THE OFFICIAL STUDENT PUBLICATION OF LA SALLE GREEN HILLS – ADULT NIGHT HIGH SCHOOL
The Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Department was hailed as the over-all champion during the ANHS Sports Fest 2019 held on the 16th
and 17th of December. Grade 11 ranked as the 1st Runner-up followed by Grade 12 as the 2nd Runner-up.
The annual event started off with the parade of players who were wearing their assigned colored shirts. Then the activity was officially culminated through a
short program at the St. Benilde Gym prepared and organized by the Student Council headed by Mrs. Ma. Leila P. Cayetano. Teams and individual players from respec-
tive grade levels had shown their competitiveness while maintaining sportsmanship and fun at the various indoor and outdoor games such as arm wrestling, chess,
badminton, 100-meter relay, tug of war, volleyball and basketball. True camaraderie and friendship were amplified among the students from different grade levels.
TVET department bagged a total of 5 gold medals out of 11 games specifically in arm wrestling men’s category, women’s arm wrestling, chess women’s catego-
ry, badminton singles—men, and badminton singles—women. They also got the silver medal for badminton mixed doubles, and another silver in basketball. Mean-
while, they got the bronze for chess men’s category and another bronze for volleyball.
The Grade 12 team got the gold medals for badminton mixed double, tug of war and 4x100 meter relay.
The Grade 11 team was the champion in volleyball while the Grade 10 got the gold in basketball defeating TVET.
Grade 9 was awarded gold for chess men’s category.
This year’s Most Valuable Players were also named as they displayed their impressive ability to play with
competence and proper attitude in the games. Mark Gil C. Bayaban from Grade 11A was declared as the MVP for
volleyball and Andrei Anthony C. Antonio from Grade 10 was the MVP for basketball.
When asked about the lessons he learned, he uttered “Natutunan ko
nyo.”

OPINION
CORPORAL PUNISHMENT FOR ADULT NIGHT LEARNERS
Corporal punishment has long been a topic for dispute among students, parents, psychologists, and educational experts. The teaching strategies and class-room management of educators have been changing and being remodeled for the 21st Century learners. Likewise, awareness of the law makes the teachers more cau-tious and deliberately careful in imposing discipline inside the classroom even for the rudest, most disrespectful and uncooperative students. This issue had been placed idle somehow until a famous TV show, which seemingly offers an instant justice to the oppressed, popularized a case against a teacher who was accused of humiliating and crossed the line in punishing her student for allegedly not returning his report card on time. This caused fire over the inter-net and different opinions were blasted online through memes and personal posts. The older generations, who claimed to experience corporal punishments from their teachers in elementary and high school, laughed at those people who are taking it sensitively. They testified that despite considering it as harsh, it made them more re-sponsible, disciplined, focused on their goals, and even created the best version of themselves. Hence, claiming that they are thankful of it and that it led them to the right direction. Standing at the other side of the fence, we understand the value and impact of implementing discipline the hard way. But as adult learners, this kind of punishment is neither giving us positive reinforcement nor motivation but rather humiliation and low self-esteem. We are adults and most of us have gone through violence, discrimination, physical and emotional abuse from our families and other people. Therefore, experiencing the same inside the classroom will not help but harm us. It would cause fear and anxiety everytime we enter the classroom which could affect our willingness to learn and improve ourselves. We accept punishment but not physical and verbal abuse. You can ‘punish’ us by giving us an extra work. We would also understand if we would be suspended for committing mis-takes or violating school rules. Punishing students like taking them to the principal’s office without harming them physically is an appropri-ate measure of discipline for us. Talking to them with decency and control instead of cursing and uttering profane words will help us ac-cept our mistakes fully. Nowadays, students are getting more and more sensitive by the minute so a little wrong action can cause chaos. Teachers should know their students deeply so that they could understand the roots of their misbehavior and irrational conducts. Significantly, we somehow realized that we have been blessed for being a part of the ANHS community. So far, we haven’t experienced any physical abuse and our teachers and administrators are handling our behaviors rationally. They are consistent in honing our skills and making the best out of ourselves for our own sake.

