WHY DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?
OKAY, LET’S START WITH A BIT OF HISTORY
For decades Russia has been perceived by rest of the world as a country with bloody leaders, richest cultural heritage, leadership in space development and military potential. But Russian domestic automotive market has never been outstanding neither in terms of engineering nor in terms of design.
Russia is still perceived by rest of the world as a country where bears are met on the streets, people drink vodka and drive Ladas so recklessly that dash-cam videos from russian roads get millions of views on YouTube.
We might have lost the advantage on some fields, and vodka with bears and Ladas still happen with us. But what Russia has always had are the craftsmen and the engineers. And these people finally got their hands and fantasy on cars. In the last 10-15 years a new generation of automotive enthusiasts developed a wide range of automotive subcultures worth telling about.
NOW
What should be mentioned first is the domestic market. Once been copied from Fiats and Impalas these cars now get their new life in hands of enthusiasts.
DOMESTIC MARKET
This is where the resto culture gets its roots. These cars also serve as a low-budget entrance point to drift and time-attack movement.Here young engineers try their first swaps and modifications.
STANCESCENEVisitors and judges of European stance contests already had a chance to meet few ultimate projects of Russian stance scene.
The truth is - stance movement in Russia had time to grow up and, despite the roads quality, got mighty and independent. Every summer there are at least twelve big stance events in the central part of the country.
CAR CLUBS
The next thing getting popular in Russia is a car club meetings. For example VW and Audi festival is held for the jubilee 10th time this summer.
Similar events are also held by NISMO Club Russia, and once a year there is a global JDM bash going on where visitors get a chance to see hundreds of VIP, drift, stance and other custom project Japan imports.
AMERICAN CLASSICS
Being quite far from the USA, we didn’t get American import in the same proportions as the JDM or the EDM, but the remaining cars are being sought after and carefully restored by collectors.
This leads to an increasing amount of muscle car and hot-rod oriented garages and quite authentic exhibitions of all-american classic stuff along with the cars.
CLASSICCARSThe most exclusive and rare examples of automotive history can be met on Russian streets too. But compared to any other cars, these oldtimers come out of their garages only for special occasions.
Mostly, they can be seen on various luxury events like the L.U.C Chopard Classic Weekend Rally, Bosch Moskau Klassik rally, etc. However, some of them are still weekend-driven and even take part in classic car track-days and competitions.
TIME ATTACK
Many years after the world-known success of Soviet autosport Russiais back in the game.
Today we have several FIA-sanctioned motorsports curcuits and a growing number of local racetracks, which makes it possible for the races of MitJet, Legends, RHHCC, WTCC, MaxPowerCars, DTM, F1 and other series to happen nearly every weekend.
DRIFT
This is where things get hectic. Russia, like many other countries, is affected by the rubber burning syndrome.
This year, forty pilots entered the first lap of Russian Drift Series in Moscow. And it is only a quarter of those, able to compete with serious budgets and 500+ horsepower. Apart of it, thousands of cars are being built and hundreds of local events are held yearly in this discipline over the country.
DRAG
It was definitely drag racing, that started a new era for Russian autosport when it appeared in our country about 20 years ago. Need of powerful engines then launched many good changes.
What we have now is one of the three world’s fastest Nissan GT-Rs (MOSES) built in Russia and Lamborghini Gallardo Nera, which set the quickest standing mile record on December 22, 2013 in Greece.
UNLIMITEDCLASS
Since there are people, whose fantasy, budgets and philosophy make it impossible for them to meet the technical regulations of the existing racing classes, the Unlimited class was born.
Creatures that hit the grid in this class in Russia host mindblowing big-dollar solutions and are a thrill to see on track. MaxPowerCars Championship is home for this class along with the GT1/2/3/4 and Touring classes. Its events happen on the best Russian autodromes, and are definitely worth seeing.
