Mid-1950’s style

Small town and working class so maybe a few articles of clothing worn is a year or two outdated.

All characters are working class

Outside setting is very cold, inside setting is pretty cozy

Play takes place in a restaurant

Hairstyle plain but professional for work

Clothing is work related, pale blue or very calm boring color for work uniform with a white apron and skin- toned panty hose

Make-up modest maybe even none

No bright clothing, hair a dull brown color

Waitress

Apron would be white and accented lining would not be on clothing. Sharp edges would be smoothed out and more efficient looking than fashionable.

Although bangs could be fashioned in a stylish way, I would avoid because of how plain Elma’s character is and this picture portrays a simple, plain look.

Hair is up and efficient, probably no bangs in face, scarf/ascot can be tied around neck, but preferably on the head to keep stray hairs out of face.

mind, but poor in wealth so clothing is bright but not elaborate

Hair color is bright blonde or red and bit long for the style but curly and big

Make-up is heavy and bright. Bright red blush and lipstick, bright blue eye shadow

Clothing while bright and colorful is skimpy and lacking cloth

If she has jewelry it is big, fake, and gaudy. Probably a necklace

Shoes are sensible but more bright than Elma or Grace’s, this is due to her original escape plan

Chanteuse

Bright lips are portrayed, blush would be brighter red, and hair big and curly.

Clothing red and skimpy. Probably a faux fur wrap in a darker color. Instead of a long flowing dress, use one that is tight and accentuates curves.

Acts as a guide for Bo for love. Probably use some sort of symbol to show importance of guidance

Big tough man, bearded and muscular. Unruly hair

Plaid long sleeve button up, jacket with the religious symbol, brown pants and boots, both comfortable for long trip

Not overly fussy with the style of cowboy but more functional cowboy

Cowboy hat worn throughout play

Ranch Hand

Hat and pants are accurate. Use plaid instead of butterfly for the manly effect. Add beard and darker hair.

Make this into a simple outline patch to go on the back of jacket or vest. Should be big enough for audience to see. Represents guiding and taming of wild things.

Has a patch on jacket to link him in some way to Virgil

Plaid shirt, blue jeans, and cowboy boots.

Cowboy hat can be used for entrance and exit but is off the rest of the time to unruly, long, dark hair

More stylish than Virgil

Young rancher and cowboy

Fringe on jacket or vest is good for movement, and shows quick, excited or slow, purposeful movement of Bo.

Wild horse patch to go on back of jacket or vest to coordinate with Virgil’s guidance and taming patch. Make this one simpler, with less color.

Costume Design Characters all have big jackets, scarves and gloves because of the cold winter storm

All winter wear will either be in the closet (Elma and Grace’s) or hung on pegs by the door for the easy convenience (Will, Carl, Virgil) others will place winter wear on the back of their chairs (Bo, Cherie) and some will keep them on throughout (Dr. Lyman)

Grey hair is to be used most definitely on Dr. Lyman, along with a few lines on the forehead

Sheriff Will, Grace, Carl, and maybe Virgil will also have some grey hairs but not a lot

Nail polish can be used on Cherie, preferably red

Since everyone is pretty consistent with costumes, except to put on a jacket or scarf when walking outside, costumes will be comfortable and functional but not necessarily easy to switch in and out of, EXCEPT for Cherie who will have a zipper in the back to make switching easy

For Bo and Virgil, every time jacket or vest is put on, back should be to the audience in order to view the patches. Close proximity to each other is also preferable when they are putting on jackets
