Taking a small volume filling fraction of CNT’s into account, the effective nanotube thermal conductivity could be 2 310 2 W/m K, which is smaller than the thermal conductivity of diamond and in-plane graphite by a factor of 9 and 7.5, respectively. INTRODUCTION A carbon nanotube ~CNT! is a type of very attractive ma- terial for many unique properties because of its nanometer size tubular structure. Extremely high thermal conductivity is theoretically predicted for CNT’s, due to large phonon mean free path in strong carbon sp 2 bond network of CNT walls. 1 Che et al. 2 used equilibrium molecular dynamics to simulate the thermal conductivity of single-walled carbon nanotube ~SWNT’s! and suggested that it is dependent on the concen- tration of vacancies and defects in the CNT’s. Theoretical value of it approaches 2980 W/m K along the tube axis, which is even higher than that of good conventional thermal conductors, such as diamond. So far, some experimental results of thermal conductivity for single-walled and multiwalled carbon nanotubes ~MWNT’s! have been reported. 3–7 However the values devi- ate each other very largely, from 20 to 3000 W/m K. The measurement techniques include comparative method 3 and 3 v method. 8 Although these studies provide considerable knowledge of heat transport along CNT’s, some problems still need clarifying. First, previously measured thermal con- ductivity of bulk CNT’s may not reflect intrinsic CNT ther- mal conductivity due to the effect of volume filling fraction. Secondly, for a steady-state method, radiative heat loss could lead to an uncertainty of determining the thermal conductiv- ity. Finally, in practical CNT electronic applications, such as CNT based transistors, photodetectors, bio/chemical sensors etc., CNT length dependence of thermal conductivity will be considered as one of a few key factors in design. However, the relevant results have not been reported yet. In this paper, we present the thermal conductivity of MWNT films measured by a pulsed photothermal reflectance ~PPR! technique. In this noncontact technique, sample prepa- ration is relatively simple. Most importantly, one can treat the heat conduction problem as one dimensional and heat generation as surface heating. 9 Moreover, heat loss can be neglected due to the short time ~;400 ms! of the measure- ment. II. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Groove structures are chemically etched on high resistiv- ity silicon ~100! substrates. The depth and width of the struc- ture are 10–50 mm and 3–5 mm, respectively. Nickel thin films with thickness ranging from 0.5 to 100 nm are selec- tively deposited on the groove structured silicon substrates. The Ni films in the groove structures serve as catalyst for growing CNT’s in CH 4 1H 2 1N 2 microwave plasma. Sub- strate temperature, reactant gas flow ratio of H 2 :CH 4 :N 2 , microwave power, deposition pressure, and deposition time are 720°C, 200:20:10 sccm, 1300 W, 35 Torr, and 10 min, respectively. The length of the MWNT’s ranges from 10 to 50 mm and the diameter is from 40 to 100 nm. To enhance heat absorption in our PPR measurement, 1.2-mm thick gold foil is closely attached to the top of the CNT films. Procedure of the sample preparation is shown in Fig. 1. Figure 2 shows the setup of our PPR measurement sys- tem. During the measurement, the gold foil is struck by a Nd:YAG laser pulse with a pulse width @full width at half maximum ~FWHM!# of 8 ns, spot size of 3 mm, pulse energy of 30.3 mJ, and frequency of 10 Hz. Immediately after the laser pulse striking, the sample surface temperature rises sharply and then drops to room temperature. Estimated sur- face temperature excursion of about 31 K is about 10% of the measuring temperature. The temperature decay time is governed by thermal conduction properties of the CNT film underneath the gold foil. A focused continuous He-Ne laser is reflected from the gold foil surface, probing the light re- flection variation of the gold foils. Since the reflectivity is very sensitive to the surface temperature, 10 by inverting the obtained signal, a temperature excursion profile can be ob- tained. The system was calibrated by measuring the thermal conductivity of silicon dioxide film. III. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION We use a three-layer model to simulate heat transport in Au/CNT’s/Si structure. For a detailed description about the modeling, refer to previous papers. 11,12 To minimize the ef- fect of thermal transport through intertube airspace, the ef- fective thermal conductivity is deduced from the difference in the temperature profiles of Au/CNT’s/Si and Au/airgap/Si. Figure 3 shows the normalized surface temperature pro- files for location A ‘‘Au/airgap/Si’’ and location B ‘‘Au/ CNT’s/Si,’’respectively. I. INTRODUCTION