149 SHS-TVL and TVET students complete
their OJT in Cebu City
149 SHS-TVL and TVET students including thirteen Deaf learners participated in this
year’s shipboard training in partnership with 2Go Group Inc. and Mariana Academy of Maritime
Studies, Inc. with route Manila-Cebu-Manila via 2Go’s M/V St. Francis Xavier on November 22-25,
2019.
The said program was organized by Mr. Kent Alfred E. San Felipe, ANHS Administrative
Affairs Coordinator, who thoroughly guided the students from preparation of documents, orienta-
tion on standard operating procedures, actual on-the-job-training and documentation. They were
also assisted by their TVET trainers, Mr. Dan Emil C. Haz, Mrs. Ma. Judith S. Desiderio, Mrs. Rose-
marie L. Guansing, and Mrs. Mercedes B. Andrade. According to Mr. San Felipe, the program aims
to provide opportunity for students to hone their skills and utilize their learnings and more im-
portantly develop their confidence by exposing them in an authentic learning environment.
Indeed, students were given the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills that they
have learned from their courses particularly in food and beverages, cookery, and hotel and restau-
rant management. The program serves as an eye-opener to the students in which they could see
how challenging it would be when they are already in their chosen field of work or career.
John Ray R. Tupaz of 12D-TVL shares his reflection about his experiences.
“Wow, what can I say regarding immersion? You have to be there above all to really com-
prehend what a life-changing experience it is. There is no difficult thing for a person who is inspired
and goal-driven. . During the immersion or on-the-job training, I was inspired to work hard and try
to scrutinize everything that I haven’t experienced yet in life. For me, there was no difficulty in the
workplace because we were all enjoying the training. Being a leader of our group brought me a
sense of honor, pride, and confidence as we execute our expertise in serving and protecting the pas-
sengers. We got these skills from our the trainers and educators of our Alma Mater, La Salle Green
Hills—Adult Night High School.
One of the most rewarding learnings I acquired from my experience that I could possibly
use in the future is valuing time, acceptance and most especially respect to others. We learned to
share our time to others because we value and respect their beliefs and principles in life including
our groupmates, co-workers, trainers, the head of the company and most especially the guests or
clients. Always give your best shot and wear your great smile. Present yourself without hesitating
to take that opportunity to learn and hone your skills in every workplace. Talk to them with sincere
eyes and genuinely listen to the problem
that the guests or clients raise in order to
address them more effectively and effi-
ciently. Furthermore, love them even if
they become impatient and irrational.
Always bear in mind that you are doing
this job for their safety.
We should also know the value
of self-reliance but more importantly the
essence of teamwork. You just have to
understand how to operate within a group
and recognize individual weaknesses and
strengths . Hence, this will make you a
team-player and a good leader at the same
time.”

ALON is a documentary about plastic waste and how it affects the people in their everyday lives. This is a project of
De La Salle—College of St. Benilde under the direction of Mr. Gabby Fernandez. Seeing as how the Philippines is the 3rd larg-
est contributor to ocean plastic waste, the real question is how and why the Philippines, being a small country can contribute
such great damage to the ocean? ALON focused on answering these questions. The documentary tackles single use plastics,
segregation and the surfers who are also known as the eco-warriors because they stand guard of the ocean as their
“playground.”
What ALON offers is the opportunity to realize that whatever we do, even the simplest things in life, can affect the
lives of different people. How one acts can ruin the very nature that gives us life. A single use plastic that can't be recycled
goes to the ocean and rides the wave with the surfers. Straws, disposable utensils, plastic to carry one piece of bread—“do we
really need those?” That’s the question posed by the documentary. It is really problematic because you can't take away plas-
tic from our lives but the documentary offers small insights as to how we can reduce and change our mentality to help not
only ourselves but also the nature and the life that it is giving to humans and animals.
ALON is a must see documentary because it is well-thought-out of. From the locations and the interviewees, even
going to the real problematic areas themselves just to deliver as what I call a “quality “ content. Technically speaking, the
documentary was exquisite, it was timely made seeing as how the Philippines is really facing issues when it comes to gar-
bage/waste.
ALON is not only a documentary but an eye opener, it serves and provides us a guide as well as a time to reflect as
human beings. The documentary opens the mind and really touches the heart of the viewer. Once you see the film, you your-
self would ask if what you have done for the environment is good enough. The film would make you wonder if you have
truly done your part. I give this film a rating of 10/10 and I would recommend for everyone to watch.

Over 300 students from different schools nationwide
gathered at the Communication Foundation for Asia in Sta. Me-

critical awareness as media consumer-producers. The Spoof
Ads purports to rouse the sleeping-minds of the students in the
age of post-truth. Lies, propaganda, bamboozle and misleading
information flood the society online with this "fake news" build-
ing tons of toxic content system. The event deals to access, ana-
lyze, evaluate and understand media texts in order to warn peo-
ple to take off the 'sources' they engage themselves in their daily
