well, like an 11 year old girl who was nearthe brink of suicide because of how it hadharmed her self-esteem, like how Frenchhad been misdiagnosed many times as achild and teenager, and wascondescendingly dismissed because theythought she wasn’t capable ofunderstanding it.How it’s changed her life:As Ms. French told the FDA, “Yourstatistics about half-lives… kilograms, repeated rates of 2%, but all that matters tome is 2, my 2 daughters. I’ve had 3 peoplein my family die from this disease, andwithout my children, I won’t be able tocope. Five years ago, I missed the firstweek of school because I was in the ICU.Five years ago, my 2 year old child had tolearn how to start an IV. What 2 year oldshould have to do that? Three years ago, Ifirst got medication that really works. Thatmeans I’ve felt healthy less than 6% of mylife.” She asked the Director, “Have youbeen allowed to live fully for more than 6%of your life? Two weeks after mydaughter’s fifth birthday, she had to go tothe hospital because her throat was swollenshut. I woke up every morning hoping Icould walk into her bedroom and she wouldstill be alive. If you decide that this diseasedoesn’t affect enough people, I feel likeI’m still sitting in the room with that doctortelling me that I just need to get over it.”Our outlook on the future:Even though HAE has claimed manypeople’s lives and will likely claim moreyet, the prospects have never been brighterwith treatment options like Berinert,Haegerda, Cinryze, Firazyr, and othersbeing approved by the FDA.

Cheryl French is a wife, a mother, ateacher, and a sufferer of a rare and life-threatening disease known as hereditaryangioedema. But to the federal government, she’s a statistic: 1 in 50,000. The situationis a lot different from her perspective: It’sthree out of four. That’s how many peoplein her immediate family are afflicted bythis disease, two of whom are her ownchildren. 1 in 50,000 may sound like asmall number on its own, but when youcompare it to the population of our countryand consider how genetics branch outexponentially over time, it’s a dangerousgame to play by sweeping their lives andstruggles under the rug. On September 25,Ms. French went to D.C. along with manyothers to share their struggles and storieswith the FDA.What is hereditary angioedema? It’s a genetic condition that affects thebody’s response to certain stimuli, in a waysimilar to severe allergies. Commonsymptoms include intense, excruciatinglypainful swelling of different parts of thebody like the hands, feet, abdomen, face, and airway, or even some internal organs. Some of the stimuli are physical and othersare more tied into the brain. The frequency(and severity) of these attacks depends onthe individual, ranging from days, months,or over a year in-between each, and theygenerally last for several days at a time. How we’re fighting it:The disease has been known of since 1888,but largely misunderstood until the pastdecade made new research and treatmentoptions available. The Food & DrugAdministration has made strides incommunication with those who have thisdisease and those working to treat it.What the FDA is doing to help:For the first time in history, they’veencouraged patients to take a direct role inthe development of solutions to thisdisease. Ms. French had the opportunity totalk to them in person about how HAE haschanged her family’s life, how it’s claimedmany of her relatives and changed herchildren, how it’s become her goal tocontribute to understanding and eliminatingit. The FDA heard other personal stories as

Southside Teacher Addresses the FDAby Micah Blisard

One of my favorite songs is “Fireflies” by FaithHill. She sings about how a bed isn’t just a bed thatit could also be a ship on a voyage or how you cancatch Tinkerbell in a mayonnaise jar at night. Forthree minutes she sings about having a wildimagination no matter how old you are.Imagination could do some people good. I am afirm believer in imagination. I think thatimagination keeps everyone from being too seriousor too drab. I have a four year old brother and a twoyear old sister. Imagination is their whole world. Most everything in their little head is made up.Something I’ve come to realize that the key tobeing the favorite sister is to have an endless supplyof imagination in your back pocket. My most memorable memory doesn’t come fromthe family trip to the beach, Christmas at Disney, oreven from a cross-country road trip. One day whileI was off this summer I got the privilege ofbabysitting my darling little siblings.Unfortunately, it was raining and my mom didn’twant us on the roads. Luckily for me my house issurrounded by eleven acres of trees. Since it wasn’tthundering or lightning I made a call for us to gooutside and play. My siblings love getting dirty. Tothem, getting dirty is better than a trip to DisneyWorld. This particular day was different than theother times when we play outside. The trees behindour house wern’t just trees they were a portal to anunknown world full of wild things and treasure. Before we could venture into undiscovered land weneeded swords to protect us from the bad guyssince the Ninja Turtles couldn’t come with us onour adventure. Once we had our sticks that becameour sharp swords we were ready to find hiddentreasure that pirates had left behind. For hours weslayed a mean dragon, fought off pirates, and madefriends with some very nice fairies. By the end ofour adventure we were drenched from the rain thathad happened when we were fighting the pirates onthe ship’s deck and we were bone tired from flyingwith Peter Pan.By the end of the day I realized that hours andhours had passed and not once did I think abouthow childish our game really was or how this“magical” world was really just a bunch of treesand flowers that have been in our backyard forages. All I thought about is how I felt like a fiveyear old again who was having the time of my lifeall because of imagination.

