As response to socialist modernisation construction and Open-up policy, Tianjin, the former ‘hyper-colonial’city and the most politically complex treaty port in China, has been undergoing a series of urbantransformation since its liberation in 1949 to cover the former branding with new layers of identities. Thethesis will examine the transformation of Minyuan Stadium in Five Avenues area in the former BritishConcession of Tianjin, with a particular interest on the in-between ‘third space’ where the top-down formingand bottom-up using of space can meet and negotiate by spatial production or appropriation respectively. The time focus is from 2004 to 2020, when the transformation process was accelerated by the typicalgovernment-led redevelopment with the rebranding of this area as cultural tourism district, leading to thetrend of total westernisation in architectural representation, spectacular nature in built environment andgentrification in lifestyle. Through the Minyuan Stadium renovation project, the thesis intends tounderstand the regeneration model of Five Avenues and its postrun outcomes, and link them to thefabrication of post-concession identities of the city.