A carbon nanotube~CNT! is a type of very attractive material for many unique properties because of its nanomsize tubular structure. Extremely high thermal conductivitytheoretically predicted for CNT’s, due to large phonon mefree path in strong carbonsp2 bond network of CNT walls.1

Cheet al.2 used equilibrium molecular dynamics to simulathe thermal conductivity of single-walled carbon nanotu~SWNT’s! and suggested that it is dependent on the conctration of vacancies and defects in the CNT’s. Theoretivalue of it approaches 2980 W/m K along the tube axwhich is even higher than that of good conventional thermconductors, such as diamond.

So far, some experimental results of thermal conductivfor single-walled and multiwalled carbon nanotub~MWNT’s! have been reported.3–7 However the values deviate each other very largely, from 20 to 3000 W/m K. Tmeasurement techniques include comparative method3 and 3v method.8 Although these studies provide considerabknowledge of heat transport along CNT’s, some problestill need clarifying. First, previously measured thermal coductivity of bulk CNT’s may not reflect intrinsic CNT thermal conductivity due to the effect of volume filling fractionSecondly, for a steady-state method, radiative heat loss clead to an uncertainty of determining the thermal conducity. Finally, in practical CNT electronic applications, suchCNT based transistors, photodetectors, bio/chemical senetc., CNT length dependence of thermal conductivity willconsidered as one of a few key factors in design. Howethe relevant results have not been reported yet.

In this paper, we present the thermal conductivityMWNT films measured by a pulsed photothermal reflecta~PPR! technique. In this noncontact technique, sample preration is relatively simple. ture are 10–50mm and 3–5 mm, respectively. Figure 2 shows the setup of our PPR measurementtem. During the measurement, the gold foil is struck byNd:YAG laser pulse with a pulse width@full width at halfmaximum~FWHM!# of 8 ns, spot size of 3 mm, pulse energof 30.3 mJ, and frequency of 10 Hz. Immediately after thlaser pulse striking, the sample surface temperature rsharply and then drops to room temperature. Estimatedface temperature excursion of about 31 K is about 10%the measuring temperature. The temperature decay timgoverned by thermal conduction properties of the CNT fiunderneath the gold foil. A focused continuous He-Ne lais reflected from the gold foil surface, probing the light rflection variation of the gold foils. Since the reflectivityvery sensitive to the surface temperature,10 by inverting theobtained signal, a temperature excursion profile can betained. The system was calibrated by measuring the therconductivity of silicon dioxide film.

III. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

We use a three-layer model to simulate heat transporAu/CNT’s/Si structure. For a detailed description about tmodeling, refer to previous papers.11,12 To minimize the ef-fect of thermal transport through intertube airspace, thefective thermal conductivity is deduced from the differenin the temperature profiles of Au/CNT’s/Si and Au/airgap/S

Figure 3 shows the normalized surface temperature pfiles for location A ‘‘Au/airgap/Si’’ and location B ‘‘Au/CNT’s/Si,’’ respectively. To obtain the thermal conductiviof CNT’s, the temperature profile is fitted using a three-lay

