DESCRIPTION

This report takes a look into the patenting activity around thin film batteries uncovering the inventors, the companies and key technologies. Thin film batteries consist of a substrate, electrolyte, current collector, anode, cathode, and a charge separator. The basic difference between thick film and thin film is the method of deposition of the metallization. In thick film, specially formulated pastes are applied and fired onto a substrate. The pastes are usually applied with a silk screen method and the substrate is of 96% alumina ceramic. Thin film technology is used wherever precision resistors are needed. They can be used in various applications such as semiconductor industry, electronic industry, medical devices, aviation, and energy harvesting. This report focuses on how Patent data can help uncover the trends, gaps and opportunities that exist around this area. You will find the information on the research activity, existing & emerging trends in the different technological advancements in thin film batteries. This report was prepared by mining patent data using Patent iNSIGHT Pro, a comprehensive patent analysis platform that helps one accelerate time-to-decision from patent analysis activities.

Thin Film Batteries

Introduction

Thin film batteries are similar to lithium-ion batteries, but they are composed of thin materials, some only nanometers or micrometers thick, which allow the finished battery to be just millimeters thick. These have been developed and advanced for the most part of the last ten years. These can be easily fabricated. They are flexible and non-breakable. Cells or batteries made from thin films can double up as building materials. This report takes a look into the patenting activity around thin film batteries uncovering the key companies, inventors, and different sub categories.

Introduction These batteries consist of a substrate, electrolyte, current collector, anode, cathode, and a charge separator. There has been much research into the determination of the most effective components for this type of battery. It has been shown recently that even ordinary printer paper can be used as a charge separator and a substrate. These thin film batteries are an improvement on the common secondary, or rechargeable, lithium ion batteries in many ways. These batteries exhibit the same voltage and current as their bulky counterparts, but their thinner dimensions allow for greater applications such as making thinner electronic devices, like cell phones and laptops and even implantable medical devices and reducing the weight of common devices that are run on battery power because of the batteries’ high energy density. These batteries can be formed into any shape and they can be stacked, to be used in parallel, thus even further reducing the space needed for a battery. The term “thin film” is derived from the fact that the deposited films are of the order of a few micrometers in thickness compared with the 10 to 50 micrometers for thick film. Often, thin film conductors are plated to improve conductivity. Thin film has the advantages of tighter absolute and ratio tolerances and more environmentally stable components with lower noise and tighter TCR than thick film. Thin-film printing technology is being used to apply solid-state lithium polymers to a variety of substrates to create unique batteries for specialized applications. Thin-film batteries can be deposited directly onto chips or chip packages in any shape or size

The basic distinction between thick film and thin film is the method of deposition of the metallization. In thick film, specially formulated pastes are applied and fired onto a substrate. The pastes are usually applied with a silk screen method and the substrate is of 96% alumina ceramic. Thin film technology is used wherever precision resistors are needed.

Assignees portfolio spread across different types of substrates used

In the map, each company is connected to particular substrate through links whose thickness and color intensity is directly proportional to the number of records relating them. The number (in red) next to each line represents the number of records held by company present in a particular substrate type. It can be seen that silicon and glass substrates are the most used types of substrates. How we did it? Using VizMap, records of top 5 assignees were loaded. These assignees were then analyzed on the basis of different substrate types. The map generated was finally represented as Correlation Map.

Technology Landscape for Thin Film Batteries

The contour map below represents different technologies used in thin film batteries with respect to complete patent portfolio. The nodes were coloured by companies, as can be seen Univ Nankai has presence in most of the technology areas.

How we did it? The VizMAP tool in Patent iNSIGHT Pro was used for this analysis. First the records of top companies were loaded on the map. They were analyzed on basis of their contextual similarity based on title, abstract and claims. We removed unrelated patents using the “Hide Unrelated records” option.

Portfolio trend for prominent companies in thin film batteries The below chart shows filing trends of some companies that are only focused on thin-film batteries.

How we did it? We first created a group for unique companies focusing only on thin film batteries using auto filter option .Using co-occurrence analyzer, we used that group of as data filter and a co-occurrence matrix was generated for those companies with respect to time and a spline chart was generated.

Summary

Thin film batteries reduce the amount of light absorbing material required in creating solar cells.

This can lead to reduced costs in case of silicon thin films and also tend to reduce energy

conversion efficiency. The lifetime of thin-film batteries is potentially very long. Thin-film

batteries combined with energy harvesting can last decades. Longer lasting batteries mean

fewer surgeries, less risk of complications, and better patient outcomes.

These can replace heavy batteries currently being used in cells. And also create biodegradable natural cells or batteries This report talks about the existing & emerging trends in the different technological advancements in thin film battery domain.
