SEPTEMBER 2013

A communication for employees of the Ohio Masonic Home and its affiliated organizations

As the summer comes to a close and we head into the fall, I want to take a moment and reflect on all we have accomplished over these past few months. This year saw a brand new Home Day festival, where families spent the day riding on a horse-drawn carriage, going up in a hot air balloon, and trying to hit the target at the dunk tank. It was great to see everyone together in fellowship and enjoying all of the activities Home Day had to offer. As we moved into the end of July I felt blessed to see the fruition of so much time and effort in the form of two new memory care centers. On Wednesday July 24, Browning Masonic Community in Waterville, Ohio held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the public to celebrate the opening of Pathways at Browning. It was a blessed day with cool temperatures and blue skies as our staff, residents and community members joined us. On Sunday July 28, Western Reserve Masonic Community in Medina, Ohio opened the doors to the Connecting Realities memory care center with a similar ceremony. These state-of-the-art neighborhoods are designed for those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Each has special design features which aid in the independence of residents, and help to ease the stress of their loved ones. August saw the 2nd Annual Miracle Miles for Memory Care Road Rally to benefit the memory care centers. I would like to thank all of the employees who participated in and helped support this event. It was quite a sight to see so many familiar faces together for a great and successful cause. At the end of the day it is important to remember that as a whole the Ohio Masonic Home cannot function without such dedicated employees, and for that I thank each and every one of you. In reflecting on the past summer and the events that we have had, I cannot help but think of the initial reason for the founding of the Home. We began as a place to care for Masons, their widows and orphans. Today we continue that mission in ways the founding Masons could only dream. Thank you for your hard work and dedication and for choosing the Ohio Masonic Home as your employer.

Importance

You know exercise is good for you, but do you know just how good? Well, I’m happy you asked! Exercise can boost your mood, relieve stress and in general, improve your overall quality of life! Here are 5 of great reasons to exercise (in no particular order)

1. Exercise can help control your weight. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn. A common myth is you need to set aside hours each day to achieve this. You don’t! Try taking a brisk 30-45 minute walk each day. Can’t find that block of time? Well break it up in to 3-4 ten to 15 minute walks per day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. A little goes a long way!

2. Exercise combats health conditions and diseases. Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent high blood pressure? No matter what your current weight, being active boosts your HDL or “good” cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. This keeps your blood flowing smoothly, which decreases your risk of cardiovascular disease. Regular activity can help you prevent or manage a wide range of health problems and concerns including stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, certain types of cancer and arthritis.

3. Exercise improves mood. Need an emotional lift? Or need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A workout at the gym, a nice run, or a brisk walk can do wonders to boost your mood. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. Exercise has also been shown to improve self esteem and confidence.

4. Exercise boosts energy. Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance. Exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. When your heart and lungs are working well, you have more energy!

5. Exercise can be fun! Yes, you read that right! Not a fan of walking, running or going to the gym? No problem! Try getting a group of friends together for a game of kick ball. Remember doing hopscotch? Buy some chalk, draw some squares and away you go! How about the hula hoop? Try doing 20 minutes hula hooping and see just how sweaty you get. I guarantee you, it will not only be fun, but it may take you back to some really fond memories of your childhood.

The main thing to remember is this: any exercise is better than none. Once you start you will be hooked! Now, get out there and move!

Memories

Kimberly Valco has been an employee at Western Reserve Masonic Community(WRMC) for the past 11 years, working for the previous owner, The Oaks at Medina, for the preceding two years. Over the past 13 years she has seen many changes. All of them, in her opinion, have been for the betterment of the living environment for the residents who have resided at WRMC.

When Kimberly started out her children were five, seven and 13. This month she sends her youngest off to college. It is a bittersweet moment, but it is chock full of wonderful memories: 1st day of school, prom, graduation. Two of her children chose to work at Western Reserve in the Dietary Department while attending high school.

When asked, “What is your fondest memory,” Kimberly replied, “My fondest memory is of the time when my kids still believed in the magic of Christmas. While holidays are still special in our house, it is not the same.”

First as a Receptionist, then as a Marketing Representative, and now as Marketing Manager, Kimberly has had the opportunity to meet and get to know residents and families on a personal level. In Kimberly’s mind the one memory that stands out among the many she has collected, is of a time when a resident and his wife moved in from out of state and struggled with the move and questioned their decision to move to Western Reserve. Kimberly asked them to be patient

and give it some time. A few weeks went by and they came to Kimberly and told her, “This feels like home. We definitely belong here.”

Kimberly was happy she encouraged them to give it some time and gratified that they settled in and loved living here.

As life ebbs and flows, memories are made. Kimberly has a whole boat load of

memories of family, friends, and residents both with us now and those that are no longer here. All of them she keeps close to

her heart to be taken out every so often to be enjoyed over and over again.

and Reflection

Do you have a whiney one, a bossy one, or even one that is a picky eater? Well that is what we spent one Friday night “remembering” when my family could not decide what movie we would watch. My son, Triton stated, “I know what we can watch” and he goes to the closet and brings out a box of old VHS tapes which as a family we had never watched. They were of my kids from the time they were born- through all the Christmases in which each one was added to the family. We watched as the first Christmas was so quiet and subdued to the Christmas of 2005 in which there were four of them- very small all trying to open gifts at the same time. I heard comments as we watched like...”oh! I did not know I was like that” to “wow! mom you looked tired.”

Well girls I was tired. The movies included: trips to Disney eight years ago, plays, first soccer games and dance recitals in which each of them participated. The six hours were full of great times and lots of laughs being shared as the kids for the first time reminisced about their early years and saw how we have changed and grown as a family. I am so proud of each of them.

When Lucas Beck was two years old I brought him to Browning on the second Sunday in August to witness the annual Zenobia Shrine’s Fun Motorcycle Run. Lucas was scared to death by all the big people and the sounds of 100 motorcycles! Now, Lucas at age seven came to same event this year with me and begged for a ride on Reggie’s motorcycle. What a difference five years can make! At two he held on to me for dear life while the bikes roared past. This year he didn’t even bat an eye when he took off on that bike, both memories are precious.

What a difference5 Years Make!

By: Sharon ElliottMeantime, Lucas’s younger sister Mia strikes a pose in her dancing costume! The recital was a huge success and she danced her little heart out up on that stage with 18 other little girls. The moment came when the recital was over, we handed her a bouquet of flowers for her first performance and bombarded her with compliments on her dancing prowess. When asked if she wanted to be in another recital she replied, “no I already did that” – she has since moved on to Karate!

By: A friend Cecelia Kinor and her husband Frank are rabid, I mean avid fans of the Toledo Mud Hens. They even appear in the Mud Hens commercials on TV! I am pretty sure they have been building memories around the team for years with family and friends, and that she would like to share, but is just too darn busy to write them up.

the Ball Game

By: Linda Wolfe When our son Andrew was a little boy, my parents flew to Florida to meet us for a summer vacation. My Dad and Andrew had so much fun playing in the swimming pool splashing and being too loud together. My Mother and I would sit at the side of the pool and just laugh at the two of them! This was a daily event, and they always drew a crowd of retired onlookers who looked forward to seeing them. My mother and I laughed about that fun summer for years!

Note: Linda’s mother has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and she was thrilled to be able to see her mother and be remembered.
