifying agent in Scripture and in life. It speaks of God’s holiness and of His cleansing power.

It is after that cleansing that Isaiah heard a voice saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” (Isaiah 6:8). The timing here is significant. Isaiah was not ready to hear a call from God be-fore his cleansing took place. The moment he was cleansed, he heard God’s voice speaking. Because Isaiah was clean, he could hear, and he could respond, “Here am I! Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8)

If we have trouble hearing God’s voice, His direction, and His call, it may be because our lives have not yet been touched by His fire.

Evaluating Your Commitment

Giving is a confession of our faith. At some point, true believers must

ascertain their commitment to giving. A life of giving emanates from a

life committed to the stewardship of all God has entrusted to our care. A

life committed to stewardship, that is, to properly using and managing

God’s provisions, springs from a life engaged in a covenantal relationship

with God.

Where do you stand on the “Life of Giving” ladder? Are you at the top

and fully committed to giving your all in the service of the Lord, secure in

the knowledge that your gifts will be returned in good measure, pressed

down, shaken together and running over (Luke 6:38)? Are you still

climbing, striving to get to the place in your spiritual life where faith ena-

bles you to trust in the Lord to supply your needs and not think twice

about giving generously of your limited funds? Are you at the bottom

rung, still contemplating the climb, but not quite sure you can make it to

the top and receive the prize? Have you opted to hold on to what you’ve

got, rather than stretch out on the kind of faith that offers the blessed as-

surance that God will do what He said and return whatever you give

many times over?

What’s the condition of your covenant with God? Is it as shiny as a brand

new penny or a bit dog-eared? A strong covenant relationship with the

Lord just doesn’t happen. Like anything of value, it requires lots of time,

attention, and tender-loving care to maintain. Such conservation is es-

sential because it forms the foundation for our life in giving. Remember,

tithing is just the beginning of giving. The Bible warns us against rob-

bing God in tithes and offerings (Malachi 3:8-12, KJV)

I am sure you have noticed the attractive pictures of the children in the foyer. Every month the pictures will rotate between Churches. The children featured are ready for adoption. Profiles of each child is found on the reverse side of the smaller pic-ture, located on the table. There continues to be a critical need for foster and adoptive parents. Consider becoming a mentor, foster or a forever home for an African American child.

Anger and Love

Anger seeks revenge

Love seeks healing

Anger spouts lies

Love speaks truth

Anger shouts loud

Love whispers softly

Anger rips at the soul

Love saves the soul

Anger causes others pain

Love causes others joy

Anger stoops low to solve problems

Love looks for higher ground

Anger lays down the law

Love breaks down strongholds

Anger is senseless in its methods

Love strives to make sense of a senseless world

Anger echoes carelessness

Love reflects from a caring heart

Anger solves problems only in the mind

Love works wonders in heart, body, and soul

Anger ruins the world

Love saves the day

Anger darkens the spirit

Love brightens the world

Birthday Prayer

Thank you, God, for giving me another year of life.

Thank you for all the people who remem-bered me today by sending cards, and letters, gifts and good wishes.

Thank you for all the experience of this past year; for times of success which will always be happy memories, for times of failure which re-minded me of my own weakness and of my need for you, for times of joy when the sun was shining, for times of sadness which drove me to you. Forgive me for the hours I wasted, for the chances I failed to take, for the opportu-nities I missed this past year.

Help me in the days ahead to make this the best year yet, and through it to bring good credit to myself, happiness and pride to my loved ones, and joy to you. Amen.

Inspiration comes in everything we see, touch and feel. For Pastor Williams in September, it came

using binoculars. It was explained that with these you can see

things far away and up close. God sees us from far away, every-

thing that we do.

Our lesson, watch what you do, stressed to the children to always

act as God wants you to act—He is watching you.

Lessons continued in Children’s Church with Brother Elijah Gilbert,

Jr. giving the following lessons:

Feathers in the Wind—using 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33. This lessons shows how our bad be-

havior affects those we love. When someone loves you, it hurts very much when you do

something you should not have done. Saying you are sorry does not stop the hurt. The things

you say and do are like a bag of feathers—and every time you open your mouth or do some-

thing—you open the bag and let the feathers into the wind.

Who-Who-Whooo— do you know any smart or wise people. The owl is associ-

ated with being wise in our culture. The Bible tells that true wisdom comes from

doing good things with God. You also can have true wisdom when you pray to

God for wise decisions. The moral of this story—the wisest person everyone

knows is GOD!

Please note: If you would like to volunteer to help with Children’s Church please

Family and Friends Day

We, the Board of Trustees and the Greater Mt. Zion Church Family celebrat-

ed our Family and Friends Day on Sunday, September 18th at 7:30 and 11:00

AM and you played a major role in our success. We had families and friends

from all walks of life, and in our coming together as family; we were United

as One in Love, Truth and Faithfulness. We had two powerful speakers, Rev.

Wayne G. Thompson, First Institutional Baptist Church, and our own anoint-

ed Man of God, Rev. Clarence A. Williams. They fed us spiritual food from

the Word of God which invigorated, stirred and revived our souls.

We thank all our participants for your prayers and support in helping to

make this day successful. We were truly blessed by your presence. We give

special thanks to our Emeritus members, Brothers Herbert Currington, M.

C. Jordan, Amos Keys and Sister Elizabeth Smith for your continued support

and prayers.

Congratulations to the members of the month of September and their dy-

namic Captains, Sister Frances Scott and Sister Donna Butler for being the

winners who made the largest sacrificial gift by our deadline of September

11th. However, the overall winners were the members of the month of Oc-

tober with Sister Lula Love as the Captain. We thank all of you who made a

donation of $100.00 or more or gave your best gift. We were blessed to

have received $13,005.00. We thank those of you who blessed us with your

favorite dish that helped to feed our many friends and families.

May God continue to bless and keep all of you in His care.

This is Annual Conference month

so we all wait anxiously for Friday,

October 14th to hear the name of

Pastor Clarence A. Williams re-

turning to Greater Mt. Zion.

With a new Conference Year

comes a new format for our News-

letter. Thanks for your support

and comments.

See you next Conference Year!
