These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to reconnect and recalibrate, or sharing something of broader importance and value. This one is a combination of all three. For us, the state of Federal politics, as vacuous as it may seem, provides us a huge opportunity to rally around a common purpose at the moment. And there’s actually a lot of profoundly encouraging things happening, both here and around the world. This photo is from the On My Agenda campaign in the lead up to the G20 last November, and the quote is a great summary of how we try to think about our work. 1

These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re:planning for something big, needing to reconnect and recalibrate, or sharing something of broader importance and value.

Purpose of these catch ups:Build a common understanding of the increased role that the Local Coordinator program will play and why/how it will function;Outline the climate campaign plan (including Road to Paris) and ways for you all to engage; andDefine a better understanding around Acts of Leadership and work on making them more impactful.

As well as:

Continue to better understand the needs of Climate Leaders;Strengthen relationships across the program; Develop and facilitate better connections between Climate Leaders; andInspire other Climate Leaders to get more involved.

Reasons for starting the Local Coordinator program:

• We really want to be able to provide personal and regular support to all Climate Leaders that need it. This level of support is the best way to enable Climate Leaders to undertake actions that align with their personal circumstances, interests and community.

• We don’t have the capacity to do this effectively as a 2 person team.• 2015 is a massive year for climate change progress – there is much to do and we

don’t want to miss opportunities.

We wanted to acknowledge the local coordinators and thank them immensely for taking up this important role and for their commitment and willingness to take on more responsibility.

We want to say a massive congratulations at this juncture having analysed the statisticsup until the end of last year.

It’s important to remember you’re part of a large community of people working at the highest level on climate change in various ways.

7

Page 8: These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either ...€¦ · These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to

These statistics are a tally of the work from July‐December 2014 (as reported in Jul‐Sep and Oct‐Dec report backs).

The media placements included some great targeted work over summer with the Connecting the Dots campaign.

There were also 737 ‘other’ Acts of Leadership that we feel are significant contributions that have been reported. These include things like:

• being part of divestment days• participating in a range of campaigns • organising industry specific conferences and events• Working on internal workplace policy• Writing kids books• Starting organisations eg Climate for Change

These statistics are the overall total from 2006‐Dec 2014.

1 in 50 Australians has now seen a Climate Reality presentation.

We really want to thank you for being part of this huge effort.

9

Page 10: These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either ...€¦ · These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to

These are statistics based only on what you tell us as part of your report backs, and an educated guess suggests that those figures are only about half of the work being done.

It’s important to report back:• So others know what you’re up to;• To allow us to develop stories and share experiences to inspire others; and• For us to attract resources to be able to support you better.

We’ve now moved to reporting back every 6 months (rather than every 3 months) and we can provide you a template diary to log as you go if that makes it easier (http://www.climatereality.org.au/project‐resources.html)

You can also log presentations on the US portal (http://presenters.climaterealityproject.org/presenter_tools/dashboard) if wanting to promote them – and a new portal is currently in development. Our preference is for you to feed back your activities through our report back surveys (one coming up soon for the Jan – June 2015 period).

Victoria McKenzie McHarg has provided an update on ACF’s climate campaign including a current political analysis.

A recording of the catch ups phone call (from May 13, 2015) is available here, including this campaign update: http://www.climatereality.org.au/the‐experts.html

On top of the work you’re all doing building climate literacy, engagement on the issue and support, we have a few programs coming up for those interested in getting more involved.

We also want to share some research on attitudes to climate change, and a run through what the program has on offer in terms of support.

12

Page 13: These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either ...€¦ · These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to

For those engaging, or wanting to engage more actively in the politics, now is a key time to get a clear sense of what various parties emissions reduction targets are, in the lead up to the Paris negotiations.

During May we held a number of Local Advocacy Days, in the lead up to the PM’s taskforce announcing the government’s targets, to put pressure on both Liberal and ALP MPs asking them about their long term plan on climate change.

To help ramp up efforts for bipartisan support on targets (both now and in the coming months on the road to and beyond the Paris negotiations), we’ve come up with a toolkit with resources and tips for meeting with your MP:

http://www.climatereality.org.au/project‐resources.html (under Advocacy Tips).

One of the things we’re constantly asked is how to help get people involved. One of the lighter touch entry points will be Live Earth, where we want to amass and build a huge groundswell of public support illustrating that even though our government is inadequate, that people here.

The event comes with two parts: a concert will be held in several key cities around the world, and it aims to draw attention to a global petition. The event date looks to be September 19.

We’ll be sending you more information soon, but some of ways to engage include:• Promoting signing the petition;• Using it as an opportunity to host a viewing party and get friends/colleagues together

to talk about what’s needed ahead of Paris and the next Federal Election from Australia;

For those that sign the petition, we’ll be keeping them abreast of major decisions and opportunities to engage all the way up the next federal election and beyond.http://liveearth.org/

14

Page 15: These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either ...€¦ · These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to

This year, mobilising public support ahead of Paris and the Election next year will be paramount in moving ahead our national response to climate change.

Climate literacy in Australia is still really low, and we’ve seen that there’s a direct correlation between literacy and taking action.

15

Page 16: These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either ...€¦ · These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to

We wanted to share this exciting piece of social research on attitudes to climate change – using the biggest sample size in Australia. The good news is that 65% of Australians fall in to the categories of Concerned or Alarmed.

