Greetings, and thanks for joining us today. By now, I’m sure you’ve heard the news about our upcoming season. I hope you are as excited as we are about the selection of shows we are presenting next year. We’re kicking off our season with the outrageously funny Priscilla Queen of the Desert, a mature-themed but uplifting story about friendship and the bonds that last a lifetime. Afterwards, we’ll celebrate the holidays with Elf – The Musical, a tale that reminds us about the true meaning of the season.

Just after the new year, the spirit of the legendary band Queen will fill the theatre with We Will Rock You, featuring 24 of the band’s biggest hits. Immediately following, audiences will rediscover the grandeur of the classic hit The Wizard of Oz, featuring an all new set design and several new songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

We’ll wrap up the season with two more favorites. Fresh off the Broadway stage, the story of Eva Perón will come alive with Evita. Finally, we’ll take a trip under the sea with Ariel and her friends in one of Disney’s most memorable productions – The Little Mermaid.

With such an exciting season, I hope you'll consider becoming a season subscriber. Purchasing a subscription is the best way to ensure that you’ll get not only the best ticket prices but also the best seats. Other benefits of a subscription include easy ticket exchanges and swaps, lost ticket insurance, online ticket transfers, and a discount at our boutique store Encore.

To take advantage of all the benefits of a subscription, visit TUTS.com or speak to one of our box office representatives by dialing 713.558.TUTS (8887).

Thanks again for joining us, and we look forward to another great year together!

Thank you for joining us for this inspiring production of Man of La Mancha. As the director, it is a privilege for me to personally welcome you to the show, and I sincerely hope that you enjoy our production of this world-renowned musical.

Based on Miguel de Cervantes’ 1605 novel Don Quixote, which is considered to be one of the world’s greatest literary works, Man of La Mancha is one theatrical adaptation of the imaginative tale that has become just as beloved and well-known as the original novel.

If you ask an assortment of people from various countries and cultures if they know Man of La Mancha, most know the show through the song The Impossible Dream and can usually sing it—or parts of it anyway. I believe that this song, this story rather, is memorable and appealing cross generationally due to what it represents—hope and the courage to continue to do so despite all odds.

Both Don Quixote and Man of La Mancha inspire us to hope and to dream through the imaginary character conceived by Alonso Quijana—Don Quixote, the Man of La Mancha. However, Man of La Mancha is more so about the story of Miguel de Cervantes and the reality of the world in which he is living in late 16th century Spain—a world dominated by turmoil and fear due to the Spanish Inquisition.

Lasting from 1478 to 1834, the Spanish Inquisition was one of the darkest and most controversial religious-secular institutions ever established in order to discover, investigate, and punish heretics—or anyone with different beliefs than that of the Catholic Church—for a number of “crimes.” Prisoners of the Inquisition could spend days, months, or years in poor prison conditions awaiting a trial for which there was rarely any evidence. Torture was

Bruce LumpkinArtistic Director

often employed to gain a confession, and about two to three thousand of the guilty were burned at the stake, or “relaxed.” The Inquisition caused most of the Spanish populace to live in a constant state of fear and for neighbor to turn against neighbor without just cause.

Unfortunately, human tragedy instigated by other humans neither began nor ended with the Spanish Inquisition, and more recent tragedies leave us questioning whether they will ever come to an end. In the 1940s, the leaders of Nazi Germany persistently and methodically set out to eliminate all so-called undesirables from society. From 1950-1956, McCarthyism swept America causing thousands of Americans to be accused of disloyalty or treason without proper regard for evidence. More recently, terrorists have targeted random members of society in an effort to advance their political agenda. Like the Spanish Inquisition, all of these describe situations in which one group tried to eliminate another group because of differences in backgrounds and beliefs. Where is the hope in all of this?

My goal for Man of La Mancha is to depict Cervantes’ world, the prison, and the prisoners genuinely. The prisoners within the musical are representations of people who lived through this horrific time, and Cervantes takes the raucous prisoners on a journey through the opposing worlds of reality and imagination by improvising the story of Don Quixote. Not only does he offer hope and courage to the prisoners but also to himself before he faces the Inquisitors. If the prisoners, as they candidly are, can be moved and inspired by this holistic story to “dream the impossible dream” in their world, then I hope that we can be affected and encouraged by the same story in the world we live in today.

