Product: ThermaCote® Air Barrier Coating

Project Summary: Architectural Testing, Inc. was contracted by ThermaCote, Inc. to evaluate

the air permeance of their ThermaCote® air barrier coating. The product description, test

procedure and test results are reported herein. The average results from testing are presented in

the chart below.

ASTM E 2178 - Air Permeance

Parameter Test Results

Calculated Air Permeance at 25 Pa 0.000004 L/Pa·m2·s

Calculated Air Permeance at 50 Pa 0.000004 L/Pa·m2·s

Calculated Air Permeance at 75 Pa 0.000005 L/Pa·m2·s

Calculated Air Permeance at 100 Pa 0.000005 L/Pa·m2·s

Calculated Air Permeance at 150 Pa 0.000006 L/Pa·m2·s

Calculated Air Permeance at 300 Pa 0.000006 L/Pa·m2·s

Test Method: The test specimens were evaluated in conformance with the following method

without deviation. ASTM E 2178-03, Standard Test Method for Air Permeance of Building Materials.

Product Description: ThermaCote provided to Architectural Testing five nominal 48" x 48" x

1/2" (122 cm x 122 cm x 1.3 cm) ThermaCote® air barrier coated Dens-glass sections and one

nominal 48" x 48" x 1/2" (122 cm x 122 cm x 1.3 cm) uncoated Dens-glass section. The

ThermaCote® air barrier was applied at a 40 mil wet thickness and dried to a 30 to 35 mil dry

thickness. It is white in color and has a nominal basis weight of 5 lbs/gal. The sections were

tested as-received with the exception of cutting the sections to 42.5" x 42.5" (108 cm x 108 cm).

Test Procedure and Test Results: The results are reported in the following tables. All

specimen conditioning and test conditions were at standard laboratory conditions.

ASTM E 2178 - Air Permeance

Each test specimen was placed coating side up (exterior) on top of the test chamber (ICN

004933) and then sealed to the test chamber utilizing duct tape and 4 mil thick polyethylene

sheeting. The resulting test area was 1 meter x 1 meter (39.3" x 39.3").

The test specimen was then tested at preset air pressures ranging from 25 Pa to 300 Pa. Upon

completion of the cycle, the polyethylene sheet was sliced and peeled away from the test

specimen's surface. The test specimen was tested again at preset air pressures ranging from 25

Pa to 300 Pa. Refer to the photos in Appendix A. The actual pressure and flow values are

presented in Appendix B, and the air permeance graph appears in Appendix C.

Error Analysis: In compliance with Section 9.4 an error analysis shall be performed that includes an examination

of the sources of error, an evaluation of systematic errors and propagation of error, and the resulting value of error

on air flow values through the material tested. Regression analysis yielded a lower correlation than the method

allows. The primary contributing factor is believed to be the test specimens themselves. The substrate and the

coating application method may result in samples which are non-homogenous.
