Theatre in the Mill exists to support artists to develop new work and to put our audiences right at the heart of that development.

We aspire not to do work for people, but with them, to explore the stories of our community and the place in which we live, to start conversations about art and the world.

we do this in three ways:

open

space

work

Open Space: a place for artists to play, explore and develop new ideas. a place to dream and think and a place to test with an audience.

TheaTre in The Mill cOMMiSSiOn: development commissions for artists whose work we love to create performances that can be toured.

ViSiTing WOrk: we host companies whose work adds to the conversation about what theatre is and what it can be.

you are watching a woman through the fourth wall of her home. The feed from the camera hidden in the lamp next to her is projected across her kitchen cabinets. When she speaks, her voice is caught by the microphone in her smartphone and amplified to you. She opens her laptop and an image of her face flickers across the room. you watch her type: 'I think I'm being watched...'

deNada dance Theatre presents a gender-bending evening of seductive and provocative dance choreographed by Carlos Pons Guerra. Three short narrative works form this kitschy and filmic bill of contemporary dance with a very Spanish flavour - a true feast of meaty dance soaked in a salsa of passion.

From a dingy cabaret in Civil War Barcelona, where a drag artiste murders her fascist lover backstage, passing through a lustful duel of seduction between two machos, and ending with a divine apparition in a kitchen of 1950's Seville, ham and passion is an exhilarating, hilarious journey through the history and culture of modern Spain that promises to subvert the senses.

They live next door (working title) is a physical theatre duet for two older male dancers accompanied by live music. The work explores perceptions around maleness and masculinity and questions socially preconceived roles and relationships to reveal our common humanity underneath the labels. Ieva aims to open a dialogue with the audience about masculinity and femininity, and the shifting boundaries of gender roles in modern society.

Ieva (pronounced: yeah-va) Kuniskis is a Lithuanian choreographer based in London. She combines dance and theatre to create unique movement language and develop authentic characters to share stories about everyday life. She refrains from telling a clear linear story, creating instead emotive narratives, that audiences can empathise with.Supported by: Swindon dance, Pavilion dance, Theatre In The Mill and arts Council England.

She was a black slave, who was subjected to medical experimentation in the 1840s.Then there’s J Marion Sims. He did the experimenting. He didn’t like using anaesthetic. Finally, there’s Pauline herself. Twenty-seven years ago, she was one of the first black British dancers to go to the rambert School.all three seem distant and different. But what if they’re not? What will they have to say to each other?Irreverent, funny and provocative, Pauline’s energising performance brings together theatre, movement and music to ask some big questions about the ways in which we’re different (or exactly the same). What if i Told you is supported by the West yorkshire Playhouse's Furnace artist development Programme

The year is 2044 and Earth is a lifeless wasteland. The only chance of survival is to be accepted into Eden, a city enclosed in a protective dome where the inhabitants are free from the dangers of the Outside but the promise of paradise may not be all that it seems.

eden follows two individuals, their emotional journey of social exclusion, and their struggle to survive in a world where there is little room for forgiveness. dynamic movement is fused with poetic text and woven throughout is a powerfully composed soundtrack.

Using satirical commentary and physical interpretation, displace yourself Theatre present parallels of the challenges surrounding homelessness and explore the social divides that exclude many communities.

Everyone wants their dad to be a hero. But what happens when your heroes let you down? Cheryl and Tess couldn’t remember the last proper conversation they had with their socialist dads. So they interviewed them. and filmed it.In Tribute acts, they use the footage to remember the good times; when they used to think that their dads were like Tony Blair, Bill Clinton and Pierce Brosnan. Now living as adults in the New Labour aftermath, Cheryl and Tess attempt to resurrect the lost father figures from their childhoods.Tribute acts is a hilarious and boldly honest exploration of father daughter relationships and whether our remembered pasts are in fact, a fiction.‘Raw theatrical brilliance... Gallacher and Seddon are gifted performers and the video interaction is beautifully stage-managed. It’s a brave, bold and fiercely realised work’

wolf kid theatre company’s first show sets out to explore difference, commonality, magic and revolution. a group of artists from different backgrounds explore how we are both divided and brought together by race, gender, class, ability, age and sexuality amongst other things that may and may not define us.

Part rehearsed and part improvised, things that could happen include: dancing, incanting, story-telling, music, silence, breathing, leaping, laughing, making offerings, asking questions, telling truths, calling on gods, creating a theatrical hex on the Tory Government.

What does it mean to be different from one another? What do we have in common? What sort of magic might we each be capable of? a work in progress sharing of an anarchic, visual and sensitive show that will try to do something genuinely exciting, beautiful and political.

love, bombs and apples is the comic and poignant new play from award winning playwright Hassan addulrazzak (Baghdad Wedding, The Prophet) - a tale of four men, each from different parts of the globe, all experiencing a moment of revelation.a Palestinian actor learns there is more to English girls than pure sex appeal. a Pakistani-born terror suspect figures out what is wrong with his first novel. a British youth suspects all is not what it seems with his object of desire. a New yorker asks his girlfriend for a sexual favour at the worst possible time.

This one man play is extremely funny with a sharp cutting edge for today's multi-cultural Britain.

behind The SceneSas part of their association with Theatre in the Mill, Northern Lines have commissioned Helen Wilkinson, former participant and their first associate practitioner, to spend her youth and community placement from Bradford College engaging with a group of young roma women from across our city. The project combines youth work principles with forum theatre techniques to encourage and explore the narrative of the group whilst identifying and empowering a group of cultural ambassadors. Marking the end of this stage of the project will be a celebration event with a creative sharing of the findings performed by the group, followed by a discussion/Q&a.
