“There’s Just Something About That Name”

Philippians 2:10“that at the name of Jesus every

knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and

of those under the earth,”


Introduction:1. I want you to take just a few seconds, close

your eyes and think about this question;

“What comes to your mind when here the name of Jesus?”

2. Then consider this -

1. Have you been hanging around church longer than you can remember?

2. Do you know every Bible story and children’s worship song by heart?

3. Do you watch baptisms with one eye while you read the church bulletin with the other?


4. “Are we so used to being in the church that none of it seems special anymore?”

5. Are we, Are you , am I too familiar with Jesus, do we take Him for granted?


7. Familiarity can be dangerous - A. I can recall the many times I have cringed

at the way I saw and/or the way others address the boss, the teacher, an adult, and other examples to numerous to name, that held some place of importance and deserved respect because they were too familiar with that individual.


B. Consider this passage and the words that are spoken:

• Mark 1:40 – 41…..A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”


• This leper came knowing the great power of Jesus and what He can do, he has seen Jesus heal others.

• This leper comes to Him with no expectations.• No demands • You can see the respect that flows through his

approach. “…If you are willing, you can make me clean.”


I have found often myself speaking to Him in the imperative when I pray:

• “Lord, help me.”• “Lord, make this right.”• “Lord, forgive me.”• As I compare my DEMANDS through this leper’s

approach, his request, they suddenly sound more like commands to me than a request.

• I have wondered how they feel to Jesus?


• These words come from years of familiarity with Jesus.

• Familiarity is supposed to be a good thing. It should feel like a great shirt that you would never get rid of, even though it has holes in it and the color faded about a thousand washes ago.

• I’ve known Him since childhood. But the problem begins when my reliance upon Him degenerates to a degree of expectation rather than a blessing.


• Our beginning relationship with Him is something NEW.

• In a new relationship you don’t know what to expect. So, everything comes as a request. Would you like to go to a concert?

• “Can we have a cup of coffee?” • “Will you talk a walk with me?” • The sense that your new friend exists as an

autonomous creature sits strong with you.


• In time, we tend to allow this “newness” to wear off and, without realizing it, we become obligatory in our approach, perhaps even forgetting who we are talking to.

• A growing relationship can grind to a standstill when you become too familiar. And it does in many examples of relationships

• People like being new. They want to receive an invitation, not a list of requirements.


• The Gospels tell stories that show this dynamic of too being too familiar between Jesus and His disciples.

• He would say something and their response, though innocent, came across as rude, abrasive, and commanding.

• Jesus told them once that He would be persecuted soon and then die. Peter responded, “Not if I can help it.” To which Jesus snapped back, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." OUCH!

• MATTHEW 16:23


• Jesus understood where Peter’s words had come from.

• He knew that Peter loved Him deeply. He heard the fear and dependence in what Peter had said.

• So, why did He give such a sharp reply?• Maybe He said it to dislodge Peter out of over-

familiarity with Him. Of course, Peter would never have expected the Lord to call him an adversary. Jesus was showing Peter by his command how Peter had sounded to Him.


• That’s why this story of the leper is so sweet because this leper comes to Him with no expectations, no demands.

• He knows Jesus has the ability to chase away this disease forever, but he knows better than to demand a cure.

• You can see the great respect that flows through his approach to the MASTER.


I know Jesus knows my heart, but I also I know

I’ve been rude. I truly want to treat Him with the newness He

deserves, with the newness of when I first realized Who and what He is about and means to me.

I want to speak in requests and not imperatives.


• How about you – have you stopped long enough to hear how you address the Lord in your prayers?

• How you use His name? • Maybe you have become overly-familiar with

Him?• Maybe His Name doesn’t Mean so Much any

More?


• I’m not saying you/we should not grow a loving relationship with Christ and draw as close to Him as you/we possibly can.

• I’m asking if His name still breaths power into you. • Do you honestly celebrate when you watch an

unbeliever find the grace that God provides through that Name?

• Are you broken hearted over those who don’t know our Lord – His Name?


C. While the Hebrew writer proclaims that we can boldly come before the throne he is referring to our not being afraid to come, timid in coming, fear in coming to Christ for He wants to do for us that which He can. But our approach to Him is in a respectful, reverent, thankful and prayerful manner.

“ Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:12

How Important Is His Name?

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,” Philippians 2:9

• “And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.”

COLOSSIANS 1:18


•"But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ,the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name."

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is

no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.“

Acts 4:12

LET HIS NAME REMAIN NEW TO YOU
