Indian leader of the community

She was a loyal supporter of the Church and interpreter of its teachings to her neighbors

Damiana lived in one of the Luso-Brazilian houses

The only reliable Indian inhabitants were those like Damiana, she had been raised in the aldeia and knew no other way of life

• Gouveia went to Lisbon at about twenty years of age

• In 1557 he said under oath that he studied Latin and rhetoric at the University of Coimbra, but did not specify the year

• It might have been before he sailed for Italy in 1553 to further is education in theology and medicine in Rome

brother Pedro and his father were implicated in a murder

• Pedro was walking down the street and noticed the chief police guard for merchants leaning over the display counter of their fathers store, Pedro pulled out his sword and stabbed the chief in the back repeatedly
