FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear TheatreWorks Friends,

It is a pleasure to report to you on our 40th anniversary year. Wecouldn’t have asked for a better year to celebrate this importantmilestone, and the success of the season is a good sign that wewill be sharing great art with Silicon Valley audiences for at least 40 more years.

As we entered last year, the entire Valley was still reeling from the effects of the economic downturn, and TheatreWorks was noexception. Despite this, we planned an ambitious season onstage, and we launched major initiatives to support our art.

The season started with the newly expanded New Works Festival—a truly spectacular event, featuring two full weeks of reading and special events. This Festival was made possible through our partnership withMicrosoft, as well as funds raised as part of the Campaign for Art & Innovation. In addition to the Festival,we presented 8 mainstage plays, 4 of which were in the top ten grossing plays in TheatreWorks’ history. We are especially proud that in a challenging economic climate, TheatreWorks was able to put great artonstage, and that our audiences responded accordingly.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, TheatreWorks revamped its ticketing system and its website, which enabled usto provide much better online information to our audience members. Our online ticket sales increased morethan 100%, and we were able to reach potential audience members through more detailed information onthe website. We look forward to continuing to use technology to bring TheatreWorks to a broader audience.

We also had a great year for our New Works and Education programs. The Education program reached children of all ages, from preschool campers to high school playwrights. Over 14,500 students enjoyedTheatreWorks’ programs through TheatreWorks for Schools. Our New Works programs started with theFestival, but they did not end there. We held a Writers Retreat in the winter, and were able to support several playwrights and composers throughout the year. Through the New Works and Education programs, TheatreWorks nurtured the next great artists and art appreciators.

As we approached the end of last year, we celebrated our 40th anniversary with an amazing party. Leadinglights of American theatre came out to honor Robert Kelley as the artistic honoree, including David HenryHwang, Jeanine Tesori, Paul Gordon, Vienna Teng, and Valerie Vigoda and Brendan Milburn of GrooveLily.Technology leaders came out in large numbers to honor Frank Quattrone, our innovation honoree. With over 600 attendees, Gala 40 was the perfect bookend to cap the year.

We hope you enjoyed this past year at the theatre as much as we enjoyed sharing it with you. I’m lookingforward to seeing you at the theatre for another great year next season.

All the best,

Carey PickusChair, Board of Trustees

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

What a glorious year for the art of TheatreWorks! Launched withthe debut of our greatly-expanded New Works Festival, our2009/10 season was outstanding in every way, and four of oureight mainstage shows joined the company’s list of top ten bestsellers. We celebrated our 40th birthday with two world premieres, won seven awards for excellence from the Bay Area TheatreCritics Circle (including Best Musical), and reveled in the runaway success of our anniversary tribute, Gala 40. Finally, inan astounding year-end finale, the TheatreWorks-premieredmusical Memphis won four Tony Awards® in New York, includingBest Musical of the Year.

And what wonderful shows we shared! Set in a backwoodssmithy, the world premiere musical Tinyard Hill launched the season with what The Daily News called a “triumph for TheatreWorks…a tale full of charm, warmth, humor, and social importance.” On its heels, theregional premiere of David Henry Hwang’s Yellow Face featured the brilliant Francis Jue in a hilarious butpoignant “must-see show, rare in its honesty.” (Palo Alto Weekly) “The Chosen packs a hefty punch,” ravedthe San Francisco Chronicle about our powerful October drama, and equal success greeted our unique holiday premiere A Civil War Christmas; it was hailed by The Mercury News as “A richly detailed musical tapestry…a timeless message of shared humanity.” January brought the season’s biggest hit, the delightfulworld premiere of Paul Gordon and John Caird’s romance Daddy Long Legs. Metro Silicon Valley called it “a musical that redefines musicals…a revolutionary piece of theatre,” and it has since toured throughout the country. “A family comedy with truly delightful results” (Palo Alto Weekly), the wacky Sunsets andMargaritas offered a mid-winter tribute to our Latino community, soon followed by Harper Lee’s moving ToKill a Mockingbird, which the San Francisco Bay Times described as “100% superb!” When the string quartetof Opus wowed the Bay Area in June, online arts review Stark Silver Creek concluded, “Opus is a truly wonderful capstone to TheatreWorks’ 40th season, which has been, by all definitions, a smashing success.”

