Krisna Saravanamuttu is a Criminology

student at York University and is an

aspiring law school candidate. He possesses a

diverse range of advocacy and organizational experiences in the capacity of

President at the York Federation of students, panelist for the Toronto Transit

Commission’s Customer Service Advisory Panel, York University Senator,

member of the Canadian Peace Alliance steering committee and a member

of the National Executive committee of the Canadian Federation of Students.

Krisna has never been to Tamil Eelam because his parents were forced to

escape Sinhala persecution. Although he was born in Germany, Krisna works

to raise awareness about the humanitarian and human rights violations

endured by Tamils living in the North-East of Ceylon.

Siva's Biography:

Siva Vimalachandran was born in Jaffna butraised in Canada. He grew up in the impov-erished areas of Scarborough and comes

from a marginalized community background.Growing up Siva has always had the perseverance and determination to succeed in all areas whether it is academic, athletic, or social. He is currentlymajoring in Political Science and Psychology at York University. Siva’s skillshave led him to hold employment and positions with the York Federation ofStudents, the central students union at York University representing over50,000 students. He is also the Chairperson for the York University StudentCentre Corporation. During the height of the genocidal onslaught againstthe Tamil minority by government forces in Sri Lanka, Siva used his skills andexperience to advocate and alleviate the suffering of the people in his home-land. These skills include but are not limited to media correspondence,mobilization of the masses, academic seminars/presentations, and politicallobbying. It is with his skill set and his experience that Siva is running for theNCCT elections so that he may further serve the community and the intereststhey hold to the best of his ability.

Krisna's Vision for NCCT:

My vision for the National Council of Canadian Tamils is to organize ourcommunity on a democratic and cooperative basis for advancing Tamil-Canadian interests. The Council will provide advocacy on a number ofissues impacting Tamil-Canadians, organize events to foster Tamil commu-nity, and provide relevant services to make the day-to-day lives of Tamil-Canadians easier. The Council will involve political, economical,social, and cultural Tamil organizations in decision making. Moreover, theCouncil will educate Canadians and lobby decision makers on the genocidalscheme against Tamils perpetrated by successive Sri Lankan governments.An international war crimes investigations will end Sri Lanka’s culture ofimpunity. We will uphold the principles of the Tamil national cause toachieve self-determination for our brethren in the North-East of Ceylon.

Siva’s vision for the NCCT is to organize Canadian-Tamils on a democratic,cooperative basis for Canadian-Tamil interests, and advancing the interestsof the entire community. He also wants to provide a common frameworkwithin which Canadian-Tamils can communicate, exchange information,and share expertise, skills and ideas. It is important for Siva to ensure theeffective use and distribution of the resources of the Canadian-Tamil com-munity and to bring Canadian-Tamils together to discuss and co-operativelyachieve necessary political, social, and economic change wherever decision-making affects Canadian-Tamils. He also wants to facilitate co-operationamong Canadian-Tamils in organizing services which supplement the politi-cal, social and economic experience and provide for human needs thatdevelop a sense of community with our peers and with other members ofsociety. Siva understands that in order to strengthen the voices and aspira-tions of the Tamils in our homeland, we must be strong as a community inCanada as well.
