Coaching Millennials

Warren started Coaching Millennials in response to an overwhelming demand by companies to help hire

and manage Millennials. For 5-years, he partnered with economist and historian Neil Howe, the best-selling author

on today’s generations, who gave Millennials their name.

Working with Howe underscored the power of generations in today’s society, and their ability to shape culture, society,

and workplaces in their own image. Yet too few people recognizethisinfluence.Recognizingthisdisconnect,

Warren seeks to educate, teach, and coach leaders about Millennials and all generations. He consults and speaks frequentlyontheinfluenceoftheMillennialgeneration.

Warren has been solving problems for clients for over 25 years with a who’s who of top performing organizations:

U.S. Army, Navy SEALs, World Bank, World Economic Forum, Knight Foundation, FEMA, Proctor & Gamble,

Chubb Insurance, and American Airlines to name a few.

He spent 10-years at Gallup, leading innovation projects and before that was a principal and co-founder at the

internetstartup,Jobfinder.com.HelivesintheWashingtonDC area and is the father of two adult Millennials.

People Making the Difference

Last year I ended my remarks at ABCD’s Annual Meeting with a simple message - this is the right place, at the right time – let’s all think big. Since then, so many people have not only thought big, they went big. They planned big. They invested big.

ABCD Corporation took part in 30 business development projects in 2017 resulting in

more than $35 million of new capital investment. These projects collectively created 180 new jobs and retained over 600 jobs here in the nation’s First Frontier-Blair County, PA.

Among those projects were three new hotels, including the first new lodging property in downtown in more than half a century. Central States launched their manufacturing operations. Sheetz announced the expansion of a new operations center and expansion of their distribution facility. A new coffee shop, brewery and several boutique retailers have also opened in Altoona’s Central Business district within the last several months. A new 20 room market rate housing development at the Elizabeth Apartment building is expected to come online later this year.

While the decision was made earlier this year, 2017 was the year of robust debate about whether to build or renovate Altoona’s

high school building. The vote to approve the construction of a new $88 million facility will result in the largest single capital building investment in the history of the City. Several other major expansion projects are currently in the planning stages and will impact 2018 in a big way.

Behind all of these projects and the numbers that we use to measure them, are people. People from both the public and private sectors are stepping up and making change happen – making a difference. They are shouting from our mountain tops that we are “all in” on our community’s future success, our competitiveness, the smarts and hearts of our kids, and their kids, and our ability to attract new business investment, and talent. Their decisions to invest said a lot and none of it was about living the past.

So, this is something I don’t mind repeating – We all are in the right place, at the right time – let’s all think big. Plan big. Invest big. Let’s continue to do great things for future generations to come!

With Best Personal Regards,

Thinking Big for Blair County, PA

The Alexander A. Notopoulos Award was created as a tribute to Attorney Notopoulos for his many years of dedicated service to the Altoona/Blair County area. This award was designed to acknowledge outstanding business firms in Blair County. Potential recipients must meet a set of criteria and are then voted on by the Altoona Blair County Development Corp.’s Awards Committee.

The Awards Committee, Board of Directors and staff of the Altoona-Blair County Development Corp. congratulate Shirley’s Cookie Company on this well deserved award. The criteria and the qualifications of this year’s recipient are outlined below.

…..SuBSTaNTIaL BuSINESS HISTORY IN BLaIR COuNTY

It all began with a Donut, at a small diner run by a woman named Shirley. Fresh out of high school young Zane Feathers worked for Shirley and Les and recognized the popularity of the donuts baked daily to a growing demand from the locals craving sweet treats. In addition to working at the diner, Zane continued by going door to door selling delicious baked goods. Upon Shirley’s retirement in 1967, he purchased the diner and decided to lease a small bakery allowing his entrepreneurial spirit to unfold.

1969, the diner introduced raisin filled cookies to the menu. Zane escalated the growth and began to prepare his baked goods for wholesale establishments. His daughter Patty Shaw joined him in 1990 and established the new corporation known as Shirley’s Cookie Company. They worked together to develop the NEW retail concept from a finished cookie to a frozen-thaw product ready for in store bakeries and food service companies. This decision propelled them to establish a plant in Claysburg, PA.

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony December 2003 opened the doors to the manufacturing location and state-of-the-art bakery producing the finest baked goods from coast to coast. Yet another opportunity in 2011, supported a factory expansion to the existing Claysburg site, affording Shirley’s Cookies continued growth to be an ever-evolving Bakery leader providing private label products to convenience stores and grocery chains nationally.

…..GROWTH IN EMPLOYMENT LEVELS IN BLaIR COuNTY

From a small diner to a substantial food manufacturing firm in rural Claysburg, Shirley’s Cookies had only a handful of employees as a humble diner beginning. With vision, Christian values and motivation to succeed, a few positions evolved into over one hundred and thirty-five jobs over the course of 6 decades in Blair County. The bakery has employed folks from youth to retirement in many cases, with several generations of family employed in our company.

…..a DEMONSTRaTED SENSE Of COMMuNITY INVOLVEMENT

Shirley’s Cookies has undergone so many changes from the humble start of the original donut shop. Patrons understood what tradition meant and what family meant. The bakery was a place to share life stories and meet with friends over a sweet treat. The same philosophy holds true today. It was that community spirit, helping others, and a sense of volunteering that their Christian based morals had instilled as an important ingredient to the daily recipe with employees, community and family. Many local agencies, church groups, non-profit organizations, community programs and schools too many to name have reached out and they have gladly responded with a smile. Serve your community by giving back is a motto they live by at Shirley’s Cookies.

…..PROVIDE faMILY SuSTaINaBLE INCOME

Employees are the key “ingredient” in the success of the Shirley’s Cookies. They offer a full time 40 hour work week employment to our employees. In addition, they have prided themselves in supporting the employees with a substantial insurance coverage plan to afford themselves and their families access to proper healthcare. They offer training and internal development opportunities to promote a career future from entry level on up. They look forward to a bright future.

“Shirley’s Cookies and our employees are honored to receive the 2017 Alexander A. Notopoulos Award. Our family and ABCD Corporation have a “sweet” history that has been key to both of our successes. Just as a family tradition continues, so will the work, goals and dedication to our community, county and employees at Shirley’s Cookies. We thank the Altoona Blair County Development Corporation for sharing their traditions of making Blair County a more desirable place to live and work.” Patty Shaw, CEO
