Commencement exercises of CPU Colleges

The 87th Commencement Exercises of Central Philippine

University Colleges was held on April 12, 2015 (Sunday) at

4:00PM at the CPU Parade Grounds. The Baccalaureate

Service was held at the Rose Memorial Auditorium at Eight

in the morning of the same day.

Dr. Oscar M. Lopez, a scion of the Lopez clan is this year’s

Commencement Speaker. Lopez is one of the most

respected and admired business leaders in Asia. He is the

Chairman Emeritus of Lopez Holdings Corporation

(formerly Benpress) and First Philippine Holdings

Corporation (FPH). Both are industrial companies with

major investments in broadcast, telecoms and cable, power

generation and distribution, property and manufacturing.

Named by Forbes magazine as among the “Heroes of

Philantrophy” in Asia, he is involved in several social and

environmental concerns. He received the IMD-Lombard

Odier Hentsch Distinguished Family Award for his

outstanding commitment on philantrophy from the

government of Monaco. He was the 2011

Ramon del Rosario, Sr. Awardee for Nation Building, and

was conferred with several doctorate degrees honoris causa

by the Philippine Women’s University, De La Salle

University, the University of the Philippines and Ateneo de

Manila University in recognition of his various initiatives in

Corporate Social Responsibility. He is noted for his

distinguished service in learning and humankind.

Lopez has a master’s degree in Public Administration from

the Littauer School of Public Administration in Harvard

University in 1955, where he also earned his Bachelor of

Arts Degree, cum laude in 1951.

This year’s Baccalaureate Speaker is Rev. Dr. Herman a. Moldez, a Master in Divinity (Pastoral studies) graduate of the Asian

Theological Seminary, and a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration of Philippine School of Business

Administration (PSBA). He was conferred with a Doctorate of Divinity honoris causa by Triune Biblical University in Kelso, Washington

USA for his work in leadership development.

He is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees and had served as General Secretary of Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship of the

Philippines, a Ministry among students and graduates for twenty five years; Chairman, Board of Trustees of Samaritana, a

transformational ministry of women involved in prostitution; Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees and President of Touch Asia

Potential, a ministry among the muslims in south East Asia, and Senior Pastor of Faith Baptist Church.

Moldez is the National Coordinator and Chief Spiritual Officer of Mentorlink International and International Care Ministries(ICM),

respectively. He is the author of Mentoring Conversations published by Christian Literature Crusade, and Mentoring for Life and

People would have rejected your ideas, laughed at your

situation, and even stripped you out of whatever respect you

have in the world. Maybe you have nothing left but a dream to

hold on to. The thing is that achievement and materials that

come with it is never stronger than self esteem. This value

helps people succeed; people who strongly believe in their own

self worth.

There was a man who lived his life in borrowed suits. But he

has done more than any other to create the clothes he could

never afford to acquire. The man was Elias Howe who invented

the sewing machine.

Most of us know Alexander Graham Bell who invented the

telephone. People laughed at his idea of bringing the human

voice along a wire so that it could be heard for miles. Bell’s self-

esteem was too much so that he stood against countless trials

to realize his idea. People no longer laugh at him since his

invention succeeded to influence the world.

Thomas Alva Edison tested the light bulb a thousand times

before he succeeded. Many other persons in their inventions,

advocacies and adventures became victorious, getting over the

barriers and challenges because they believed the best reward

is the belief in oneself. Their ideas are results of the reality they

experienced, of the necessity that we need out of their

painstaking observations, studies and analysis. You are now a

product of the quality education which your Alma Mater is

known for.

A School Graduation is a completion, and every completion is a

new beginning– a so called commencement. Whatever belief

you have in yourself is greater than what you learned in your

classroom. Begin a new adventure with yourself . Criticisms and

intimidations will only hold you back, unless you believe in

yourself. You may listen to other people but follow your yourself

and hold on to your dream. Sometimes intuition is better than

suggestion— but it depends upon your faith. Faith is the

antidote of fear.

Success comes with every acceptance you make. Consider that

scarcity of good opportunities in our society is a reality. Don’t

let this stop you from moving on to success, or abandoning your

dream! Reality is that God knows what you will be, who you will

become - before you were born.

You maybe, faulted, blamed, slandered; maybe battered and

disregarded, but see to it with steadfast determination that you

realize your dream-with faith in God, your creator and protector.

