The effect of fast changing economic and social conditions have become significant on how people use and shape their environment .As population increases the demand for more infrastructure and facilities increases. Every Major Urban infrastructure insertions will have wide impact on the surrounding urban network. Metro Rail Project which is one of such insertion which happening in Kochi, kerala is also going to change the life of kochi city. New urban nodes landmarks might emerge at different locations of the city giving birth to new activities and identities to the spaces.

One of such space which have the potential of having a major impact is the area Jawaharlal Nehru stadium which is located at Kaloor, a major intersection of the city. The site has been used for holding large exhibitions and social gatherings every year ,which pursued the GCDA for proposing an exhibition hall at the same site. With the live proposal for a crossing metro station in the same place, the site is going to be one of the major node of the city housing three major crowd generating buildings inside it. There is a need for creative & innovative designing for such a highly potential & important site. The Thesis is developed from the opportunity to develop the site into a thriving urban plaza which provides the people a space for social interaction & expression and gives the community enhanced economic and cultural development.

Urban plazas are spaces that form focal points in the public space network, providing a forum for exchange, both social and economic and a focus for community expression. Around the world these spaces have small differences due to the socio-economic and geographic settings .Every society have is own terminology for such spaces , Italians use the term 'Piazza' and Turkish uses term 'meydan', the term 'plaza' comes from Spanish. But despite the differences their common characteristic is to convert a short trip to the centre into a more longer and rewarding social experience. An Urban plaza tend to be more urban in nature with a highly intensive used landscaping in contrast to usual open spaces and parks which are typically soft landscaped & less intensively used. When Parks provide a calm sanctuary ,urban plazas are designed to maximize interaction between people and encourage vitality. They tend to be spaces with distinct edges which can be building, roads, streets etc. The benefits of having an urban plaza range from personal and community health to encouraging economic investment.

Evolution of an Architectural design that blends Metro station ,Commercial area, Exhibition space and existing International Stadium into unified Urban plaza which fulfills the various needs of the site, which will become major node of the city in the future.

Aim

Design exploration aims to achieve the following objectives,

To create a new identity to the site as an Urban plaza which opens up new possibilities to people for recreation, formal and informal social interaction, transforming the site as one of the major landmark of modern metro city Kochi.

To adapt the existing international stadium & proposed metro station design to enhance its quality functionally ,aesthetically and blend the design with context.

To design efficient exhibition space & revenue generating commercial spaces taking in to consideration the social and economical factors of the context.

To identify and Address the possible issues of the site like parking, accessibility , flexibility etc and also enhance the streetscape around the site .

The scope of the thesis is limited to the development of master plan of the site and the design of exhibition space & commercial spaces and also to the harmonious blending of metro station & stadium with all the other spaces to create an Urban plaza.

Scope

The design is evolved over the assumption of future with stable economy and progressive pace of development. Effort of detailing is given to holistic design of the project not the intricate design of small scale interior spaces of the project.

Limitations

Expected Outcome The design provides new possibilities and meaning to the site through an urban resolution of the context. The design creates a flexible & vibrant urban plaza which caters various function like exhibition space , commerce and acts as bridge which brings together stadium & metros station into a unity, both aesthetically and functionally.