College: Necessity or

Just Stressful? Blake McMeansby Savannah Lenz

Most seniors are gearing up to go to

college. They are applying and taking

tests to get in. they study and join clubs

and volunteer all to get into the school of

their choice but is it necessary kids today

stress themselves out so much to get into

a college and is it even worth it? It’s 2017

and most people haven’t even went to

college or pursued an education past the

12th grade all they did was get that high

school diploma. They contributed to a

society that only works fast food and asks

for higher minimum wage.

Most people who did that want more

from their lives but maybe they couldn’t

afford it. College is really stressful and

the fact that you have to pay 30 dollars

to even be considered for the school.

Then on top of that you have to send in

scores to different colleges and that is 12

dollars a score and then you have to pay

for housing applications and then do that

for 4-10 other school.

You also have to figure out how to pay

for the schooling and then you have to

figure out how to pay back the money

you borrow and then after college you

are expected to be ready to start a

family. So that brings the question, is it

even worth it? Statistic show that college

graduates make around 56% more than

high school graduates. This is the biggest

gap since 1973. High school graduates

also have had a 3% decrease in income.

People with college degrees also get jobs

easier. So besides the stress and anxiety it

gives our kids statistics says necessary.

So college: necessary or just stressful? It

is sadly both but the choice is still up to

you.

By Sarah Cook

On September 27, the Southside

sophomores had a small meeting with

the reality of the responsibilities that

comes with driving, drinking, and making

choices. Making the choice of driving

drunk comes with multiple consequences

and is also very dangerous. In the United

States, statistics show that every day 28

people die from car crashes that involve

and alcohol-impaired driver. In Blake

McMeans’ case, he went out drinking

with his friends at the age of 17 and

drove back home drunk, except he didn’t

make it home as expected. Blake left the

bar, hit a tree, and flipped his car 3 times,

resulting with him in a coma for four

months.

McMeans came to Southside High School

to share his story in hopes of saving

someone from making the same mistake

he did. McMeans spoke about his

condition, sharing how it took him 9 years

to speak, stand, and walk like any other

person. Blake had a full ride scholarship

to the University of Tennessee for tennis,

and had a goal of going pro in tennis. At

one point in his life, Blake was one of the

top tennis players in the nation, and that

one decision completely changed his

future. As you get older you will run into

making choices small or large, but all

Blake wants you to take home with you is

to never drink and drive, it could change

your entire life in and instant. McMeans

now tours the nation touching people’s

hearts, and hopefully saving a few people

from making his mistake.

Page 4From Our Perspective...

The NFL has a “flag protest”where many players are taking aknee when the national anthemplays. In August of 2016 ColinKaepernick protested policebrutality by sitting down duringthe anthem and then changed hisprotest by taking a knee. ManyNFL players are currentlyprotesting in the same fashion. However none of them seem tohave a particular cause. OnSeptember 22 president DonaldTrump said that the NFL ownersshould fire the players that aredisrespecting the flag. The DallasCowboys locked in arms duringthe anthem, the cowboys widereceiver Dez Bryant and runningback Ezekiel Elliott claimed thatthe team was just sending amessage to president Trump. Isthe only reason for any of theseprotests to send a message topresident Trump? Or is that whatit has turned too? Howevereveryone has the right to apeaceful protest, no matter thecause, and no matter how

disrespectful. It is highly doubtful that anyplayer will be fired for the protest. However NFL has lost millions ofTV viewers since the flag protests. Some may be fired, or at leastforced to protest another way ifthere is too much revenue loss.Which is likely to happen, nearlythirty two percent of adults saidthey are less likely to watch theNFL due to the protests.Everyone stands for the flag for adifferent reason, most everyone'sreason is out of respect. I just hopethe players remember who gavethem the freedom to kneel in thefirst place.

Somepropose instating a puppet leader, while others believe that North Koreashould be annexed be China, whilethere are also many advocates of thereunification of Korea as one nation. However, we’ve tried this before, andpeople seem overeager to forget theevents of the Korean War.There is a strong U.S. presence inSeoul and beyond, which would causemassive tensions with China if weovertook Korea directly instead of viaproxy, as was the practice of theSoviet Union with ‘satellite states’.Another possibility is that the countrywill be divided again, between U.S.-backed South Korea, (which wouldlikely have an even stronger

Southside Cruises to Homecoming Win over

Fairley

Soccer Set for TryoutsBy Brandon Arce-Orozco

After two very close

region losses to Ft. Payne

and Pell City, The Southside

Panthers collected their

first win of 2017 with a 24-

6 victory over the Fairley

Bulldogs of Memphis, TN.