In a year that doubled attendance at our New Works Festival, offered two world premieres, featured at onepoint, five different TheatreWorks-developed shows performing around the country, and concluded with aTony Award®, it’s fair to say that new works have become the highlight of TheatreWorks’ art. We are proud to reflect the spirit of innovation that defines our Silicon Valley, proud of the 80 new plays and musicals wehave helped develop since launching our New Works Initiative a decade ago. With solid support from TheNational Endowment for the Arts, the Irvine, Hewlett, and Packard Foundations, innovative corporationssuch as Microsoft, and the dedicated donors of The Inner Circle, New Works Director Meredith McDonoughhas brought exciting new authors and composers to the company and national attention to our work. Mostimportantly, the wealth of exciting works in development allowed us to select an unprecedented three worldpremieres for the 2010/11 season.

Our 40th year. It is hard to imagine a more inspiring, memorable, and rewarding season. As TheatreWorksbegins its fifth decade, we have seen our reputation for artistic excellence and theatrical innovation soar tonew heights throughout the Bay Area and across the nation. It has been a thrill and an honor sharing thisanniversary year with all of you.

Warmly yours,

Robert KelleyFounder and Artistic Director

Second, we movedthe Festival from the Second Stage Theatre at the MVCPA to the larger Lucie Stern Theatre, expanded the number of pieces from four to six, and expanded programming from twoweeks to five.

The 2009 Festival featured six staged readings of new musicals and plays including:

• Ernest Shackleton Loves Me by Joe DiPietro, Valerie Vigoda, and Brendan Milburn

• Makeover by Darrah Cloud and Kim D. Sherman

• Tales from the Bad Years by Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk

• Auctioning the Ainsleys by Laura Schellhardt

• The North Pool by Rajiv Joseph

• The Sparrow and the Birdman by Raquel Bitton and Chris Smith.

In April 2010, five different shows originally workshopped or world premiered atTheatreWorks were running simultaneously at theatres nationwide including: Memphis atThe Shubert Theatre on Broadway, Daddy Long Legs at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park,Tinyard Hill at Cumberland County Playhouse in Tennessee, Girlfriend at Berkeley RepertoryTheatre, and Equivocation at Marin Theatre Company.

GALA 40: May 8, 2010

To commemorate our 40th anniversary season, the company hosted a celebratory Gala event, including a formal dinner at the Microsoft campus, a live auction, and a spectacularstar studded concert. In all ways, Gala 40 was a triumph.

Over the course of the evening, the crowd celebrated the accomplishments of two SiliconValley pioneers who nurtured great talent and changed the face of our community:TheatreWorks Founder and Artistic Director Robert Kelley for Innovation in the Arts andSilicon Valley leader Frank Quattrone for Innovation in Technology.

At the dinner, the contributions of Frank Quattrone were highlighted, noting that he hasadvised technology companies on more than 400 mergers and acquisitions. In a uniquelyTheatreWorks manner, he was celebrated with a customized song performed by RietteBurdick and joined by many friends and business associates who gathered at Microsoft to celebrate him.

The event not only commemorated our 40th anniversary and honored Artistic Director RobertKelley’s on-going dedication to the company he founded, it also acknowledged TheatreWorks’contribution to the theatre arts field as an artistic home for playwrights and composers fromacross the country. Celebrated guests included the renowned playwright David Henry Hwangwho emceed the event, musicians Brendan Milburn, Valerie Vigoda, and Vienna Teng whocomposed and sang “The House that Kelley Built” as a valentine to Robert Kelley. TonyAward®-winning composer Jeanine Tesori and composer Paul Gordon also poignantly attested first-hand and sometimes in song how TheatreWorks and Kelley have instrumentallyinfluenced their work. The concert also included video-greetings from various illustrious lyricists and composers including Andrew Lippa, Stephen Schwartz, David Bryan, Joe DiPietro, and Broadway/film actor Zeljko Ivanek who said “I still measure every new works experienceagainst the time I spent at TheatreWorks.”

Gala 40 successfully championed the TheatreWorks story. Our forty-year commitment to ourcore values of artistic excellence, diversity, innovation, collaboration, and celebration of thehuman spirit, was repeatedly heralded and congratulated with every performance and speech. To top it all off, Gala 40 raised over $500,000!