Interesting trends:1. No group was particularly knowledgeable about climate change – even the

ALARMED group averaged less than 60% correct responses.2. No group showed trust in climate change authorities – the ALARMED group was

ambivalent on the issue – part of our job could be to help build trust in those authorities.

3. No group held robust attitudes towards clean sources of energy – all groups were slightly in favour, but the difference between DISMISSIVES at one end and the ALARMED at the other, was relatively small.

4. No group held robust attitudes towards nuclear

The term ‘Acts of Leadership’ can be a constant source of confusion that lends itself to a range of interpretations.

Acts of Leadership have changed a lot over time to be much more than delivering the slideshow. We’re not too pedantic about the definition and don’t want you to get too hung up on it.

We’re at that juncture where some people have become comfortable with what they’re doing and looking to specialise and we want to evolve with those changes.

Hopefully with some of the information shared today about the political and social landscape, it gives you something to consider in deciding how to spend your time.

17

Page 18: These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either ...€¦ · These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to

This is a framework with three broad categories that we think of in terms of Acts of Leadership, starting from the outcome first.

Examples of Acts of Leadership

In the six months following the training, there were 737 reported ‘Other’ Acts of Leadership. Here are just a few examples from the last few years:

• Narelle Webber is the Program Director at International Student Volunteers and has incorporated climate change into the inductions that each volunteer does before they go away, learning about the effects of climate change in the country where they’ll be volunteering.

• Nigel Bell and Susanne Rix (Blue Mountains) are working with the General Manager of the Rural Fire Service to hold a public forum to discuss increasing fire danger and how to adapt, survive and build resilience.

• Terry White has been working with Local Governments and Rotary clubs to apply for funding from the CEFC to establish a ‘Solar panels for pensioners’ program that will allow pensioners to pay access solar via a pay as you go scheme.

• Guy Abrahams founded the organisation Climarte, which uses the power of the arts to inform, engage and inspire action on climate change. They’ve just kicked off their festival called Art+Climate=Change, on now until 17 May.

18

Page 19: These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either ...€¦ · These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to

• Kim Hudson, in 2007, started one of the first community bulk purchases of solar• Gerard Siero moved a motion to support climate change with the Anglican Church,

which lead to them supporting a carbon price and divesting• Andy Best worked with the Australian Education Union to put climate change on their

national agenda• A number of SA Climate Leaders came together to form South Australians for Climate

Action, a community group dedicated to amplifying the voices of South Australians concerned about climate change.

• A number of Climate Leaders were involved in organising the Doctors for the Environment annual conference, raising awareness about the link between health and climate change. Claire Felmingham ran the Melbourne Marathon and donated the funds raised to DEA.

• Sarah Beebe is writing children’s books on the impact that climate change has on wildlife

• A number of Climate Leaders have organised Climate Rallies and Divestment Days in their cities and towns – contributing to wider national and international campaigns

This can be a good framework to use when thinking about your work. There’s a lot of variations but this comes from Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

It’s useful to help you think about where you’re able to influence change.

Floods, hurricanes, etc. fall into your circle of concern but it’s easy to be overwhelmed by their enormity.Your circle of influence includes your work, your friends, your MP… Your circle of influence grows as you access it.

Page 21: These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either ...€¦ · These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to

The slideshow is one of our largest assets and largest liabilities. While we’re really keen for you to think about your Acts of Leadership broadly, the slideshow does continue to be a really good communication tool in terms of presentations, as well as a source of information that you can use in different ways.

The next few slides examine the structure of the slideshow, and things to think about in terms of delivery and application.

20

Page 22: These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either ...€¦ · These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to

This slide refers to the Australian slides (available here: http://www.climatereality.org.au/slideshow.html)

The major change in this slideshow is the proportion of the problem to solution, responding to some consistent feedback we’re getting across the board. Of course this changes from audience to audience, but this is a wholesale shift that’s been occurring over time, to spend more time speaking about opportunities and solutions and significantly less on ‘the bad news’.

You've effectively got two slideshows now – one you received at a training you've gone to and then this one. You’re free to use and combine slides as you see fit. Everyone will have ones they’re most comfortable with.

Essentially, the slideshow tells a story and we’ve used a story structure (challenge, choice, outcome) that has been used most famously in Obama’s inaugural election campaign and developed by Marshall Ganz of Harvard University and founder of the New Organising Institute in the US..

21

Page 23: These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either ...€¦ · These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to

Public narrative is a structure you can use when telling the story of your slideshow.

There are three parts of that story: self, us and now.

Learn more here:http://archive.neworganizing.com/toolbox/training/story‐of‐self/ http://archive.neworganizing.com/toolbox/training/story‐of‐us‐and‐now/

The way the slideshow has been put together uses both rational arguments and emotional arguments, appealing to ‘the head and the heart’.

There are substantial bodies of research (and you can draw on your own experiences here), that decisions made about climate change aren’t always rational ones.

23

Page 25: These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either ...€¦ · These catch ups are always scheduled at key times, either when we’re: planning for something big, needing to

One of the things we wanted people to think about more expansively is the application of the slideshow.

The slideshow itself is a story, and told well it should be a compelling call to act. But it doesn’t have to be delivered in that traditional way to be impactful.

You can use the information in the slideshow to tell the story in a lot of different ways. It can be part of a conversation. It can be used to tell a story over time through blog posts or articles.

For example:Felix Riebl wrote a song about climate change to communicate the story after being trained: https://youtu.be/gaROrDZE19kThe ACF social media team made a really successful infographic using statistics from the slideshow.
