  • Look at these photos of Mrs. Poe’s class at The Children's Museum. They attended an awards

presentation for Greenville businesses. At this press conference, The Children's Museum was given the

LEED certification, designating the site as an official “green” building.

The VP of the museum talked to the class about the Children’s Museums’ efforts to be “green” and the

things children can do in their own school and home to be better stewards of our natural resources.

Students drew pictures of "ways to help the earth" and were able to present them to the people that

helped the Children's Museum become certified. How cool!

    Students learn basic

    “orienteering skills” with a

    compass and the staff.

    Students work together to

    learn “seine” or “net”

    fishing.

    Great Job this year, Kids!

Volunteers are needed in many areas for

service next school year with the PTA.

    Many of these opportunities are

    COMPLETELY “behind the scenes.” Please

feel free to sign up at the next PTA

meeting, or let your child’s teacher know

you’re interested in helping. For instance,

we need someone to gather and deliver

    “Reflections” entries. We also need

volunteers to help in almost every other

area. Don’t worry – we have a place for

    you! You may also email

    [email protected] to volunteer.

  • Please send YOUR photos to [email protected] We’ll include them if there’s space.

Dear Mrs. Gerhiser and Mrs. Smith: – we will miss you here at Paris. You have been a part of the Paris Panther family for SO long. We wish you the best in retirement and we want you to know that We’ll always have a place in our hearts for you both. . . . . Students, Staff & Faculty. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

  • Hello Paris Families!

It is almost summertime! Together, we have had an eventful and productive year and we have accomplished

so much! We could not have done it without all of your support, time, energy and enthusiasm! Many hands

have worked many hours this year to help our children! Our teachers and staff are very appreciative for the

    tremendous support our PTA provides.

We just finished a great Young Author’s week. The children had an enriching week thanks to organizers Mary

Jane Giordarno, Janelle Ward, and Michelle Shaw. The Used Book Fair was a success thanks to all of the

parents who sent in books and volunteers who organized. I’d like to give special thanks to Julie Mathis, Emily

Bridwell and Kristen Zettlemoyer. This event brought a wide variety of “gently used” books to many children.

I would like to thank a special person who has generously provided all of our professionally-made signs over

the years. Heather Kolodziejski has been asked to do countless signs for our school and she has never once

said “no!” I think we are all grateful to her for her generosity, time, and willingness to help. Our signs make

    us look professional!

We still have many fun things ahead in May and June. Science is Fun Day is May 25th - where the entire day

is spent learning and doing fun things with science! The fourth and fifth graders who have met their yearly

AR goals will have an AR celebration on May 27th

. Thanks to the organization of Kristen Carlton, a new

tradition for 5th graders will begin this year. Paris PTA is planning an afternoon at Otter Creek Waterpark at

Northside Park on June 1 from 1:00-3:00pm. Fifth graders should have received an information letter about

this fun event. Thanks to all of you who have offered to serve in some capacity with PTA next year. We have

a great group of volunteers. If you would like to become involved, it’s not too late - please let us know! We

still have many positions to fill.

We are excited that our very own Principal, David Wise, was honored with the SC PTA Principal of the Year

Award! This is a tremendous accomplishment and honor. We as a PTA are very proud of him. You probably

hear it all the time, but Paris is a special place! Our children are blessed with receiving a great education in a

loving environment each and every day. Not all children are so lucky! The reason it is so special is simple –

it’s the people! The administration, the faculty, the staff, the parents and the children are second to none.

Paris Elementary is a special place, a special school.

Our last PTA meeting was on Monday, May 16th

. Light refreshments were served and we welcomed our

rising K5 students and congratulated our Reflections winners at this meeting.

Thanks to all of you for a great year! There are many thankless jobs that need to be done each year in PTA

and they are done at Paris very quietly and effectively. I thank each and every one of you and wish the best to

all of you 5th grade families who will be saying goodbye to Paris. I would like to give a huge and genuine

thanks to Kristen Carlton for serving with me as PTA Co-President for the past year! You have made my job

this year all the more enjoyable and I truly thank you!

I cannot thank everyone at Paris enough for making my time as Co-President so fun and rewarding. It is with

great pride that I sign off as your PTA Co-President. Have a great summer! - - - - - Lori Madeline

WISE WORDS, continued from front cover

    • Check out a book about a place you will visit or an animal before visiting the zoo. Learn important facts, organize information on charts, and draw maps.

    • Make a prediction or set a limit on what you will spend on a trip to the store. Have your child add as you shop and tell you how you are doing on your prediction/limit.

    • Use flash cards to practice or learn facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division (whichever is appropriate for your child’s grade). Use a stop watch to turn it into a game. Together, graph or chart progress. Offer rewards. Do math problems in the car. Make it fun and challenging.

    • Learn about your family tree. Listen to stories from grandparents and elderly family members. Learn more about what else happened in their younger days.

    • Take a walk in the woods or by a stream or lake. Slow down and see what you can find. Answer your child’s questions. Get books from the library about things that interested them. These are a few ideas but there are many more, limited only by your imagination! Whatever you do, encourage your child to keep learning this summer and stay in mental shape! Your attitude towards learning is what will make the

    difference! Have a great summer!

    CONGRATULATIONS MR. WISE,

    SOUTH CAROLINA PTA

    PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR!!!

Paris Elementary PTA is proud of the winner of

the South Carolina PTA Principal of the Year

Award! He is our principal, Mr. David Wise! We

would like to congratulate him and also thank

him for always going above and beyond the

call of duty each and every day. He is truly

dedicated to not only improving academic

standards but also maintaining the family

atmosphere at Paris where children and parents

alike are welcome in the school. His kindness

and concern for each of the students is evident.

We are lucky to have him!

    NO VACATION FROM LEARNING

Summer is just around the corner and students (and teachers) are ready for the break. Many dream of hot days, cool water, free time, and, though it pains me to say it, no school! Parents, students, and teachers have all worked hard to insure learning occurred. Great gains have been made in achievement, and we look forward to seeing our progress on PASS scores. Summer, however, is not a time to take a vacation from learning. Students will forget a lot of what they have learned if they are not using it over the summer. Just as athletes need to stay in physical shape, learners need to stay in mental shape. That is not to say that your children must sit at a desk, work math problems from a book, or curl up with an encyclopedia – although each of those activities have their benefits. Make learning fun for your child and you will see even greater progress next year! Here are just a few ideas:

    • Have your child participate in the CompassLearning and Reading incentive programs this summer. Look for the information to come home before the end of the year.

    • Visit the library at least once a week and encourage your children to check out books, not just videos.

    • Offer prizes for reading a certain number of pages. Be ready to quiz them to make sure they are reading the pages. Learning to read better is only accomplished through practice.

    • Check out two copies of the same book. Read the book as your child is reading it. Ask each other questions and discuss the story. Use a lot of “why” questions.
