Perhaps not many people know this, but Thiess in Indonesia began business in the early 1970s. We were best known for our technical expertise in civil & construction and were mainly contracted for important infrastructure projects. One of our early successes includes the construction of Jakarta’s old commercial airport, Halim Perdanakusuma.

Thiess Indonesia today has grown to become a provider of mining and construction solutions for the Mining, Civil & Construction and Process & Handling industries. The company was formally established as PT Thiess Contractors Indonesia in November 1988 and has since completed over 200 projects across the Indonesian archipelago.

Thiess Indonesia is now best known for our mining expertise. In our current mining portfolio are important clients such as PT Arutmin Indonesia, PT Bayan Resources Tbk and PT Kaltim Prima Coal. We are proud to be of service for our clients by delivering quality results whilst being a leader in safe mining. The best safety record we have to date is 55 million man-hours free of LTI (Loss Time Injury). We presently have over 8,000 people employed.

In this premier edition of ExperThiess, I welcome you to read more about our projects, our operations and our initiatives. I hope these brief updates will provide you with a sense of who we are today.

Best regards,

Roy OlsenPresident Director

project update

Arutmin - Thiess Alliance 10th AnniversaryJune 12, 2010 marked 10 years to the day Thiess Indonesia commenced our Life of Mine Alliance for client PT Arutmin Indonesia at Satui and Senakin Coal Mine Project. The Arutmin contract, at the time, was the largest single contract ever awarded to Thiess or any Leighton Holdings group of companies. It is currently the second largest mining operation in the Thiess Group. The Arutmin Projects is also one of a select group of mines where we fulfil a full mine operation, including operation of washplants and hauling, crushing and loading of coal onto barges.

In the 10 years, we have mined more than 850 mbcm of overburden and 120 mt of coal. The Arutmin sites today employ almost 3,500 employees. To recognise the contribution and efforts of all employees both at Thiess Indonesia and PT Arutmin Indonesia, celebration dinners were held on site as well as Jakarta on 15 and 17 December, respectively.

We are all very proud of what has been achieved and look forward to many more fruitful years of the Arutmin - Thiess Alliance. •

Following the on-time completion of the Belut Pit in late June 2010, TCI Sangatta was once again appointed to manage a new mining area named Peri Pit. The new pit is located not too far south of the Melawan office. It stretches approximately 750 acres wide and is classified multi-seam with 12 layers of coal at roughly 6100 CV. The Peri Pit is much larger than surrounding pits.

In early July 2010 to mark the beginning of activities at the pit, the TCI Sangatta team held a launching in which employee representatives and management got together for thanksgiving prayers. In accordance to local tradition, a sacrificial cow was presented at the launching and its meat was donated to nearby orphanages and surrounding communities.

As in all new pits, the TCI Sangatta team began activities with land clearing and top soil removal. On 03 August 2010, the team began drilling and blasting followed by overburden removal.

During August 2010, it is estimated that the TCI Sangatta team removed about 815,000 BCM of overburden. The team is confident that at the pace we are operating, we are able to attain the target of 5.5 million BCM of overburden removed and 319,000 MT of coal excavated by the year’s end. The team, however, is faced with the challenge of building a drainage system in one of the benches along the north walls. It is also estimated that the Peri Pit has a mine life of five years.

The Peri Pit project is clear evidence of our client’s, PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), continued trust in Thiess Indonesia’s capability to deliver project excellence. The TCI Sangatta team is proud to be able to continue works for KPC and looks forward to adding to TCI’s on-going history at the Sangatta Mine. •

project update

TCI FM Radio StationsThere’s something new at Melak, Satui and Senakin in these past few months. Today, employees at the sites are able to listen to their own radio station that airs 24 hours a day. These radio stations were modeled after the radio station that is currently operating at TCI Sangatta.

The TCI radio stations at these sites are classified as community radios. Their transmission is heard not only at site but also throughout nearby areas. The TCI radio stations broadcast helpful content such as safety messages, talk shows about the job, employee profiles, general news and of course, entertainment to accompany employees at work. These broadcasts are hoped to create better relations among employees at all sites.

MELAK MINE MEDIAThe Melak Radio began its trial broadcast on 20 August 2010, with the name 3MFM (Melak Mine Media FM) on 107.7 MHz. On 8 November 2010, 3MFM obtained its official license from the Regional Broadcasting Commission who also issued the station’s recommendation letter to the Central Broadcasting Commission in Jakarta. According to 3MFM Coordinator, Senior Project Control Sudaryadi, the station aims to recruit a full time announcer and complete government related administrations such as equipment certifications in the near future. “It took no time for 3MFM to find a special place in the hearts of the TCI Melak employees,” he said.

Main programs of 3MFM include “Say Yes to

ONE TEAM ONE VOICESince May 2010, the Senakin ICT team, led by ICT Coordinator Albani Soeleman, began socializing the radio station to all Senakin employees and it was received with an enthusiastic welcome. Further actions were taken to prepare establishment of the radio station at Senakin, including obtaining approvals from community leaders around the mine as well as the local government of Senakin. The radio is named Thiess Senakin FM, with the slogan “One Team One Voice”.

