BOT

Another first was achieved by your BOT on Thursday afternoon June 25, 2020 when our 2020 Open Board Meeting and our Annual Meeting were held via a Zoom conference call. There were 118 members of our Community on their computers or phones listening and adding to the discussion. It has been a very hectic last four months.

I am sure there were other boards that faced serious problems, but I doubt any of them covered the magnitude and range of the decisions that this Board had to make and is still making - everything from the safety of all of our residents to the possible bankruptcy of FSUF if we make a wrong decision. To all those who supported our efforts, we offer a profound thank you.

The open board meeting started with our roll call via Zoom, with all present and accounted for. Then Weezie Huntington, our BOT President, moved that we memorialize previous Action Items that had been approved by the BOT in closed session. Five of these pertained to the Grounds Committee and dealt with tree removal of 56 non-compliant trees for $16,000, tree pruning for $8,000, dead tree removal for $4,000, additions of potassium to fertilizer for $6,500, and the addition of Bill Kristoff to the Grounds Committee. Also, Francis “Frank” McKittrick was approved to be co-treasurer of the Finance Committee. Welcome to Bill and Frank and thanks to them for stepping up. This would be a good time to let everyone know that we need volunteers for all our committees. No special background or training is needed. We offer on-the-job training and a complete benefit package consisting of the satisfaction that you are doing something for your fellow residents. In addition, our HOA will not have to pay someone to do what is needed.

Michael Polulak, our lawyer, then gave an overview of whether the Governor’s recent orders would allow us to open the outdoor pool. His opinion was that it would not be a good idea because the guidelines were next to impossible to meet and there was a very good chance, we, as an association, could be sued if someone caught the Corona Virus because of using the pool. If they passed away, we would be faced with at least a seven-figure settlement equally borne by all the residents. He also discussed the use of a Release Agreement that all users of the pool would have to sign, which in his opinion would not protect us. The problem is complying with all the State’s Guidelines to the letter. All a lawyer would need to do is collect pictures showing interactions at the

pool, find one case of improper social distancing, and we would be in trouble.

There were many questions raised by those on Zoom, which he answered. The BOT hopes his responses were to the satisfaction of all the participants.

The discussion then moved to the other amenities; tennis, pickleball, quoits, and bocce. He felt these had a much lower threshold to cross prior to opening.

A vote was taken, and the Board voted 5 to 0 to open the non-pool amenities, including tennis, pickleball, quoits, bocce, etc. Guidelines are being prepared to cover all the rules that must be followed by any participant in these activities. They will be published when finished and approved by our lawyer. Please remember any deviation from these rules may result in that activity being closed again.

A vote was then taken by the Board on opening the pool, and by a 5 to 0 vote it was decided to keep the outdoor and the indoor pools closed, unless the guidelines were revised to less stringent requirements.

Dave McMullan, Treasurer, then gave a presentation on our finances, which are very positive for now.

Mary Wasylyk, our Community Manager from RCP, brought us up to date on the status of indoor pool repairs which will be starting fairly soon. This included the solar project which is being studied by our engineering firm and the new Reserve Study rough draft which has been completed and reviewed by the BOT, with comments and requested changes.

Residents were given the opportunity to ask questions about these items.

At that time, the Open Board Meeting was adjourned, and the Annual Meeting was opened. Weezie Huntington and Anita Fray ran unopposed for their Board positions, so they were elected by acclimation. The amendment to the capitol contribution did not receive 267 yes votes needed to be approved. We have nine months to complete this process. Hopefully, when all the ballots are counted, we will receive the necessary votes. The BOT will be furnishing additional information to the Community in order to answer any questions about this amendment. Remember, this does not apply to current homeowners. It will apply to new buyers. Any house listed before the amendment is passed is grandfathered in. The buyer of that house will not have to pay the higher fee.

The meeting was then adjourned. Please note the Zoom meeting was recorded and

you will be notified via e-mail when it is available for viewing.

Bluebirds at FSUF!by Thomas Smith

Once again, a pair of Bluebirds have chosen one of my birdhouses to raise a family. Currently, they are busy getting food to their babies.

The male Bluebird is bigger and likes to sport his beautiful blue feathers.

The female has only a small number of blue feathers. When the male spreads his wings to fly, the blue color

is even more spectacular! Someday, I plan to photograph that wing spread.Editor’s note: Pictures are on page 19. I look forward to seeing pictures of the wingspread and maybe even the babies! Thank you!