CAMPAIGN FOR ART & INNOVATIONThe Campaign reaches its halfway mark!

Since 1970, TheatreWorks has grown from a grassroots arts organization into a major cultural institution. As we celebrated our 40th year, the company embarked on a $3.3 millioncapital campaign to enhance our reputation for artistic innovation, expand our identity as amodel for the development of new works, and strengthen our business structure to ensure a long-term future. The campaign will provide funding in three areas:

THE ART OF INNOVATIONNew work has always been the heartbeat of TheatreWorks. Our New Works Initiative is a truly unique program providing artists with the opportunity to collaborate and develop their pieces during every stage of the creative process; from an idea to a full-scale production. The New Works Festival and premiere productions are integral to its success.

PUTTING THEATREWORKS ON THE MAPTheatreWorks has often been called the “Best Kept Secret.”A dedicated visibility campaignwill engage a broader audience in our meaningful work. By effectively communicating whatwe do with more people in our local communities and in the national theatre arena, our family will extend from coast to coast.

ENGAGING AUDIENCES THROUGH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGYTheatreWorks has a long history of investing in great art. Now we will be able to match our antiquated technology with our high production values. By infusing our systems withstate-of-the-art resources, we will empower our mainstage work, provide an exceptionalpatron experience, and become the virtual artistic home of Silicon Valley.

With $1.3 million contributed as of June 30, 2010, we have already deepened our commitmentto new work by successfully expanding our New Works Festival and producing six world premieres since 2009. We have also implemented a robust database that combines donationand ticket information. In addition, we have fully redesigned our website to making it moreinteractive and to giving improved access to online ticket purchases and exchanges.

Contributions to the Campaign for Art & Innovation will ensure the vitality and sustainabilityof TheatreWorks onstage and off, both here in the Bay Area and across the country.

FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR

In TheatreWorks’ 40th year of operations, we generated anoperational surplus of $349,937. Coming off of a 39th seasonwhich had seen an operating loss during the worst of the economic downturn, TheatreWorks responded by re-organizingthe company for 2009/1010: scaling back with an eye toward ashrinking economy and needing to mitigate the impact of the2008/09 shortfall.

The fact that TheatreWorks was able to generate a surplus, exceed many of its income goals, and maintain a strong hold onexpenses was the result of careful oversight and creative newapproaches to revenue generation.

First, single ticket sales dramatically exceeded goal, with 7 of the 8 productions meeting or exceedingincome projections and 4 of the 8 productions landing in TheatreWorks top 10 highest grossing shows.

Second, individual giving, which had seen a slowdown in the first part of calendar year 2009, reboundedquickly, especially in the upper level categories for individual donors. Indeed, the number of households giving $10,000 or more reached an all-time high.

Finally, Gala 40 exceeded all expectations, both in attendance, sales, and auction revenue. The highestgrossing fundraising event in TheatreWorks history, Gala 40 not only generated record income, it made asignificant statement to Silicon Valley about the role of TheatreWorks as a developer of new work. As anincubator for the creation of new plays and musicals, TheatreWorks shares core values with the tech field inSilicon Valley. The success of the “messaging” at this high profile event should have a positive impact onTheatreWorks’ community position and revenues for years to come.

An important decision made during 2009/10 was to launch a Campaign for Art & Innovation—a $3.3 millioncampaign to invest in key areas that could lead to long-term growth. Drawn from TheatreWorks’ currentstrategic plan, the campaign funds technology to bolster ticket sales, invests in new works development andefforts to build TheatreWorks’ visibility and brand.

The campaign initiatives have borne early and impressive results. From the 2008/09 season to the 2009/10season, online single ticket sales roughly doubled as a percentage of total single ticket sales. Attendance atthe New Works Festival—an annual activity that is a core to our artistic mission and to our community andnational visibility—tripled over the same period. Despite the economic downturn, Board, staff and Campaigndonors all agreed that this investment in long-term financial health and stability was a priority for 2009/10,and will continue through the 2010/11 season.

Thank you to all who made our 40th anniversary season an unforgettable success, and to all the individuals, foundations, and companies who have supported TheatreWorks over the years. Together, we can continue togrow and explore the future of TheatreWorks on the stage, in the schools, and throughout our community.