Thiess Senakin FM has been in trial broadcast since August 2010. “We are still working on administrative issues pertaining to the station’s license. Hopefully, we will receive a recommendation letter from the Regional Broadcasting Commission of South Kalimantan in December 2010,” said Pak Albani over a phone interview.

On 25 November 2010, Thiess Senakin FM has recruited Sahmi Heriyanti as its permanent announcer, as well as producer whose job desk includes creating and producing all broadcast radio programs. The Thiess Senakin FM programs include “Bincang-Bincang”, “Sapa-Sapa”, AM KM, Global News, Info Thiess and other talk shows.

THE SOUND OF MINECome by Bukit Baru Camp at Satui. You will see a 20 feet container at the very gate of the camp that has been transformed into an FM radio station. Thiess Satui FM, as it is named, began to air in early October 2010. Today, the station has two main announcers: Ika Mayasari and Novian Hafiandi. With the slogan “The Sound of Mine”, this radio aims to create a safe and communicative working place at the Satui site.

On 10 November 2010, Satui radio, together with Senakin radio, conducted a Hearing Evaluation to obtain its license as a community radio. On this occasion, Thiess Satui and Senakin presented both radio stations to the Regional Broadcasting Commission, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Regional House of Representatives, as well as community leaders from Satui and Senakin.

One of Thiess Satui FM’s administrators, QA Engineer Nani Wijaya, hopes that they will be able to get the official broadcasting license soon. “We are preparing to install receiver radios in heavy plant equipment and workshop area,” added Nani.

Thiess Satui FM programs include “Amankan”, Positive Contact” (send your messages), “Jalan Sutra” (cross culture), “Cas Cis Cus” (English lesson) and “Our Champion” (employee’s profile). •

community

The program was launched in Balikpapan on 16 September 2010, which coincided with the first donation made by the company.

The program was a good exercise in collaboration. All computers were carefully selected and restored by the ICT teams across all sites. They were then handed over to the Community teams at respective sites for official donation and distribution to beneficiary institutions.

The program is also a good example of Thiess Indonesia’s continued commitment and contribution towards community development. This particular exercise demonstrates the company’s dedication in improving IT infrastructure for communities and institutions in remote areas.

During the Jakarta donation, Thiess Indonesia’s President Director Roy Olsen expressed the importance of information technology and that Thiess Indonesia will continue to pay close attention to enhancing the quality of education within communities surrounding our operational areas.

The Computers for Better Education program was very well received by the public. The event received media coverage by various papers including Kaltimpost, Tribun Kaltim, Tambang Magazine, Balikpapan TV, Jakarta Globe Newspaper, Banjarmasin Post and Detikcom, a popular online news portal. •

Computers for Better EducationIn September to November 2010, Thiess Indonesia was engaged in the “Computers for Better Education” program, in which about 800 pre-loved desktops and laptops were donated to various educational institutions and community groups surrounding our project sites, including Balikpapan and Jakarta.

Thiess Indonesia Peduli

Merapi Donation

In an effort to provide aid for the victims of the Mount Merapi eruption, on Monday, 11 April 2011, Thiess Indonesia submitted rehabilitation fund assistance to two Elementary Schools at Merapi. The fund was collected by a fund raising by employees of Thiess Indonesia and matched 2:1 by Management. All proceeds are committed for the rehabilitation phase, in particular the reconstruction of schools.

The handover ceremony was held at Canisius Prontakan Elementary School in Ngargomulyo Village, Magelang. To represent the company, Corporate Services Manager, Supriyanto symbolically handed over the funds to Principal of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Muhammadiyah Ngadipuro, Hisham Bakri, and Headmaster of Canisius Prontakan Elementary, H. Warsono. A total of IDR 120,000,000 was donated.

The two schools were selected based on a survey conducted in January 2011, which took into account the level of damage sustained by the schools’ overall structure and lack of initial public funding for these schools.

The event was also attended by local public figures, including Ma’arif Award recipient, Father V. Kirjito Pr., a representative from the Department of National Education, Mujiman, Chairman of Muhammadiyah Dukun district, Mohani, Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Muhammadiyah Ngadipuro School Committee, as well as teachers and the children of both schools.

We hope that this donation will help improve the level of education for the children and, in the long run, a better future for the community. •

Welcome, New Apprentices!

The current batch is the largest intake in the history of the TCI Apprenticeship Program. Flashing back to 1992 when the program was first launched, there were only eight apprentices enrolled. Another unique fact about this batch is that 80% of the apprentices are from Kalimantan. This is clear evidence of TCI’s continuing commitment to developing local communities surrounding its project sites. Currently, a total of 514 students are enrolled in the TCI Apprenticeship Program across six TCI project sites throughout Kalimantan.

