Reading 1IS 45:1, 4-6Thus says the LORD to his anointed, Cyrus, whose right hand I grasp, subduing nations before him,and making kings run in his service, opening doors before himand leaving the gates unbarred:For the sake of Jacob, my servant,of Israel, my chosen one,I have called you by your name,

giving you a title, though you knew me not.I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me.It is I who arm you, though you know me not,so that toward the rising and the setting of the sunpeople may know that there is none be-sides me.I am the LORD, there is no other.

Reading 21 THES 1:1-5BPaul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessaloniansin God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:grace to you and peace. We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labor of loveand endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father, knowing, brothers and sisters loved by God,how you were chosen. For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction.

GospelMT 22:15-21The Pharisees went offand plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the Hero-dians, saying,“Teacher, we know that you are a truthful manand that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone’s opin-ion,for you do not regard a person’s status.Tell us, then, what is your opinion:

Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?”Knowing their malice, Jesus said,“Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?Show me the coin that pays the census tax.” Then they handed him the Roman coin.He said to them, “Whose image is this and whose inscription?”They replied, “Caesar’s.”At that he said to them,“Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesarand to God what belongs to God.”

Here I Am, Send Me! Today, on World Mission Sunday, we respond, “Here I Am, Send Me,” to our baptismal call to mission, and we offer, at the Eucharistic celebration, our prayers and our generous financial support, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, to continue the mission of Jesus. Today we are “sent” out to witness to mission in the world through our prayers and sacrifices for our broth-ers and sisters around the world.

World Mission Sunday 2020 The Society for the Propagation of the Faith

Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for World Mission Sunday 2020

“Here I Am, Send Me” (Isaiah 6:8) Five spiritual dimensions from the message of Pope Francis for the celebration of World Mission Sunday 2020.

Missionary Journey of the Church Continues, Despite Crisis “In this year marked by the suffering and challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the missionary journey of the whole Church continues in light of the words found in the account of the calling of the prophet Isaiah: ’Here I am, send me’ (6:8). This is the ever-new response to the Lord’s question: ‘Whom shall I send?’ (ibid.). This invitation from God’s merciful heart challenges both the Church and humanity as a whole in the current world crisis…. The call to mission, the invitation to step out of ourselves for love of God and neighbor presents itself as an opportunity for sharing, service and intercessory prayer. The mission that God entrusts to each one of us leads us from fear and introspection to a renewed realization that we find ourselves precisely when we give ourselves to others.” Jesus sends us because He is sent by God – God’s Missionary “(God) asks us to be personally willing to be sent, because He Himself is Love, Love that is always ‘on mission,’ always reaching out in order to give life. Out of His love for us, God the Father sent His Son Jesus (cf. Jn 3:16). Jesus is the Father’s Missionary: His life and ministry reveal His total obedience to the Father’s will (cf. Jn 4:34, 6:38, 8:12-30, Heb 10:5-10). Jesus, crucified and risen for us, draws us in turn into His mission of love, and with His Spirit which enlivens the Church, He makes us His disciples and sends us on a mission to the world and to its peoples.” Our Personal Response to God’s Call, “Whom Shall I Send?” “Mission is a free and conscious response to God’s call. Yet we discern this call only when we have a personal relationship of love with Jesus present in His Church. Let us ask ourselves: are we prepared to welcome the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, to listen to the call to mission, whether in our lives as married couples or as consecrated persons or those called to the ordained ministry, and in all the everyday events of life?” Hearing God’s Call During This Time of Pandemic “Understanding what God is saying to us at this time of pandemic also represents a challenge for the Church’s mission. Illness, suffering, fear and isolation challenge us…. This situation should make us even more attentive to our way of relating to others…. The impossibility of gathering as a Church to celebrate the Eucharist has led us to share the experience of the many Christian communities that cannot celebrate Mass every Sunday. In all of this, God’s question: ‘Whom shall I send?’ is addressed once more to us and awaits a generous and convincing response: ‘Here I am, send me’ (Is 6:8).” Sending Ourselves to Mission Through Prayer and Charity “The celebration of World Mission Sunday is also an occasion for reaffirming how prayer, reflection, and the material help of your offerings are so many opportunities to participate actively in the mission of Jesus in His Church. The charity expressed in the collections that take place during the liturgical celebrations of the third Sunday of October (10/18/20) is aimed at supporting the missionary work carried out in my name by the Pontifical Mission Societies, in order to meet the spiritual and material needs of peoples and Churches throughout the world, for the salvation of all.” Read the Holy Father’s complete message at this Vatican website.

