JBS AT THE WALK FOR EDUCATION

We arrived at the gate on time and bought our ticket. I met up with some of my friends from school and we decided to walk together. The walk took us around the Jumeirah Beach Park and was quick. I also received a Dubai cares T-shirt for taking part, which was nice. I think that the idea of organizing these walks to help underprivileged children is great. All the money from the participants (30 AED each) went towards this worthy cause. If the opportunity came again, I would walk for education. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world (Nelson Mandela)”. By Kevin Knapp G8

The JBS Senior Basketball team’s season came to an end on Friday as they lost to EIS-Jumeriah in the quarterfinals of the Dubai High School Basketball Championship. Our team qualified for the playoffs and finished the season 5th in Dubai. This was a growing and learning season in their first action at the Senior level. We came in second in our pool by beating Dubai College and JESS Arabian Ranches and losing only to Lycee Georges Pompidou. The team is looking forward to continuing the tradition of competitive basketball at JBS. The Under-14 season will start in Term 3 and tryouts will begin in the beginning of March. Although this not my first trip abroad, none of my previous travels have been as informative, interesting and enjoyable as the trip to Qatar for the MUN. The flight to Qatar was bumpy, but we arrived safe and sound. Zeyad and I were in Special Commission 2, which looked at drug trafficking and women's rights. On day 1, we did not have the opportunity to debate. Instead we had to "lobby", where we talked with others and spread the ideas for resolutions. We met many delegates from countries all over the world, such as China, India and Nigeria. After a day’s hard work, we had the opening ceremony. There was a great performance by a choir and band to bring the 2013 MUN conference to a start. In presence there was Sheikh bin Jassim bin Jaber bin Muhammad Al Thani, who is the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar and the Vice President of Shell in Qatar. On day 2, we debated many different resolutions, such as the elimination of drug trafficking and the promotion of women’s rights, which other delegates came up with. We had an educated debate, where many people gave their points of view. Many of them spoke well and seemed confident and informed, and some were very funny. On the final day, we were all confident with the MUN terminology in which we addressed others as “delegates”, and learned to speak in a diplomatic manner, not even realizing we were using it in everyday conversation. The closing ceremony was amazing, especially the performance by a Blues Band which drove the whole audience crazy and made Mr. Godel dance. In the evening, the MUN delegates had a get together. We enjoyed a variety of delicious cuisine and followed it up with bowling. We also watched magic show by an Indian illusionist who everyone found entertaining. However I knew all of his tricks beforehand. We had an equally bumpy flight on the return journey. However we all reached Dubai safely, tired and satisfied with our involvement in Thimun Qatar 2013. On behalf of the MUN team, I would like to thank Mr. Godel, Mr. Housley and Ms. Aaliya for their support and guidance during the trip. By Hassan Tamimi - Grade 10

If you have a talent for writing, drawing, or taking pictures and are in grades 6-10, you can help out the school's new online paper, JB News. It is meant to be a place where students can write about things that interest them. If you want to send in a picture you took, go ahead. If you want to list your name as a student willing to help with homework, feel free. What interests you might interest others, and since it is something to help the school community you can use it as a C&S activity. It is long term if you send in an entry 4 weeks in a row. The newspaper currently has only 3 articles and a contact page, but feel free to visit the website at http://04carshe.wix.com/jbnews. If you are interested in submitting to the newspaper then send an email stating what you wish to me at [email protected]. The supervisor for this project is Mrs. Asad my Computer Technology Teacher. THE STORY OF A STORY

My story has been told a thousand times

You know all that I know through your eyes

I can be funny or I can be sad

But you get angry If I’m dirty or bad

Some people judge me by my look

Who knew it’d be so hard to be a book?