On our cover… As I walked around our community on Sunday, June 14, I was impressed by the wide variety of ways residents displayed and honored the American flag. Flag Day has special significance in my family, as it is also my Dad’s birthday. He would have been 95 this year. Growing up, we thought it was an appropriate day for his birth. He served in the Navy, was a life member of the American Legion, and installed an amazing flagpole in our front yard. He was also the local Boy Scout troop leader. As members of the local scout troops, we participated in many flag ceremonies. Thank you all for bringing these memories to the forefront with your lovely displays of our country’s unifying symbol.

Additional contributors – Thank you to Joanne Jarvis and Rosemary Albach for sharing quarantine thoughts. Thank you to photographers Rosemary Albach, Jeff Bice, Weezie Huntington, Barbara Ladman and Tom Smith for all the fabulous pictures. Thank you to Joe and Fran Bice and Karen Mauger for sharing Jeff Bice’s pictures. Thank you!

Quarantine Timeby Joanne Jarvis

I’m definitely one of those people who loves the time at home to get things done. I’m sorry we are experiencing this awful pandemic, but I’m thriving on this time to take a very deep breath and just use the time to do the following activities.

Relax, read, putter around the house at a much slower pace than normal and enjoy this sense of feeling laidback!! That being said, I have cleaned out closets, nooks, crannies and the attic space and made several drop-offs to Goodwill and the dog shelter. I’ve cooked and baked a lot! When our kids drop off our weekly groceries at the door, (and we are most grateful for that), they always find a special home cooked something or other to take back with them along with some fresh baked cookies or other dessert. It’s a great exchange!! As time passes, we are able to have some “driveway social distancing visits.” Had a birthday party in May that way!!

A big personal benefit also for the two of us is we started walking everyday rain or shine. We have met so many people we hadn’t known before. We witnessed winter leave and spring arrive in the Community in a way we had never before. We see more of our neighbors and enjoy chatting it up with them, while observing the 6-foot rule.

And my last comment will be that I am taking advantage of Facebook to keep myself informed and entertained. It really helps me to continue to feel “connected!”

Stay well all!

How Did You Spend Your Quarantine Time?

by MaryAnn Yurcisin

Love it or hate it? How did you spend your quarantine time?

Are you one of the people who loves the time at home to get stuff done or one who thrives in the company of other residents and this time made you “crazy?”

Please share your story and / or pictures of how you spent your time. Did you love it or hate it? What delighted you? What surprised you? What did you learn? How did you stay in touch with family and friends?

Please submit your story via email to [email protected] or handwritten in my mail tube at 6 Bunker Hill. Please let me know if you would prefer it be listed anonymously or with your name.

Ladies Luncheonby Rosemary Albach

For a minute, let’s discuss the resolve of women. Social distancing, self-imposed isolation, and restrictive facial coverings are no match for ladies hankering for female company. A few ladies, who miss their regular Mah Jongg game and going to movies or luncheons together, have come up with a solution. So how do they solve the dilemma? Why they lunch on the lawn.

You may have noticed a circle of unmasked ladies sitting in chairs far more than six feet apart in the shade of an obliging tree. The food is consumed quickly and then the conversations begin. If you passed by, you may have heard the laughter and the chatter. Subject matter varies but certain subjects are frowned upon; topics like grandchildren, health problems and gossiping are a few. Television programs, Netflix shows and food are always popular.

How our time is spent during these restricted days is discussed. Some play the computer Mah Jongg game, individually or with friends. But that lacks social interaction. It fills the time, but it is equivalent to playing a game of solitaire. Conversations aren’t much of what is going on now but more to the point what will happen when things are “normal.” Will there be traveling in our future? What will happen with our hair? Color? Cut? Most important, will the clothes in the closets still fit?

The Wonder World of FOODBarbecue Time

by Delia Cicchetti

“Summertime and the living is easy,” so they say in song. It’s the time for backyard get-togethers, and of course, barbecue. Barbecue can consist of meats, vegetables, fish and even fruit.

