Ueda Area Guide

Sugadaira Highland is known as “Davos in Japan” because its scenery is so evocative of Davos in Switzerland. The blooms of various alpine plants gracing the gentle hills are a delight to see.

The historic Bessho Hot Springs is immortalized in Heian-period writings. Its waters have low alkalinity and are famed for promoting silky smooth skin.

The traces of Ueda Castle, built by Sanada Masayuki, a military commander of the Sengoku period, can still be seen today. The castle is famous for its defense against Tokugawa’s massive army.

The 600,000 shrubs of Japanese azaleas create a magnificent blaze of blossoms in early summer. A thriving coexistence of wildlife and vegetation of the forests and the highlands can be found in Ikenotaira Marshland.

Edo-period architecture and Meiji-period architecture stand in picturesque harmony in Unno-juku. This former post station is included in the list of “100 best roads and streets of Japan” and is a designated Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings.

Catching the attention of wine lovers are the high-quality wines from this area’s wineries. From the cultivation of grapes to production and distribution, the entire operation is handled in-house.

History

Your journey has just begun! So, where are you off to first?

Utsukushigaharakogen Hotel Yamamotogoya and Yamamotogoya Furusatokan are situated at an altitude of 2,000 meters in the Utsukushigahara Highland. Both hotels offer an amazing view of the Alps and the Yatsugatake mountains, as well as the starry night sky.

Surrounded by mountains on four sides, Aoki Village is the perfect spot for paragliding. One of the most popular programs is the tandem flight with an instructor. *For your peace of mind, purchase of travel insurance covering paragliding is encouraged.

Tazawa Hot Spring and Kutsukake Hot Spring, which opened in the late Asuka period and the Heian period, respectively, are nestled in a lush natural environment.

Tachiakane soba is a brand of soba unique to Aoki Village. These noodles, which are distinguished by their pleasant scent and hint of sweetness, are served in various restaurants throughout the village.

Wadajuku Honjin was an inn for feudal lords and other nobility during the Edo period. Its living quarters still stand, making Wadajuku Honjin one of the largest remaining honjins.

Two-hundred heads of dairy cattle roam free in the beautiful natural environment 1,400 meters above sea level. Visitors can not only purchase the various dairy products produced at Nagato Ranch Dairy Farm, but also try their hand at making butter and other milky goodies.
