A PERSONAL NOTE FROM THE PASTOR

1619–2019

Greetings, Cote Brilliante Family,

Much inquiry, dialogue, writings, publications and documentaries have surfaced over the last few years, par-ticularly the last few months, concerning the history and dilemma of the African-American in the United States of America. By history I mean 1619-2019, the slavery, oppres-sion and racism, the accompanying psychological enslave-ment (Black-on-Black crime) and the ensuing struggle. The achievements and accomplishments, the successes, triumphs and victories that define the survival and dem-onstrate the ability to thrive during the four-hundred years are not forgotten. But woven deeply into the impact and stigma of the spiritually, physically and emotionally emas-culating and infectious 400 year experience is the dilemma of the African-American community who, along with its leadership, including clergy, are calling on the oppressor (federal, state and local governments) to create strategic plans, develop programs and provide funding to save the Black community from the oppressor imposed racism and psychological enslavement. To make it plain we are asking various government entities, which are designed to op-press people of color, to provide the Black community with resources to stop the oppressive assaults the government entities are designed to impose. That is not likely to hap-pen on the level and scale that is deemed necessary.

Case in point, on Thursday September 5, 2019, along with at least twenty other faith leaders, Christian, Muslim and Jewish, a meeting was held with Missouri Governor Mike Parson. Each attendee was given the opportunity to ask questions of the Governor concerning the overwhelm-ing acts of gun violence, the gun related deaths of our children and the escalation of urban crime which was the purpose for the meeting. My question, “After one mass shooting in March this year, in April the New Zealand Par-liament voted 119 to 1 to ban assault weapons and impose gun control laws. Why can’t the United States, Missouri in particular, enact legislation to ban assault weapons and impose gun control laws? Several studies have shown that stricter gun laws are associated with significantly fewer gun deaths. Will you support gun control legislation?” No posi-tive or affirming response was given.

African-Americans are yet victimized by the residual effects of slavery (economically, educationally, politically and socially). Any attempt to rise above these residuals, which are like smoldering ashes carrying the stench of slavery, must be empowered by a source greater than the intimidating grip of the oppressive entities, which are driv-en by spirits of greed and selfishness that have corrupted the fundamentals of capitalism. Today, America’s wealth, accumulated at the expense of slavery and oppression, has become even more greedy, selfish and corrupt beginning with the leadership in charge.

Considering the above, what if the African-Ameri-can community identified its own resources and explored its own capacity to address those issues and concerns that afflict its people? What if our religious faith community, Christian, Muslim and Jewish alike began to work closer together, in a collective capacity, investing in small busi-nesses, housing, transportation and education? What if the faith community created its own strategic plan and developed substantive programs that effectively impact positive change for the safety and progressive development of our neighborhoods? Our Congressman is willing to help, along with our State Senator and State Representative, our Police Commissioner and our Director of Public Safety, and our Circuit Attorney is supportive. But the church, the mosque, the temple must lead.

Shall we continue to place our trust in a system and sow into an economy that are designed to oppress and control? Must we continue to supply the prison industrial complex with our young men and women, which extracts potential for creative and healthy futures? If we say we know God, it seems as though we ought to call on, trust and follow God. African-Americans have an intensely rich cultural history of survival, which obviously has only been sustained by God. Where, what and how is our faith? Something must be done! “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:17) Agonizingly and mournfully, “dead” is what we keep getting at the expense of our children. Four hundred years is enough! Change is up to the oppressed not the oppressor.

—Reverend Crumpton

14th Annual William G Gillespie Praise Is What We Do Concert

The William G Gillespie Scholarship Committee presented its 14th Annual Praise Is What We Do Benefit Concert on April 13th. In addition to featuring Gospel and Spiritual music, new per-formances were added to the program this year, which included poems and praise dance.

The Praise Is What We Do Concert is one of two annual fund-raisers sponsored by the Scholarship Committee. The proceeds are used to provide awards to deserving students. As a result of your loving, caring, and sharing, we have been able to award over $400,000 in scholarships to local students.

I AM WITH YOU

The 2019 annual Dorcas Circle Luncheon was held on June 5th in the Cote Brilliante Fellowship Hall. The theme was God’s Promise: I Am With You, written by Amy Poling Sutherlun, from the 2018 –2019 Horizons Bible Study for Presbyterian Women.

The Dorcas Circle is thankful for the continued support of Reverend Crumpton and all of Cote Brilliante. We are especially grateful to Rosalynde Scott and Clara Wright for their generous sponsorship of several women from our neighborhood.

If you are interested in joining our women’s Bible Study, our next study will be Love Carved in Stone — A Fresh Look at the Ten Commandments written by Eugenia Anne Gamble. We meet on the first and third Tuesdays from 12:15 until 2p, September through June.