The compelling story presented in Man of La Mancha inspires us to hope and to dream despite our circumstances, and in our current world and cultural climate, hope is something truly beautiful and desirable.

It is my wish that we will all dare to hope and to dream so that, in the words of the Man of La Mancha, we might “add some measure of grace to the world.”

Here’s to the “Impossible Dream!”

Theatre Under The Stars is funded in part by grants from the City of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board and the Theater District, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

In 1957, in the small Texas town of Liberty, a Texas non-profit foundation was formed which has become a leader in supporting Texas cultural and educational activities. The Humphreys Foundation of Liberty, Texas was established by the generosity of its founder and benefactor, the late Geraldine Davis Humphreys. Over the years, the Foundation has been an especially generous contributor to many Houston performing arts organizations, including Theatre Under The Stars, the Alley Theatre, the Houston Grand Opera, the Society for the Performing Arts, the Houston Ballet and the Houston Symphony. The Foundation has generously supported TUTS since its founding, including the establishment of The Humphreys School of Musical Theatre, TUTS’ training wing.

Today, under the leadership of Linda Bertman and the other trustees, Louis B. Paine and Robert B. Wall, The Humphreys Foundation continues its distinguished tradition of philanthropy. Theatre Under The Stars is proud of its long relationship and is honored to salute the outstanding contributions of The Humphreys Foundation.

After earning his BFA from the University of Houston, Mr. Lumpkin got his start in theatre here at TUTS as the resident director of the Humphreys School. He soon caught the attention of Tommy Tune, who tapped Mr. Lumpkin to work on several Broadway titles including Grand Hotel, My One and Only, Nine, Stepping Out, and The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. His career has taken him to several respected theatres across the nation including the 5th Avenue Theatre, Cape Fear Regional Theatre, Casa Manana, Dicapo Opera Company, Hertigage Entertainment, the Lyric Theatre, Maine State Musical Theatre, North Shore Music Theatre, the Pittsburgh CLO and Walnut Street Theatre. He counts Summer ’69 and Honky Tonk Angel among his off-Broadway work, and he served as the artistic director to Broadway’s Mindfreak featuring illusionist Criss Angel. Additionally, Mr. Lumpkin co-directed Grand Hotel on London’s West End and served on the creative team for the national tours of Dr. Doolittle and Nine. He received the Barrymore Award for Best Director and Best Musical for his revisionist look at Cabaret. Other personal milestones for Mr. Lumpkin include his work in the world premieres of Dodsworth and Grossingers and the US premiere of La Vie En Bleu. Mr. Lumpkin and his family are thrilled to return to Houston, the city where he grew up, and to work at TUTS, the same theatre that gave him his start in the industry. When not at the theatre, Mr. Lumpkin spends his time with his wife Michelle and his children Ash and Lyla.

DONORS LEAD THE CHARGE FOR TUTS!

Man of La Mancha tells the story of a humble squire who is transformed into the gallant knight. TUTS’ heroes in shining armor are all over this audience and the greater Houston community.

These generous individuals and families love musical theatre and believe it should be shared. Through their gifts, they make it possible for TUTS to provide spectacular shows like the one you’re enjoying today AND education programs that take musical theatre beyond the stage and into the community.

We asked some of these friends why they support TUTS.

I have seen many shows in New York, London, and elsewhere, and

the quality of the TUTS performers and staging is world class. On a community level, TUTS is

beneficial to our community in that it helps round out

an outstanding Houston performing arts center as an

attraction for both residents and non-residents.

– Charles W. Hall, subscriber & donor, Fulbright & Jaworski LLP

I don’t think we’ve ever seen a bad show. I remember when they did Gone With The Wind under the stars. Back in those days, we used to take a blanket, a picnic lunch and sit on the grass and watch the show. The kids loved it too because they could run around in the park for a bit and then watch the show.

It was just such a delightful experience.– Sybil Roos, longtime subscriber & donor

Our individual donors are recognized on pages 29-34 . Please take a moment to join us in celebrating these generous heroes.

If you’d like to be a knight in shining armor for TUTS, please email or call Mary Beth Mosley at 713.558.2651 or [email protected].