The 19 - year old lass from Nabas, Aklan is the daughter of Mr. and

Mrs. Reynante and Ma. Theresa Manipud. Mae Anne is an in-coming

fourth year student of the Bachelor of Science in Tourism at

First Centralian Artworks Exhibit held at the APCP

We mark the First Centralian Artworks Exhibit on March 12 to 13, 2015. It was the first of a series of artworks exhibit

exclusively for CPU faculty, staff and students. It’s time our Centralian visual artists came together to exhibit their talents

and artworks. The exhibit was held at the Alumni Promenade and Concert Park (APCP).

The artworks exhibit was a brainchild of University President Dr. Teodoro C. Robles which was conceived after we had a

showcase of international artist Nelfa Querubin works of art during the Dr. Rex D. Drilon Day 2015 celebrations.

It was time- constrained but the faculty, staff and

student visual artists brought out their wonderful

works of art. They include watercolor, pastel and

charcoal paintings, photography and digital

prints and other media. It’s a discovery which to

Chair, “will become bigger and better in the next

years to come.

Of course we are grateful to our dear alumni

association for the ample space at the APCP

provided for the exhibits and other related

events in the future. Kudos to our faculty, staff,

I was truly proud and happy for having a chance also to take out some pieces of my nature `shoots’ to the Centralian

Artwork Exhibits. I found the Central Spirit presenting itself through this cooperative endeavor. We dedicated the event to

our dear Centralians world wide. To God be the Glory!/ by C.A.Natividad

Centralian faculty, staff and students were found in the exhibits.

Seeds of Wisdom

Christians all over the world celebrate Holy Week. The highlight of the celebration is the Resurrection Day -- Easter! What does Easter means to us? Let us use EASTER as our outline: E – Enter into a conversation with God The temple curtain in the temple was torn into two when Jesus Christ died on the cross. It symbolizes our free access to God and that Jesus is our only mediator. Let us listen and talk to God. A – Answer the call of Jesus to get out from the tomb Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life.” He said this in the incident when he called out Lazarus to come out from the tomb. Symbolically, Jesus is calling us to get out from any death-like situations that we are in. By the grace of God, we can do this because Jesus has conquered death. S – Show to the world that our Jesus is alive in our lives The disciples in the book of Acts showed everyone the power of resurrection through their words and deeds. From a disappointed and dejected band of people, they became a passionate group who tirelessly spread the Gospel. We, too, should live lives empowered by the Easter event.

T – Teach everyone about the commands of Jesus The resurrection of Jesus has validated everything that he has said and done. Because of Easter, the teachings of Jesus were not just merely great words from a master teacher but it has become imperative commands. E – Encourage people by giving hope When Jesus conquered death, it gave hope to his disciples. It has given them hope to fulfill the commands of Jesus, and it has given them hope of eternal life. As Christians we have that hope also. Let us give that hope to others. R – Restore what is broken Paul said that God was reconciling the world back to him in Jesus Christ. Let us start restoration wherever we are.

1st LT Fernan James Magbanua

Centralian Heroes

At 11:55 AM on March 4,

2015, 33 year-old 1st LT

Fernan James Magbanua was

killed while on a call of duty.

He was with the military

convoy on a resupply mission

to the troop of the Joint Task

Group in Sulu when the

i n c i d e n t h a p p e n e d .

Magbanua died of injuries

caused by an IED explosion

attributed to the bandits in

Sitio Bud Bunga, Barangay

Pansul in Patikul Sulu.

Lt. Magbanua was the substitute Commander Officer of the

military unit on that fateful day. A graduate of Bachelor of

Science in Commerce, major in Finance from CPU, he took a

lateral entry in the Philippine Army and was first assigned in

Basilan 2010. A firefight ensued for 30 minutes after the

treacherous surprise attack.

Lt. Magbanua showed love of country and excellence in the

military service . CPU is proud of him./CP

CPU Enrollment goes online

Online Registration for CPU will be effective First

Semester 2015-2016. The system has been pilot-tested

last semester 2014-1015 with the College of Computer

Studies.

According to Dr. Cirilo C. Calibjo, Dean of the College, the

full implementation will apply to bonafide students (2nd

year and above whose data are already encoded with the

University Registrar’s Office.

The data base program is seen to provide enrollees with

access facility during the enrolment period. The system is

designed to help the influx of enrollees from different parts

of Iloilo and other provinces who prefer to enroll in

CPU./can

Starting SY 2015-2016, Central Philippine University (CPU) will offer the new four-year program BS Respiratory Therapy (RT). Proposed by the Dean of the College of Medicine Dr. Henry Gonzales. BSRT will respond to the need for respiratory therapists in healthcare institutions here and abroad. Accordiing to CPU President Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, BSRTalso complements other programs of the University such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, medical laboratory science and other similar courses. Graduates who pass the RT licensure examinations will be able to use the suffix RTRP - for Respiratory Therapist Registered in the Philippines - after their names. It maybe noted that CPU has also offered the pioneering programs like BS Packaging Engineering, and BS Software Engineering. Enrollment for 1st semester for school year 2015-2016 will start April 27, 2015. Classes will start June 15, 2015.

Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy The Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy is a 4-year program consisting of general science education subjects and professional subjects. The fourth year level is the internship program in an accredited training pulmonary laboratory with rotational duties in different sections of one or more hospitals such as Pulmonary Diagnostics, General Respiratory Care, Pulmonary rehabilitation, Adult Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal and Pediatric Critical Care Unit, and Sleep Laboratory.

CPU is the first to offer the course in Western Visayas and the 2nd in the whole Visayas (1st is Cebu Doctors’ University)

After finishing the course and passing the licensure examination, the professional suffix ‘RTRP’ which stands for Respiratory Therapist Registered in the Philippines, shall be added to the name of the

graduate.

Graduates of the course may also go into these specific professions, careers or trades Clinical Practice: Respiratory Therapist in hospital pulmonary laboratories and clinics; sanitarian, home care services, and emergency medical service practitioner.

THE CPU SOFTBALL TEAM STRIKES AGAIN!

The CPU Women’s Softball Team retained the softball championship in the recently concluded National PRISAA Meet held in Iloilo last April

12 to 18. It was an exciting and closely contested final played at the CPU pitch where the locals won against Region 11 (Davao), 5 – 3. It is the fourth

time that CPU came out champions in this event in recent years, having previously won in 2011, 2012 and 2014. In 2013 the team was invited to play

in the UAAP Invitationals together with some selected squads from Luzon where they landed in the top four. In a way this was redemption of lost glory

in this discipline as the CPU team used to be in the forefront of this sporting event in the last decades of the last century. We remember very well its

long-time coach and mentor Mr. Porfirio Mayordomo and standouts Loex de la Rosa, Perlita Kilayko, Ninfa Cajilig, Cynthia Gencianeo, Louise Vail and

many others during those glory days of CPU softball. The HS team of that era was national PRISAA champion for 3 consecutive years.

The present coach of the softball team is Pastor Kim Lain Braña de la Cruz, a kinder alumnus who comes from a pedigree of Cen tralians. It

was in 2007 that CPU President Atty. Acanto invited Kim to come over to Central (from his pastoral work in Seattle) and help in resurrecting the

university’s softball development program which was in the doldrums. This bore fruit after a couple of years and produced bet ter than expected results:

4 national championships, 1 silver and 1 bronze.

Aside from his involvement in sports development programs, Pastor Kim has also been working among young people and children back in

the US as youth pastor of the 40,000 strong 2nd Baptist Church of Houston. At CPU he spearheaded the development of a children’s ministry which

resulted in the creation of UC’s “Kids’ Zone”. “Kids want to belong, and if they feel wanted they will keep out of trouble”, he says.

Pastor Kim is an active supporter of CPUAAI’s alumni programs, bringing his team to play in alumni-organized events and giving sports

clinics whenever requested. He is also a prime mover of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes of the Philippines involved in evangelization and values

formation among athletes. Pastor Kim is instrumental in forming the support group “59 Acres” (24 hectares) with the specific aim of helping the sports

program of CPU. This group has solicited donations in the US for athlete uniforms and equipment (equivalent to about P 25,000 per athlete) and

subsidizes accommodation for board & lodging of the softball team (at P5, 000/month per person). Pastor Kim’s approach in sports evangelization

starts in the quarters of his young wards, later cascading among other athletes, their families and the community.

Pastor Kim and his wife, Tara, have two children aged 15 and 5. They are partners in what they consider a family ministry. K im’s father, Mr.

Augusto (Nene) de la Cruz, was a long-time coach of the CPU basketball team; his mother, the former Independencia Braña is a nursing alumna who

placed 3rd in the nursing board. Kim serves as Special Assistant for Sports under President Ted Robles and assists Sports Coordinator Al Somo in the

overall sports program of CPU..

When asked what he gets out of all the things he’s doing, Kim answered: “…. It’s the satisfaction of answering God’s call in changing lives

according to His will”. Pastor Kim ….. truly a Positive Centralian by heart and deed.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

Central Philippine University is one of the schools in Iloilo City

hosting some of the games in the National PRISAA 2015. It is

also serves as quarters of Regions 11and 12.
