What is Thermography?

Water and composite materials have different thermal properties. When out of thermal balance (equilibrium), after a heating or cooling process, a temperature difference is observed between water and composite. An infrared camera enables the temperature distribution on the inspection surface to be observed.

Advantages of Thermography

It shows a visual picture so temperatures over a large area can be compared

It is capable of catching moving targets in real time

It is able to find deteriorating (i.e. at higher temperature) components prior to their failure

It can be used to measure or observe in areas inaccessible or hazardous for other methods

It is a non-destructive test method

It can be used to find defects in shafts and other metal parts -53,8°C

Other examples of Thermography

Door area heaters and heated blankets

Detecting moisture in Landing gear doors and Thrust Reversers

Identifying electrical components or wiring that are “powered”

Identifying “hot spots” in electrical components

Overheated or bypassing hydraulic components

Dectecting moister in flaps (see picture)

Disadvantages:

- Acquisition of the correct infrared camera

- All users needs to have the correct education / training

- Every year: calibration of the camera

- No experience

Themselves or outsourcing?

Outsourcing:

Advantages:

- No charges for the acquisition of the camera, education and calibration of camera
