Much like a "foefie" slide, the canopy tour essentially
involves zigzagging down the kloof while stopping at each
platform to admire the expansive views and surrounding

To the east of Johannesburg, just outside the small town of Nigel, is one of the most popular attractions in Gauteng,
Marievale Bird Sanctuary. Approximately 1 000 hectares in extent, the sanctuary
supports more than 240 bird species, among them 65 waterbird species, including large populations of Reed
Cormorant, Red-knobbed Coot and Yellow-billed Duck. The sanctuary is also one of the best locations on the
Gauteng map to see Goliath, Black, Squacco and Purple Herons.
Although the construction of roads, railways, pipelines and power lines in the area has reduced the floodplain to
small dams, waterbirds still favour Marievale as a feeding and breeding place. Habitats of the sanctuary include
shallow open water, reedbeds and grassland, so the variety of birds is immense.
If you are an experienced birder with a bit of luck you may
even find Marsh Owl, African Grass-Owl, Red-chested Flufftail,
Curlew Sandpiper, Sand Martin,
Caspian Tern, Baillon’s Crake, Black-winged
Pratincole or even Black-tailed Godwit. Other recently spotted
birds include Slaty Egret, Yellow Wagtail, as
well as Baird’s, Pectoral and Buff-breasted Sandpipers.

Melville Koppies is one of the most beautiful natural settings in Johannesburg, It covers 150 hectares across wild, rocky koppies covered with indigenous fauna and
flora. In the spring, delicate wild flowers bloom, and in winter the Highveld grasses are prominent. From the height of these rocky outcroppings, the skyline of
Johannesburg can be viewed in all directions. Trails run throughout the area. It is also the site of an ancient Iron Age furnace, and many schools hold useful on educational trips through
the reserve.

The 81-hectare Botanical Garden form one of Johannesburg’s vital green lungs. The land for the gardens
was set aside in 1969 – at the time it was a sports field and golf driving range
consisting of bare veld and no trees. Now it consists of large, grassy, open spaces scattered
with trees and used by runners, picnickers and dog walkers. It hosts the occasional concert season and kite-
flying competitions. Visitors enjoy its special gardens – the Shakespeare
Garden, the Rose Garden, the Herb Garden, a Hedge Demonstration Garden and the main arboretum,
which houses family groupings of plants and trees of South Africa and the rest of
the world. The gardens contain an attractive mix of bunched indigenous and exotics surrounded by lawns,
overlooking the 7,5-hectare Emmarentia Dam, which dates back to the turn of the
century, popular with canoeists and boaters. There is also a tea pergola and a floreum for
meetings, shows and exhibitions. The dam is fed by two smaller dams above it, which are home to many
aquatic birds.

RESERVE
The reserve and along with 650 indigenous plants and trees, is home to over 150 different
species of birds. The terrain is mainly grassland, interspersed with indigenous shrubs and trees
and rocky outcrops. One of the over 50 species of trees found on
the reserve is the Buffalo Thorn which is used for several different purposes. Its bark is
used for treating sprains, while its thorns have symbolic meaning, symbolising both the future
and the ancestors. Its leaves are used to make a tea which is used as an aphrodisiac and legend
has it that sheltering under it branches during a storm will keep you safe from lightening as
lightening wont strike the tree.

3307 animals. The Zoo participates in conservation projects such the Wattle Crane
Recovery, Ground Hornbill, Vulture and Picker skill projects and manages several studbooks. The collection provides visitors with an opportunity to experience
wildlife in the heart of a city. The Zoo maintains a high standard of animal welfare, nutrition and ethical conduct to ensure the physical and psychological well-being of all its animals. On