Building Community St Louis

Lifeline Chaplaincy, along with the sponsorship of Charter / Spectrum and support of Rebuilding Together, provided a dinner at Cote Brilliante on May 15th as part of their Build-ing Community initiative. Reverend John Revell, Lead Chaplain, Life Line Chaplaincy, Inc of New Jersey moderated the evening.

Members of the congregation, the community, Rebuilding Together, officers of the St Louis City Police Department and Charter/Spectrum executive Rahman Khan enjoyed good food and shared in positive fellowship.

This dinner was the kickoff of another home repair day in which the police officers along with other volunteers make much needed repairs to homes in the community. Last year four homes in this neighborhood (including two CBPC members)benefited from the program.

Rahman Khan, who serves as Vice President, Community Impact for Charter Communications / Spec-trum, in Stamford, CT, leading its flagship philanthropic and community engagement programs, and setting direction for how employees volunteer was one of the speakers. Spectrum has made a considerable investment in improving underserved communities. Police Chief John Hayden was unable to attend due to his daughter’s gradu-ation, but there was a representative

contingent of officers present and sentiments were shared on his behalf.

On Saturday a fair was held at the YMCA on Page Avenue. The fair provided free information to attend-ees regarding jobs and free education opportunities. Other freebies included a Safe and Healthy Home Kit that included a first aid kit, smoke detector,

weatherproofing supplies, and an array of other useful items. And for those who are fans of Greenleaf on OWN (the Oprah Winfrey Network), actor Lamman Rucker, who plays Jacob Greenleaf — and also starred in Why Did I Get Married, Why Did I Get Mar-ried Too and The Browns — appeared and shared words of inspiration.

On June 30th, a hallelujah good time was had by all in attendance, when the Gospel Choir blessed the sanctuary with its spirit filled annual concert. Glory to the Lord was expressed through heart throbbing, foot stomping and hand clapping praise!

Our guest vocalists, Leslie Johnson and Cherise Carroll, shared their anointed talents as soloists and combined accompanists with the Gospel Choir.

Reports and critiques made subsequent to the conclusion of the concert conveyed by the attendees evaluated this concert as the best of any previously performed concert. They enjoyed the completeness of the concert, there were songs of worship, instru-mental devotion, liturgical dance and even a surprise birthday recognition for Elder Everett Page, Gospel Choir Director.

The officers and members of the Gospel Choir appreciate and give thanks for those who shared our event.— Submitted by Verase Parks

The 2019 annual Summer Program is completed, and the students had a very busy and exciting three weeks!

In the first week we learned that God knows each of our names, from Samuel’s experience of hear-ing God’s call. He learned that in order to hear God’s call, he had to listen.

We talked about Moses and how he didn’t believe he could do what God wanted him to do. But God made a way for him and showed Moses how God wanted him to tell his story.

We also reviewed the Apostolic Creed and memo-rized John 3:16

We experienced many fun activities: We bowled at Olivette Lanes, and it looks like we’ll have some really good bowlers in the years to come.

When we visited the Old Courthouse in St Louis, we heard from Lynn Jackson, great-great-granddaughter of Dred Scott. The students then re-enacted the second of five Dred Scott trials.

Students visited the Magic House, and the Con-temporary Art Museum.

Many of you made the Summer Program possible. We asked for volunteers and we were overwhelmed with those who agreed to join us. Thank God, everyone had a great time and we hope to see some of you back again next year!

We thank everyone who helped us raise money so that every student could participate in the program.

NEWS FROM THE PEWS

4400 Block of San Francisco Avenue Now “Sarah Tillard Lane”

On June 1st, the 4400 block of San Francisco Avenue was officially re-named “Sarah Tillard Lane.” Alderman John Collins Muhammad was on hand for the celebration, and presented Mrs Tillard with a plaque.

Mrs Tillard has lived on San Francisco Avenue since 1964, and has been a member of Cote Brilliante Presby-terian Church for 49 years. She is the mother of five, the grandmother of 11, the great-grandmother of 25 and the great-great-grandmother of three.

“I, Jordan Joshua-Jireh Hampton would like to extend a hearty thanks to the members of Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church and the William G Gillespie Scholarship committee for supporting me during my high school graduation, accepting my application for the scholarship and making me a recipient of the 2019 WGG scholarship Award.

I would also like to thank those of you that supported me and made it possible for

me to attend the 2018 Future Scientists and Medical Leaders Conference at the University of Massachusetts. It was a very in-formative and inspiring conference that allowed me to meet some of the most prominent physicians in the country. It also helped to enlighten me on the latest innovative medical procedures being done at this time.

All of your support will forever be remembered and will be cherished as I move forward in my journey as a college student at the University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana this Fall 2019.”