In order to fit the temperature excursion profile, Eq.~1! isinversely Laplace transformed into time domain using Stfest numerical method.14 The bulk density of 1.933104 kg/m3 and specific heat of 129 J/kg K for Au are usin the fitting.15 The thermal conductivity for silicon substrais taken as 148 W/m K.13 Fitting parameters are the thermconductivities of Au foil and CNT films, and the thermdiffusivity of the CNT films. One can see that the simulatcurves fit the measured temperature profiles reasonablyfor 40-mm thick airgap@Fig. 4~a!# and CNT film,@Fig. 4~b!#.The average fitted thermal conductivity of the CNT filmabout 15 W/m K. We have measured CNT films with diffeent thickness from 10 to 50mm, and the fitted values arlisted in Table I. It is found that the thermal conductivity fothe four CNT films ranged from 12 to 17 W/m K. The vari

tion range of the fitted thermal conductivity depends onsignal to noise ratio. One can see that the thermal conducity does not show a CNT film thickness dependence. In otwords, it is independent of the length of CNT’s. The fittethermal conductivity for airgap is around 0.0264 W/mconsistent with the literature value of 0.026 W/m K. It is alnoticed that the average thermal conductivity of Au foilabout 260 W/m K, only about 80% of Au bulk valueHartmann16 have confirmed that thermal conductivity of Afilm is strongly dependent on the film thickness due toinfluence of surface and grain boundary scattering. In adtion, voids and microcracks within the gold foil may alsreduce thermal conductivity efficiently.17

Contact thermal resistance between the gold foil aCNT’s does not affect our CNT thermal conductivity vemuch. With our CNT’s length 10–50mm and CNT thermalconductivity of 12–17 W/m K, the sample thermal resistancould be 0.8– 2.931026 m2 K/W, which is contributed byboth CNT thermal resistance and the contact thermal retance. Figure 5 shows how the thermal resistance variesfunction of the thickness of CNT films. A contact thermresistance of 2.231028 m2 K/W is obtained by extrapolatingthe nice linear fitting to zero film thickness and it is onetwo orders of magnitude smaller than the CNT thermalsistance. Therefore the contact thermal resistance can bnored. In addition, the boundary thermal resistance cauby acoustic mismatch is even one order of magnitude sma

than the obtained contact thermal resistance.18 Thus, contri-bution from acoustic mismatch is negligible as well.

Heat loss in the measurement also does not affectobtained thermal conductivity. First, it has been found thin transient thermal conductivity measurement by a flatechnique, the heat loss is noticeable when the temperadecay time is more than 30 ms or 5 s,12,19respectively. In ourmeasurement, the temperature rise is 20–30 K aboveenvironment temperature~room temperature! and the tem-perature excursion duration is only;400 ms. By comparingour experimental conditions with those used in flatechnique,12,19 we suggest that the radiative heat loss in omeasurement is not significant. Second, using the three lmodel described in the text, the surface temperature of gfoil T* (s) with heat loss will be

Sincehr /hc;0.02, the radiative heat loss should be musmaller than the convective heat loss. Thus, radiative hloss can be also neglected.

The obtained thermal conductivity of CNT films is not ahigh as those expected values, as mentioned in the introtion. Let us examine the effect of intertube airspace, whichhighly resistive to heat conduction. A thermal conductanmodel is shown in Fig. 6. The total thermal conductancethe CNT films is contributed from the effective thermal coductance of CNT’s and the airgap, i.e.,

where K tube* is the effective thermal conductivity for thCNT’s, K tube is the fitted thermal conductivity for the CNTfilm, Kair is the thermal conductivity for air.d is the CNTvolume filling fraction andd is the thickness of the tube filmor airgap. Through weighing the groove-structured sambefore and after CNT’s growth and assuming the mass dsity of MWNT r;1.34 g/cm3, the value ofd is determinedto be about 7–8 % for the four samples. By substitutingaverage values ofK tube andKair into Eq. ~6!, we haveK tube*523102 W/m K.

