Thin Air Bulletin

Message from the President

ASHRAE’s 2015-2016 year is upon us and the board

members of the New Mexico chapter are swinging into

action. Over the Summer we attended the Chapters

Regional Conference (CRC) in Rapid City, South Dakota.

At CRC, the chapters share their successes and failures,

learn best practices, and network with other board

members from around the region. At CRC our chapter

was awarded for chapter performance, contributions to

Research Promotion and we got third place in the man-

mile competition. Overall, we had a successful 2014-

2015 with minimal failures to report and several

successes.

In attendance at CRC was ASHRAE Society President

David Underwood, who gave a talk on his presidential

theme of “Making Connections”. In my opinion, the

best value from ASHRAE is the connections you make

other people. Writing standards, funding cutting edge

research and providing continuing education are

valuable and we must continue to support those goals.

However, without the bonds we build between

members, we will struggle. I suggest you consider your

ASHRAE membership as a tool to building new

relationships and strengthening existing relationships,

in a non-commercial setting.

Chapter Presidents do not traditionally have themes for

their year, but I intend to bring Society President David

Underwood’s theme down to the local level by focusing

on “Making Connections”. It’s hard to connect with

other members when you stay at your office. So I look

forward to seeing you at our chapter meetings and/or

our social events in this coming year.

Message from the President

Continued from page 1

Creating a successful chapter year with compelling

programs, fun social events and superb fundraisers

would not be possible without the involvement of the

whole chapter board. I want to thank each and every

person who volunteers to help continue the work of

this chapter. ASHRAE does not have paid staff at the

local or regional level. Arranging speakers for chapter

meetings, negotiating golf tournament contracts,

updating the website and so much more is done for

free, by our board members. Without hundreds of

hours of labor every year, we would not have an

ASHRAE chapter. One of the best things you can do to

reward our dedicated volunteer board members is

come out to the chapter meetings. Seeing a packed

room at Pappadeaux makes it all worthwhile.

Joseph Higham, PE