Coming into the contest,

Fairley had a record of 4-1

and had only yielded 45

points in 5 games.

Southside's defense kept

the Bulldog offense

guessing all evening, as a

large homecoming crowd

were treated to a running

clinic put on by junior

tailback Kat Bothwell.

Bothwell carried the ball

17 times for 135 yards and 2

touchdowns, and Beau

McConnell added a second

quarter score to give

Southside a 21-0 second

quarter advantage.

The defense carried the

second half for the

Panthers, holding Fairley to

only 12 yards in the 3rd

quarter. Junior defensive

back Blake Habyan snagged

two key interceptions to

keep the Bulldogs in check.

The Panthers only needed a

40-yard field goal from

Nolan Johnson to add the

exclaimation mark to a

wonderful homecoming

effort. Southside (1-4) will

seek their first region victory

on October 6 as they travel to

Lamar Field to play the

highly ranked and unbeaten

Oxford Yellow Jackets. After

this trip, the Panthers will

return home for a two game

home stand as they face the

Brewer Patriots and the

Cullman Bearcats. The

season will conclude with

road games against the

Albertville Aggies and the

Glencoe Yellow Jackets.

Its that time of the year again. While football is underway,

Southside High School will begin tryouts starting in early

October. While there will be some familiar faces at tryouts,

a lot of new athletes will be attending as well. Coach Randy

Vice, the new soccer coach, decided to reach out to the

panther press to elaborate on the tryouts themselves

before they are conducted.

Brandon: “How many people are we looking at that will

tryout this year?”

Coach Vice: “We’re looking at around 38 people, including

middle schoolers. Of course, this is just a rough estimate.”

B: “What will you be looking for in the players as they

tryout ability-wise?”

CV: “We will be paying close attention to their touch, speed,

and agility. They must have basic ball control and

dribbling, as well as fine distribution. However, we will

ALSO be looking at a player’s character and overall

attitude. This is so we can make sure they can play as a

team.”

B: “Would you prefer an all-around player or one that is

only focused on one position?”

CV: “Definitely all-around. Obviously some players will be

better at offensive positions than others, and same for

defense. But I need to be able to place a player in whatever

position would be necessary at the time. If a player comes

up to me and says ‘I’m a defender’, then that raises a few

red flags for me since they have a one-track mindset.”

B: “Can you elaborate on how the tryouts themselves will

be set up?”

CV: October 2-3 will be for Varsity. (Grades 9-12) October 4-

5, will be for JV. (Middle School and most Freshman) Both

will start at 3:15 and end at 5:00. The assistant coaches and

and I, will decide professionally who makes the team based

on how the players perform. The tryouts will be split into

two categories since there is limited time for them: Fitness

and agility drills and Game Situations. The drills will be to

assess players condition and basic movement. The Game

Situations will be to test the players reactions and

awareness in real game set pieces.

B: “Last question: How do you predict the year will go?”

CV: “Well, I don’t believe in predictions. I feel like we will

need to adapt to the situations the season will give us.

However, of the people that I’ve met, I see a lot of

enthusiasm, great character, and incredible talent. At the

end of the day, I will not lose sleep if we win or lose. But I

WILL lose sleep if I have impacted someone in less than a

positive way.”

A Homecoming Perspective by Audrey Owens

This October issue is about Homecoming. I am a Senior at Southside High School. Each year wepick people to go on the stage from each grade and we pick maids to go on the field. This year Igot on the stage which was a great honor. It was so fun and exciting. The only nervous part waswalking on stage and it honestly was not even that bad… I was very shocked since I get so nervousin front of people. I was very proud of all the people that made it on the field such as Jyll Reaves,Allysa Smedley, Lauren Brewer, and Angel Lockridge. I am very proud of my Best friend AllysaSmedley for winning. She deserves it.

Homecoming Floats a Success in 2017By Madison Reavis

Hello fellow Student

Government and classmates. I

know it’s been hard to have

school spirit with the losing

streak we had for the last four

games, but we finally won a

game. It’s all good. Let’s all aim

to have some more spirit for the

rest of the year. I know signs

have been banned since the

Hokes Bluff game. We hope to

make a compromise with

administration for maybe a

return, of course with the signs

being a lot more positive. We

also aim to have theme days

carry over into basketball

season. Basketball is going to be

great this year. There’s a very

big chance we could make it to

state with the talent we have

currently. Announcements are

still a little bland, but we are

working out ways to improve

them. Seth has his food for

thoughts that leaves pretty much

all of us puzzled, but entertained.

Coach Patton has made future

suggestions like us having fake

news on Fridays and like a meme

of the week. All of that I’m taking

into consideration of course.

October we got more football

games and Halloween so another

good month up ahead. We’re a

quarter of the way done, so let’s

keep it rolling Southside.

Your president, Chad Morgan.