Stuffed Hamburgers 1½ pounds ground beef salt and pepper to taste 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 4 strips bacon, cut into small pieces ½ large onion, chopped ½ cup or more grated cheddar cheese 4 hamburger buns Lettuce, tomato, and pickles for garnish

Mix ground beef with salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce. Form into 8 thin burgers about ½ inch thick and refrigerate.Cook bacon until crisp and transfer to a paper towel. Remove all but about 1 tablespoon of bacon grease from the pan. Add the chopped onion to the bacon grease and cook until golden brown; mix with the bacon.Spoon about 1 tablespoon of the bacon mixture in the middle of one patty. Sprinkle with grated cheddar. Top with another hamburger patty and seal the edges. Grill burgers over medium heat. Place on buns and garnish with lettuce, tomato and pickles.

Barbecued Salmon with Mango Salsa 2 salmon steaks* olive oil as needed salt and pepper to taste 1 mango, peeled and finely chopped 2 tablespoons chopped red onion ½ jalapeno pepper, deseeded and finely chopped 3 tablespoons cilantro leaves 3 tablespoons lime juice zest of one lime

Rub oil over fish and season with salt and pepper. Place fish on barbecue and cook at medium heat 6 to 8 minutes each side.Stir together the mango, onion, jalapeno pepper, cilantro, lime and zest. Top grilled fish with salsa and serve. * In lieu of salmon any firm fish such as swordfish or

tuna can be substituted.

Grilled Beef Teriyaki

1 whole flank steak ¾ cup teriyaki sauce ¼ cup honey 2 teaspoons sesame oil 1 green scallion, cut into 1 inch pieces

Place flank steak in a bowl or pan. Mix teriyaki sauce, honey, sesame oil and scallion. Pour over flank steak and pierce meat with a large fork to allow marinade to seep in. Marinade at least 2 or 3 hours, or overnight.

Grill on barbecue. Let stand a few minutes and then slice across the grain. Boil remaining marinade and serve over sliced meat.

Grilled Vegetables

5 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons lemon juice salt and pepper to taste ½ teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning 1 pound asparagus, trimmed 3 small carrots, cut in half 1 medium summer squash, cut into ½ inch slices 1 medium red onion, cut into wedges ½ pound mushrooms, cut in half 1 large red or green pepper, cut into 1 inch strips Chopped parsley and lemon wedge for garnish

In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Remove about 1/3 of marinade and set aside.Add the vegetables and toss to coat. Other vegetables of your choosing can be substituted. Cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes or up to 2 hours.Grill vegetables on medium high heat until tender, turning occasionally. Place on a platter and drizzle with remaining marinate. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and garnish with lemon wedges.

Grilled Peaches, Nectarines and Pineapples

3 firm peaches, pitted and cut in half 3 firm nectarines, pitted and cut in half 6 or more fresh pineapple rings melted unsalted butter as needed brown sugar as needed

Needles Workby Rosemary Albach

Condo knitting is a simple but unique knitting technique that uses two sizes of knitting needles to create a light and “drapey” material. Use this style of knitting for simple scarves, shawls, soft sweaters, or anything you want to feel open. You can use any yarn to try out this technique; softer yarns give better results. You should consider the weight of the yarn. Thin or mid-weight yarns are easier, because you are more likely to have the knitting needles you need.

This is done in garter stitch, knitting every row. By working with needles that have a large size difference, the rows of knitting alternate between standard stitches and large, open stitches. You can also use needles with less size contrast and try other stitch patterns for a different look.

Unless you have a pattern that suggests specific needles, there's not an exact formula for what size needles to use for condo knitting. However, a bigger size difference makes a more open and fluid knitted fabric. Cast on; knit the first row with the small needles. The sample pictured started with a set of US size 7 (4.5mm) needles. Next, choose a needle that is much larger. For this, the sample needle is a US size 19 (15mm).

No matter what kind of knitting you do, it's a good idea to make a test swatch. For condo knitting, make several swatches with different size pairings to see how the look changes.

Cast On: With the smaller needles, cast on any number of stitchesRow 1: Use the small needles to knit every stitch. Row 2: Use the large needle to knit every stitch. Repeat rows 1 and 2, alternating between the needle sizes.Knitting with the large needle for the first time feels very tight and even awkward. It gets easier as you add rows, but you should make sure that you work the stitches loose enough to slide along the large needle. For variety, you could also knit several rows with the small needles before switching back to alternating between large and small.Finishing: To bind off, work your last row on the small needle, then bind off with the second small needle.