Chalice & Stole Prayer Program

The purpose of the Chalice &Stole Program is to encouragefamilies to pray and promotevocations to the Priesthood.PRAYING FOR PRIESTLY VOCATIONS

Praying for vocations is the most powerful way tosupport vocations. A vocation is a call from the HolySpirit, a gift from God that is nurtured in prayer. Whenwe pray for vocations, we lift up to our Father thosemen and women whom He is calling to follow Him in avery special way. We hope that those who bring the cuphome will continue to pray daily for vocations.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

Each week at the 9:30 am Sunday Mass a family willtake the Chalice and Stole home for the week. They willreceive a book with daily prayers for Priestly Vocations.

Each day, during prayer time (morning, bedtime or atmeals), the family/household prays for an increase andperseverance of vocations.

At the end of the week they will return it at the 9:30 amMass for the next family.

St. Paul of the Cross

Saint of the Day for October 20(January 3, 1694 – October 18, 1775) Founded the Congregation of Passionists

Born in northern Italy in 1694, Paul Daneo lived at a time when many regarded Je-sus as a great moral teacher but no more. After a brief time as a soldier, he turned to solitary prayer, developing a devotion to Christ’s passion. Paul saw in the Lord’s passion a demonstration of God’s love for all people. In turn that devotion nurtured his compassion and supported a preaching ministry that touched the hearts of many listeners. He was known as one of the most popular preachers of his day, both for his words and for his generous acts of mercy.

In 1720, Paul founded the Congregation of the Passion, whose members combined devotion to Christ’s passion with preaching to the poor, and rigorous penances. Known as the Passionists, they add a fourth vow to the traditional three of poverty, chastity, and obedience, to spread the memory of

Christ’s passion among the faithful. Paul was elected superior general of the Congre-gation in 1747, spending the remainder of his life in Rome.

Paul of the Cross died in 1775, and was canonized in 1867. Over 2,000 of his let-ters and several of his short writings have survived.

What does it mean to form my conscience? Catholics have a long tradition of engagement in the public square. Sometimes that engagement requires making difficult moral decisions that impact our own lives and those of others. Our conscience can help guide the decisions we make. The Second Vatican Council guides us: “Always summoning [one] to love good and avoid evil, the voice of conscience can when necessary speak to [one’s] heart more specifically: do this, shun that” (Gaudium et Spes 16). However, our conscience doesn’t just come to us when we are born. We must work throughout our lives to form it through prayer, learning, and conversation.

How do I form my conscience?

It takes time to form our consciences so that we can make well-reasoned judgments about particular, real-life situations. The Church teaches that it is important to work continually on conscience formation so we can be prepared to make decisions whenever the opportunity arises. Some specific ideas to form your conscience are:

1) Begin by being open to the truth and what is right.

2) Study Sacred Scripture and the teaching of the Church.

3) Examine the facts and background information about various choices and be discerning in where we gather information.

4) Prayerfully reflect to discern the will of God (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, no. 18).

Additionally, it is important to consider how

1 Catechism of the Catholic Church (2nd ed.). Washington, DC: Libreria Editrice Vaticana–United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), 2000, no 1777

our community of faith can help us form good consciences through some of these steps:

1) Seek the prudent advice and good example of trusted leaders and others to support and enlighten our conscience.

2) Learn about the authoritative teaching of the Church.

3) Pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit to help us develop our conscience.

4) Regularly partake in an examination of conscience to hear God’s voice in your life.1

Doing the work of forming our consciences can seem daunting. Fortunately, we have many church teachings that can help us in this important task. Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship is an important resource for U.S. Catholics and helps us prayerfully reflect on how we can apply Church teaching in our civic life. “Conscience is not something that allows us to justify doing whatever we want, nor is it a mere "feeling" about what we should or should not do. Rather, conscience is the voice of God resounding in the human heart, revealing the truth to us and calling us to do what is good while shunning what is evil.”2

Here are some questions for further reflection:

1. When has my conscience guided me to “do good and avoid evil”?

2. What are some key resources I can use to form my conscience?

3. Forming conscience is a “lifelong task.” What do I do to regularly form my conscience? What more should I do?
