WELCOME BACK: Well it’s been a bit of a whirl-wind induction into Cairns West State School but I finally feel like I’m starting to get my head around things. After 20 years in Yarrabah, there’s a lot to learn coming into a new school and community. I must say, I have felt very welcomed by students, staff and families and have sincerely appreciated the support to date.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL: A huge thank you to Mr Flower & Mr P for organising such a sensational athletics carnival last term. It was fantastic to see so many parents supporting the event and so many children having such a great time. Thank you also to all of our staff for ensuring the day ran smoothly and Mr Hayman for having the grounds in such great shape and making sure the sun was shining! Congratulations to Hastings house for winning this year’s carnival. Congratulations also to all of our students for their great participation, especially those who were selected to represent Cairns West State School at the TCC carnival on 6 August.
FAREWELL Mrs Farrugia: Sadly, we said goodbye to Mrs Tracy Farrugia at the end of last term. Tracy has set off on an adventure around Australia to commence her retirement after a dedicated and fulfilling career in education. Tracy’s service to Cairns West school and community has been significant, having been a student, teacher aide, prac student, parent, P & C member and teacher at our school. On behalf of Cairns West State School, I thank Tracy for her contribution to our school community and wish her every success in the next chapter of her life. Tracy will be dearly missed by the Special Education team as well as staff and students at our school.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS: Next Tuesday afternoon we will hold our 3 Way Interviews. Please use this opportunity to get an update on how your child is going at school and discuss ways we can better work together to support their education.
REPORT CARDS: Semester 1 report cards will be distributed this week. Please use your child’s report card to support with 3 Way Interviews next Tuesday. Semester 1 report cards were deliberately pushed back a week this year to provide students with as much time as possible in semester 1 to demonstrate their learning. Parent understanding is appreciated.
INTERSCHOOL SPORTING EVENTS (T2W10): During the last week of term, a selection of our upper primary students attended three separate interschool events. On Thursday 24 June, we had students compete in the Karen Murphy Cup (girls rugby league competition) and a separate group competed in the `Deadly 5's Hockey NAIDOC Carnival’. The following day we had a team participate in the Phil Minniecon Cricket Carnival. Reports back were that our students thoroughly enjoyed the events and their behaviour and sportsmanship was exemplary. Thank you to the staff involved in coordinating these events and parents who went along to support……...Yours in Education Jason
CALANNA JUNIOR SPEAKING COMPETITION - August 2021

Sweet Treats at the Junior Sports Carnival
Year 6 Covid Safe Market Stalls
In the last week of school, year 6 students set up market stalls and designed, built and programmed robots to deliver handmade sweet treats safely to their customers. This is part of their Semester 1 CWSS
Design Technologies and Business Studies projects. The year 6 students worked very hard to apply for a business loan, work within a budget, go shopping for ingredients, bake, package their product and design a complete advertising campaign for their businesses.
During the first break on Junior Sports Carnival day, they set up market stalls for staff and students to buy their delicious homemade Ice Cream Sandwiches, Mallow Wedges, Chocolate Truffles and Chocolate Bars for $2 each.
The students made $518
They will reinvest part of the earnings this term and come up with another awesome way to keep their businesses growing and profiting.
Money raised will go towards the 2021 GRADUATION PARTY!
Thank you for your support!

What are Wind
Spinners?
In Science, Prep P
have been learning
about what materials
things are made
from. We had lots of fun making a Wind
Spinner using a plast i c water bot t le.
Wind Spinners are made by decorating the plastic
water bottle with permanent markers and then an
adult has to cut the bottle. We tied string
around the top, so we can hang our Wind
Spinners up outside. By Prep P
