Thimble & Thread Quilt Guild of Greater St. Louis Volume 42, No. 4 April 2018
Welcome to Thimble & Thread Quilt Guild
We hope you will join us at one of our monthly meetings, a workshop, a retreat or even a quilt
show. Explore our web site http://www.thimbleandthreadstl.org to see some of the quilt-related
things going on in St. Louis, our Guild and elsewhere.
We meet at Concordia Lutheran Church, 505 South Kirkwood Road at 7:00 pm on the second
Friday of each month, unless changes are announced in the newsletter or on the website.
Doors open at 6:30 pm. Guild meetings are open to non-members, free for the first visit (unless
the program involves a national speaker), and $3 per visit thereafter. A $5 fee is charged
whenever a national speaker gives the program. Membership dues are $30 per year.
A pre-meeting dinner is held at O’Charley’s restaurant, 1242 South Kirkwood Road, starting
between 5:00 and 5:15 pm. If you decide to join us, please let the staff at O’Charley’s know you
are with “the quilters”

QUILTY BUSINESS
With fits and starts, spring is trying to get here. One day icy cold, windy and drear; the next day
it is warmer with sun breaking through the clouds. Soon, dear quilters. Very soon. Then we will
be complaining of the heat and humidity. The outside work in the garden will be pressing and
quilty things will have to wait. But not just yet.
The Bits ‘n’ Pieces quilt show this past weekend was very nice. I ran into lots of people who
asked about our show next year. About the only thing that I could tell them at this point is that
we are planning one, it won’t be at Queeny, and the date will be in March if we can swing it.
Your board is working hard in the background getting things nailed down. Even though it will be
scaled down a bit in size and scope, there will still be tasks that need your helping hands. Most of
all, get crackin’ on those quilts. There is no quilt show without lots of quilts!
My days have been occupied with making tummy time quilts and larger throw quilts for the two
charities we are supporting. Today we took 50+ baby quilts and 14 tote bags to Nurses for
Newborns. They are always beyond thrilled to see us show up.
I have taken a workshop to learn to make Hawaiian quilt blocks by machine. In the past I have
made them by hand (oh dear, did I say the “H” word?). Using the machine is definitely faster but
I am not sure that it feeds my creative need as well as doing them by hand. A quilt for a friend’s
grandson has been started and the piecing is nearly complete. The pattern is “Awesome Ocean”
by Elizabeth Hartmann. A quilt from the 1890s is a constant companion in the evenings; there
are many shredded patches in the venerable old four patch. My neighbor hopes to make it last
another generation. It will, but only as a show piece. It is now far too fragile for taking on a
picnic or using to build a child’s fort.
There are probably half a dozen other things that I pick up and put down as time allows. Knitting
cancer caps for Siteman Center happens as time allows. I hope your hands are busy as we wait
impatiently for spring to happen.
Piece out,
Mary Ellen

PROGRAMS
April 13, 2018, Carol Moellers–International Quilt Instructor & Designer will present a lecture
and trunk show on “Group Quilts”, including two of her award winning group quilts that will
entertain and inspire. She will share her personal journey of making an award winning group
quilt. Also, she will share the strategies and guidelines a group needs to have in place for
making a group contest quilt. Her program is full of tips and valuable information. At the end of
her presentation, you will be inspired to gather up a group of friends to create something
beautiful together and ready to create memories that will last for a lifetime.
Carol’s lecture will include “The Amazing Aztec-nicolor Dream Quilt”. The Amazing Eight,
including guild member Cindy Bell Neville, created this award winning quilt.

May 11, 2018, Auction, with “Kevin the Quilter” as our auctioneer. "Quilting is in Kevin’s
blood. He has been affiliated with quilting since the tender age of 4, having a grandmother that
allowed him to participate in the making of quilts, and two great aunts who encouraged him to
develop his quilting skills. Kevin has been a flight attendant for the past 17 years and
rediscovered quilting as his therapy and passion on long layovers. He is a staunch supporter of
Quilts of Valor, Eastern Missouri, and blogs at www.kevinthequilter.blogspot.com . He revisits
his childhood through his works of art. He is the proud parent of two Boston Terriers, one really
fluffy cat, and a coop full of poultry." Bring your bidding cash/checks to get that special antique
or vintage quilt related item that you’ve been waiting to buy. You’ll certainly want to get
something to turn into an heirloom piece. We have some beautiful vintage
quilts/tops/blocks/fabrics/quilt kits and UFOs. You’ll be amazed! So, you might want to start
saving your $$$ now. Proceeds will be used to defray expenses for bringing in national
speakers.
June 8, 2018, Janine Adams, CPO®, founder of Peace of Mind Organizing LLC, who has
appeared on TV shows such as A&E’s “Hoarders”, TLC’s “Hoarding: Buried Alive”, and
KMOV’s “Great Day St. Louis”, will present her lecture, “More Glitter, Less Clutter”, to help
you figure out how to organize all your quilting supplies to make it easy for you to find what you
need and put items away. She’ll teach you organizing principles that will make it easier for you
to get your quilting space organized and keep it that way so that you can shop from your stash
and put your hands on your supplies whenever you need them. Check out her website →