The TCI Apprenticeship Program is a work experience program that was created as part of TCI’s commitment to community development. It was also created to fulfill the need for high quality Plant recruits. Each year, TCI invites a number of high school graduates from East and South Kalimantan to join the 10-semester long program. The graduates must first undergo a rigorous selection process which entails a series of written exams in mathematics, English, aptitude and psychology. For the successful candidate, the process is followed by interview and, finally, health check.

Each apprentice is given a fixed salary, overtime pay, transport allowance, life insurance and accommodation for the length of the program. Each semester, apprentices are obligated to follow 5 weeks training at the Balikpapan Training Centre followed by 16 weeks on site. Apprentices are entitled a 2-week leave per semester. All successful graduates are eligible to work for TCI’s mechanic, electric or welding department.

According to Trade Training Senior Supervisor Alusiansyah, TCI’s Apprenticeship Program is a favorite among similar programs in Kalimantan. “Not only because it is free of charge, but also because of its quality.” The program is internationally accredited through TAFE Queensland. “The program opens up a wider career path,” adds Alusiansyah.

In 2008, TCI’s Apprenticeship Program received an award for Best Apprentice Program 2007 from the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration. •

In July 2010, the program welcomed 131 new students, from a total of 1,066 registered. The group was divided into three clusters: 80 students in four Mechanic classes, 36 students in two Electric classes, and 15 students in the one Welder class.

The graduates, including four female graduates were grouped into three disciplines: 59 from the mechanical apprentice program, 38 from auto electrical and 14 from welder (fabrication).

The ceremony was attended by a number of government officers from Balikpapan and Jakarta, including Indonesian Department of Labor, represented by Apprenticeship Director Drs. Bagus Marijanto, MA. Thiess Indonesia was represented by Manager Corporate Services, Supriyanto, and Manager HR, Bob Davis.

“We are very pleased today as this batch has the largest number of graduates to date as well as female graduates for the first time in the history of the Apprenticeship Program. For the recent in-take, we have the highest new apprentices, 131 students enrolled in Batch XX, of which 80% come to us from vocational schools and high schools throughout Kalimantan. This is clear demonstration of Thiess Indonesia’s commitment towards education and empowerment of local

communities surrounding our operational areas.” said Seskoadi, Manager Training and Development Centre Balikpapan.

Since 1992, Thiess Indonesia has recruited a large number of vocational school graduates majoring in Technology and high school graduates majoring in Science to enroll in the 5-year Apprenticeship Program. Selected students, chosen through a rigorous selection process, receive classroom training (25%) and on-the-job/field training (75%) at various Thiess Indonesia project sites. On top of no tuition fee, methods and education materials are internationally certified by TAFE Queensland Australia.

At the end of the program, apprentices are automatically eligible for employment at Thiess Indonesia. The Thiess Indonesia Apprenticeship Program was awarded by the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration in 2008 as Best Apprenticeship Program 2007. •

As a company operating in the energy sector, TCI is fully aware of the importance of energy conservation. The Company is continuously adopting practices and developing innovations to cutback on energy waste.

An area where energy conservation is currently being developed is lighting towers. The Company is looking into developing a way to increase efficiency of lighting towers across all Thiess Indonesia sites.

To ensure optimal use of each lighting tower, operational hours will be limited to night time use or about 12 hours per day under normal weather conditions. Currently, all lighting towers are manually operated. Research shows that lighting towers operate an additional one to two hours at each location.

To achieve energy efficiency is difficult, considering limited manpower and the long distance between each lighting tower. Not to mention severe weather conditions, such as heavy rain, and other situations beyond our control that may delay the switching off of lighting towers.

Average fuel consumption for each lighting tower generator is 3.6 liters per hour. With an additional two hours of operation, the Company would have wasted 7.2 liters of diesel per day.

As such, Thiess Indonesia developed an automatic control system which was trialed at three lighting towers (EG1523, EG1524 and EG1525) at the Senakin Site since September 2009. Results show that the automatic control system was able to cut back operational hours to 11.5 to 12 hours per day as desired, compared to the 14 hours when it was manually switched off.

Currently there are 70 22.5 KVA lighting tower units operating across TCI.

The BSF Plant Department will implement automatic control systems on all new lighting towers and gradually install them for lighting towers currently in operation at site.

With this automatic system, TCI is expected to conserve up to approximately 182,000 liters of diesel per year, which translates to a yearly saving of about $34,000 and reduction of 500 tons of carbon dioxide emmission. •

INCO Achieved Safety Record 6 Years LTI Free

On 28 December 2010, Inco Construction Project achieved a record of 6 years without LTI. The success was achieved through employees’ continous contribution to the safety at work. The last LTI at Inco Site was occured in December 2004 when a falling rock hit the leg of our sub-contractor’s excavator operator working for Karebbe Contract.

During the New Year Eve dinner and Safety talk on 3 Jan 2011, Inco Project Manager Azis Rachman

congratulated all team for the safety record and looked forward for another safe year ahead. He also asked all employees to keep on focus on safety with commitment to the Thiess Value: The safety of everyone is foremost in everything we do. As one way to implement the commitment, all team members should give their best to obey all safety procedures applied by TCI as well as client PT Inco.