Grandparents’ Corner‘Friendly Hives’

by Gail Hillman

Hopefully, within the near future, we will be able to entertain our friends and families in our homes; this is something we have all longed for and missed. In anticipation of new joyous times ahead, wouldn’t it be wonderful to do a project that will greet our guests and bring smiles to their faces. One such project you and your grandchildren will love doing is the adorable terracotta bumble beehive depicted above. The best part of this sun-shiny craft is that you can do it in all sizes. You can use small or medium terra cotta pots for this craft and arrange some in your garden or inside your home, or you can use a large one to greet people at your front door. Either way, the “cuteness” of your creation will bring smiles to all faces.

Materials:

• Terracotta pots of desired sizes or one large one• Yellow craft paint• Foam paint brush• Garden wire• Twine• Hot glue gun• Yellow, black, and white foam sheets• Black magic marker

Directions:

Cover your work surface with newspaper. Now, you and your grandchildren can paint the terracotta pot or pots yellow. (You can use Crayola yellow paint if you are working with your grandchildren.) When your pots have dried, give them another coat. Once dry, wrap

twine around the pot or pots. Use your hot glue gun to carefully adhere the twine. If you are making one very large pot, use a thicker twine. Make sure to leave most of the yellow showing.

Now, cut out the entrance to the hive using your black foam. (The size varies according to the size of your pots.) You can use hot glue to adhere the hive entrance or purchase self-stick foam sheets. The next step is to create the little bees. All you have to do is sketch an oval and join it with a sketched circle. This will be the body. Now, cut out the bees. Turn them to the other side and slowly sketch the stripes, the eyes, and a smile on each bee. (If you don’t want to create your own, you can purchase many varieties of little craft bees on Amazon.) Create their wings using the white foam.

One of the last steps is to hot glue the garden wire to the back of each bee. When the glue has dried, you can now glue the bottom of the wire to the back of each pot. Carefully bend the wire into position. In addition, you can use a strong piece of duct tape to make sure the wire stays in place.

Your project is now fini! Place your pots around your garden, inside your home, or the large one right outside of your front door. See how many beautiful smiles you will get when you are finally able to say to your family and friends, “It’s so good to see you; please come in.”

Ramblingsby Rosemary Albach

Thomas Paine thought he lived through Times That Try Men’s Souls. That was nothing, Thomas, to what we are going through. These past few months have indeed been trying times. No, we’re not fighting for our freedom; we are fighting for our sanity. Who would have believed that we would have to live through anything like this?

These last few months have been the most trying times of my life. Probably yours as well. Every day there’s something else I’m trying.

Over the past four or five months, I try to figure out what the weather is going to be like each day. Will it ever warm up; will it ever stop raining; is that the sun trying to come out; is it finally summer? Each day I walk into the closet and try to figure out what I should wear: something warm; something with short sleeves, (I can always put on a sweater); something sensible or simply trying to find something that fits.

First it was try to buy face masks and gloves. Then it was try to make a mask. Now it’s try to figure a way that my glasses don’t fog up wearing a mask. Oh, I’ve tried many suggested solutions. It’s not as bad as it was or else, I’m getting used to looking through the haze.

Trying to decide how to fill the day is challenging. How many times can you clean out the cabinet, wash the clothes that don’t really get dirty, move the furniture around, move it back, try to find something to put together for breakfast/ lunch /supper, Trying to get something completed; trying to get motivated enough to complete something, anything. How many books did I try to read? Did I actually think I would complete that embroidery project? Well I tried. No, truthfully, I didn’t try, I put it away.

Trying to get through each morning without taking the 11:00 AM nap. Same for the afternoon, trying to stay awake long enough to go to bed each night.

I’m tired of trying to find T. P. and assorted paper products. Tired of trying to locate disinfectant, then disinfecting everything in the house, including the mail. Tired of trying to fill, if not 24 hours, then at least 16 hours a day. Well I’m tired of trying!

These are trying times and it’s trying, trying to figure out how this all came about.

Benefits of a good vocabulary...I recently called an old engineering buddy of mine and asked what he was working on these days. He replied that he was working on "Aqua-thermal treatment of ceramics, aluminum and steel under a constrained environment." I was impressed until, upon further inquiry, I learned that he was washing dishes with hot water under his wife's supervision. –Anon
