Mountaineering Expedition to theFriendship Peak (17,676 Feet)

We, a group of 14 students and 2 teachers , undertook an expedition to the Friendship Peak during the summer break. The journey began on June 2 and our first halt was at Manali. The next day, we began with an acclimatizing trekof 15 kilometers to a nearby hill and the following day stayed at a place called Dhundi. The next day we trekked to Lady Led, which was our Base Camp at an altitude of 12,370 feet. In the evening, we were issued our equipment which included an ice axe, crampon, gator, carabineer, seat harness and rope. For the next two days, we all underwent rigorous training in snow. Subsequently, we were divided into 2 teams. One team would summit the peak from the Advanced Base Camp at 14000 feet and other would try it from the Base Camp. The next morning, after a light breakfast, webegan our final trek. Hardwork, perseverance and determination does pay off! Five students accompanied by one teacher

and reached the summit.The next day we reached back Dhundi and then by cars to Manali and, finally, returned to Patiala carrying sweets, gifts and a lot of memories with us.

The other members of the group were-

and

• To be away from gadgets, internet and learn to stay without them. To adjust ourselves according to the situations.To strengthen the bond between friends.To be independent.To help each other in times of need.To be patientTo keep the team spirit and the camaraderie goingNot to give upTo feel closer to Mother Nature, enjoy and explore her beauty.

If there are two imperiously difficult tasks one could possibly be faced with, they have got to be – a) Getting a US Visa for a 15 day tour, and b) Then being asked to put all the experiences of those 15 days into a teeny-weeny one-page write-up. It is good enough I managed the first feat. But now I have been tasked with the second too. Well, enough with the whining; I better get down to it.To all the number-crunchers: It was a 15 day trip, with 15 students accompanied by 1 teacher flying across the face of the 4 largest country in the world, covering a total of 6 cities on their 2 tiny feet that were sorely bruised and blistered by the time they whiffed Indian soil again. Phew! This was the easy part. Now that the usual numbers are out of the way, it's time to get down to business – What did we do for a fortnight in the US? And more importantly, what is it that we observed? To answer the first question, I am understating it when I say we did A LOT of stuff. A walking tour of the Big Apple, countless crazy rides in the Universal

Studios and the Sea World in Orlando, landing in the temple of world power – Washington DC, a trip to Disneyland in Los Angeles, a late night walk on the streets of Las Vegas, mulling jumping from the top of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco (just joking) and more – that surely is a lot. Needless to say, the fun quotient never dipped throughout the course of the fortnight.Well, now let's talk of observations. Those of you who are expecting answers like awesome cars, colossal shopping malls, and neck-numbingly tall buildings – you aren't wrong. All of us saw all that stuff. And we were just as mesmerized by it as anyone who pays a visit to the US would be. After all, it isn't for nothing that crowds of tourists throng the States like no other country ever is.But of course, there is more to the States than those few things. On a personal level, as someone travelling from the world's largest democracy to the world's biggest democracy, I had my own little ideas of what lay there in that beacon of dominance in the West. And in all due fairness, I wasn't disappointed. Be it the hustle and bustle of Downtown Manhattan, the awe-inspiring magnificence of the Niagara Falls or the laidback ease of the San Francisco life, everything was a celebration of one phrase we have probably heard a million times over – the American Dream. Every activity on display was a vindication of Thomas Jefferson's visionary pillar of Independence – the Pursuit of Happiness. And that probably answers the question of where India falls short in its bid to replicate the Western, and in particular, the American model.Now if there is one question I have been pestered with so many times, it is about what stood out for me in the whole tour. But there are so many fond memories of the tour for me that it is next to impossible to pick a highlight out of all of them – quizzing our guide in Washington DC (a worker with the Democratic Party, mind you) about the Trump phenomenon, seeing New York spread out in front of us from the top of the Empire State Building, feeling the mist of the Niagara Falls on our

// June-July-August3

faces as our boat moved about in its cradle, all of them are stand-out moments of our trip to the States. And cherry-picking one particular memory from amongst all of these would be so unfair to the rest of them. When you dream a good dream, you don't worry about what part of it was good; you just get up with that happy feeling, that sense of fulfillment in the morning. That is what this trip and its memories are for us – a dream that was amazing as long as it lasted, and which gave us that sense of happiness when we woke up to the reality of coming back to our homeland. I sense I am getting much too close to my word limit. And so, to sum it up, the tour for all 16 of us was about enjoying ourselves in our own way as we saw America up close. Some enjoyed themselves by seeing pieces from the Moon in the Smithsonian Institution; others had fun scouring for collectibles in its souvenir shop. Some had fun clicking pictures to take back as souvenirs; others managed to great deals on expensive perfumes to take back home. Some chose to brush up their knowledge of the Golden Gate Bridge by reading the information panels; others had fun wondering why it is even called Golden when it is painted red all over. The tour, like I said, was about enjoying ourselves in every possible manner. And that we sure did, taking back memories that I am sure will be cherished for a lifetime.

has been at the wrong end of an unfortunate faux pas. And her high-decibel morning assembly announcements seem to reek of revenge! So, YPS fraternity, please take note: her surname is Shergill and not Walia (Mrs. Ravneet Walia is a Junior School staff member). Ma'am, amends made!!The corridors of the school seem strangely deserted these days. In addition, class XII Arts seems to have more school bags than it has ever had. Seems like change is in the air!Rumour has it that incessant coughing has only one student to blame. Apparently, Param Angad Singh of Class XII Arts offered her some Pulse (a new toffee that is the craze of the town), and Simrat Maam's throat didn't take too well to it. Well, people, don't be surprised if Param Angad doesn't score well in Sociology in the upcoming exams!!

BOOK REVIEW

// June-July-August8

This name has, in a way, shaken the world of the children…and of some adults alike ! 'Pokemon Go' developed by Niantic Lab is a reality game which helps us find Pokemons in the real world. It lets the players roam the real world to find "Poke Stops" stocked with supplies and hunt Pokemon. Players can also visit'gyms"" where Pokemons can be trained.Just within a few days of its launch, it has grown to become one of most downloaded apps in the world.Even though it has not been officially launched in India ,half of the nation has found a way to download it.The game is very interesting as we travel between

'Pokemon Go'…Yes or No !?? the real and the virtual world.If it is night in reality, the same is in our game. At the same time, finding Pokemons at all weird places is quite funny…and amusing !But the game is not without its share of pitfalls. if one is careless, the game can land one in trouble.Since the very first week of its release ,it has been in the news for wrong reasons too-one among them being leading to accidents.In one instance, a boy actually got stuck in a tree as he was trying to find Pokemon.So, enjoy this unbelievable game, but be careful while you play.