July 13, 2018, Julie Sefton, a.k.a.“quiltdivajulie”, will present her lecture and trunk show,
“Color Saturated Scrap Quilts”. Learn more here→ http://quiltdivajulie.blogspot.com
August 10, 2018, TBD
September 14, 2018, Rev. William Say will provide information about the “Once We Were
Refugees” project (www.oncewewererefugees.org), background information on the refugees
themselves, and tell us how he and his wife, Ann, got into this project. Ann Say will present
information about their sewing/quilting project and tell individual stories about the refugee
students, using a slideshow presentation.
They do not charge for the program, especially when it is a quilt guild. Instead, they ask that we
donate as we are able from our stashes (cotton or cotton blend fabrics in 1 yard or larger pieces;
thread; and natural fiber batting or insulbright type batting), for the students projects. They
already have a source for polyester batting for the refugee quilts that go back to the camps, but
they make several small projects for sale that require small pieces of batting (off cuts from
making quilts). These are for making items like potholders and microwave bowls, so pieces of
fabric 10 inches square or larger are great!

The meeting was called to order by Mary Ellen Adams at 7:00 p.m.
Our guest speaker Louise Morris was welcomed by Mary Ellen Adams.
Louise is a Thimble and Threads member who shared her “Obsessive Crafter to Quilter” journey.
Louise shared many completed projects that reminded us of our beginning days of quilting. She
has taken many workshops and her use of color and design in her quilts show how diverse she is
and continues of grow and change as a quilter. Louis provided a detailed handout giving a list of
her favorite books, patterns, workshops, websites and products. We are fortunate to have her as a
member of our guild and also value her as a friend.

Optional Block
Inspiration for this month's optional block came in the mail a few months ago. In a clothing
catalog, I saw a dress and immediately imagined using its colors for a quilt block. I especially
loved the juxtaposition of dark and pastel and hope you will too.
Don't forget that I have patterns for blocks from previous months. And for those of you who
bought the "Take Me Away" blue and tan block last time, I hope you will be able to bring the
finished block back in April (you may also send it with someone or mail it to me if you can't
make the meeting). It's so much fun to see the completed blocks come together to form a magical
scrap quilt.

Comfort Quilts – 2017/2018
On Tuesday, March 20th, we (Mary Ellen Adams, Jeanette Oesterly, and I) will deliver to Nurses
for Newborns somewhere between 60 and 70 baby quilts. The latest count is just over 60 and I
might even get the two I have which need bindings done by then. Thanks to everyone who
turned in quilts at the March meeting. I do not have a count on the number of quilts for Home
Sweet Home; I’d like to make a delivery to them sometime in June, so if you are working on
one, please see if you can get it finished by the June meeting.
If anyone still needs labels, please let me know so that I can have sufficient labels at the April
meeting. Yes, I will make it to the April meeting; the knee is doing well and I’ve been released
from home health care so now I can get out and about.
The next scheduled Sew Day at Janie Lou’s is April 19th (10 am to 3 pm). As long as the project
you’re working on is for one of our charities, any project is welcome. Just let me know if you
plan to come as room is limited to 8 people maximum.
As a reminder, Nurses for Newborns baby quilts will be approximately 24” x 36” and Home
Sweet Home quilts will be lap size (4’ x 5’, 5’ x 6’). And quilts must be washed before turning
them in. They need to be smoke free and animal hair free before we take them to the charities.

choose to stay in a Jack and Jill suite please think about who you would want to share the
bathing and toilet accommodations with. I will make every effort to see that it happens. -
Another PRIVATE accommodation is a room with two beds , desk and bathroom. If you
prefer you have this as an option. These rooms are for double occupancy but no one will share it