To have a better understanding of the thermal transpoCNT’s, other fitting parameters shown in Table I should

addressed here. One can see that the thermal diffusivitya isdiverging with the thickness of the tube films. Using trelation a;K* /rC and using the mass density of MWNr;1.34 g/cm3, the specific heatC of the MWNT’s can becalculated out around 1 – 73103 J/kg K. This is larger thanthe published value of 470 J/kg K.5 Benedict et al.20 pre-dicted that the specific heat could depend on the diameteCNT’s. Phonon dominant specific heat is directly relatwith the phonon density of state~PDOS!. Small diameterCNT’s have large strain due to their large curvatures in coparison with large diameter CNT’s. This particular strainfect is thought to be the reason for the differences inPDOS, which will further affect the specific heat. Intereingly, our MWNT diameters distribute from 40 to 100 nmindeed larger than those CNT’s used in the experiment oet al.,5 where the diameters were from 20 to 40 nm.

Electrical conductivitys of the same tube films is detemined to be 1.6– 5310V21 cm21. Using the WiedemannFranz law,21 the ratio ofK/sT (T5300 K) for our sample isaround 1 – 431024 (V/K) 2, is the electrical of the CNTsamples, which is three or four orders of magnitude larthan the free-electron Lorenz number of 2.31028 (V/K) 2. Therefore, we suggest that the thermal coductivity of MWNT’s is dominantly contributed by phononsor K;Cv l , wherev is the characteristic sound velocity foCNT’s and l is the phonon mean free path. WithK tube*5200 W/m K andv5104 m/s,7 we havel ;20 nanometerswhich is smaller than that calculated by Kimet al.6 For ourMWNT’s, due to the large length of our tube samples~10–50mm!, boundary scattering could not be the main reasonreduce the phonon mean free path. Intergraphene layerintertube coupling as well as the defects scattering are mlikely to reduce the phonon mean free path.1,2,6This could bethe reason why our measuredK tube* is much smaller than theexpected value.

Maruyama22 proposed that thermal conductivity of CNTmay converge when the tube length is much longer thanphonon mean free path. As was confirmed by Che’s2 simu-

lation, if the CNT length is larger than 15 nm, theoreticthermal conductivity converges to a value of 2980 W/m K.our case, the length of MWNT’s ranges from 10 to 50mm,much far beyond the phonon mean free path of 20 nTherefore, the thermal conductivity should not depend onCNT length for our CNT films. This expectation is confirmeby our measurement, as shown in Table I.

Using equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations with accurate carbon potential, Berber1 pre-dicted the thermal conductivity of~10,10! SWNT of K;6600 W/m K at room temperature. In contrasMaruyama22 obtained the thermal conductivity of~5,5!SWNT of K;600 W/m K at room temperature using phatom technique, ten times smaller than Berber’s results. Ket al.6 through measuring a microfabricated suspendedvice, determined the thermal conductivity of 3000 W m K fa single MWNT. However, Honeet al.3 measured the thermal conductivity of crystalline ropes of SWNT’s and obtained a value of 35 W/m K at room temperature, in the saorder of magnitude as the value observed by Yiet al.5 for thebundles of MWNT’s. One year later, the former authorsported a value of 200 W/m K for magnetically aligneSWNT film.4 From above, we can see that for a single tueither single-walled or multiwalled, the thermal conductiviis from 600 to 6000 W/m K, significantly higher than thvalues of 15–200 W/m K for bulk CNT samples, includinCNT films, CNT ropes, and an aligned CNT array. It shoube pointed out that for isolated single CNT involved mesurements, heat loss to its surrounding may affect the aracy of measurement, overestimating its thermal conducity. In contrast, for bulk CNT samples, heat loss to intergaps among the tubes could be much smaller than isolsingle CNT due to very high CNT number density and vesmall air gaps among them. The small thermal conductivfor bulk CNT samples may also result from intertubcoupling1,2,6 and high density of defects which efficientlscatter the flow of phonons in CNT’s.5 Further investigationis needed to clarify these issues.

IV. CONCLUSIONS

We have measured the thermal conductivity of MWNfilms with film thickness or CNT length from 10 to 50mm.
