Where is the industry now ?

– BIM 4 SME

– Mostly design based proprietary software, limited use in construction phase, little use in maintenance

– Most haven't used level 2 tools protocol/tools ie COBie etc

– Not aware of interoperability issues

Can we deliver 2 now?

– Almost! If we all used the same software we could probably do level 2.5 but we don’t and wont!!!!

– Still difficult to get COBie outputs from proprietary software.

What next

– Software vendors can develop tools to give COBie outputs – YES

– But by having COBie etc does fix interoperability issues

• What about common dictionaries?• Software not speaking to each other• Shared collaboration spaces• Limitations of COBie move to IFC• Information delivery requirements

Move to level 3

– IDM:– Information Delivery Manuals– Types of information required in at points in a process

– IFD:– International Framework for Dictionaries– Data Dictionary

Benefits of going to level 3

Need to explain convince people why we need open iBIM-Information provided not at given snapshot in time ie data drops - ie historic/live/future-Use of data/model in construction phase and most importantly real time for FM-Fully integrated supply chain-Improved interoperability

BuildingSMART & open BIM

– BuildingSMART: a community of people and organisations who are working with open-BIM & sharing their experiences

– Working with government & industry to develop standards, tools and training to ensure that open BIM is used effectively

– We created the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard and building data dictionary & are leading the development and roll out of COBie in the UK

Who is behind BuildingSMART?

– We are a part of the international BuildingSMART programme, with representation across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Far East & Australasia.

– BRE taken control from Jan 13, because we have a background in driving positive change through programmes such as

GovernBIM

–Emphasises heavily upon the integration of data transfer and management in the Cloud

–Will be created using existing cloud technologies and tested in a real business environment

–Deliverable is a system that manages data stored on a cloud in an effective manner and allows for a controlled project environment for the end-user

Clouds-for-Coordination

– Building Regulations AD, Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM to be automatically checked

– Procedure to be carried out:– Extracting data requirements and logical

relationship– Translate the above in to a language

understandable off-shelf- rules engine– Integrate rule engine to allow for information

retrieval from the BIM– Validation against original requirements

– Deliverable is a rule engine (software) that carried out the checks for the regulations automatically

TSB RegBIM

– Using Building Information Modelling (BIM) approaches we will control (and therefore reduce) energy performance of buildings via a building the loop simulation/visualisation environment, that monitors the buildings energy usage and allows control in a real time basis.

– Energy saving through intelligent energy management by: – Systematic avoidance of energy wasting in buildings– knowledge-based holistic optimization of energy

consumption
