TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Your God will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals (Zephaniah 3:14-18a). Psalm — Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and Holy One of Israel (Isaiah 12:6). Second Reading — Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! (Philippians 4:4-7). Gospel — Whoever who has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. Whoever who has food should do likewise (Luke 3:10-18).

Question of the Week:

Fr. Gerard’s Corner John the Baptist’s responses to the crowd (“Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.”) recall Matthew’s story of the Last Judgment (“I was hungry and you gave me food . . . naked and you clothed me” [Luke 3:11, Matthew 25:35–36]). Notice that Jesus takes it one step further. Now it is not just a random person, but Jesus specifically, whom we are helping in our plenty. But it was John who laid the groundwork. It was John who was asked three times, “What should we do?” It was John who told them, even before Christ began his mission, how to act like a Christian.

Speaking of the Last Judgment, John’s image of the wheat and the chaff is a sobering one. The wheat will be gathered in the barn, “but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire” (Luke 3:17). The wheat is valuable. Once it is ground or milled, it can nourish us. It contains the seed, so that it can be planted and grown. It can be shared with others. The chaff cannot be grown or eaten or shared. Once removed from the grain, it is virtually of no use. John calls us to nourish, to grow, and to share, like the grain that has fed the world for thousands of years.

“Shout for joy,” “Cry out with joy,” “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Zephaniah 3:14, Isaiah 12:6, Philippians 4:4). The readings and the psalm response each begin with exultation. No wonder this Sunday is referred to as Gaudete Sunday. The reason for the joy is simple: “God is in your midst;” “among you is the great and Holy One;” “The Lord is near” (Zephaniah 3:17, Isaiah 12:6, Philippians 4:5). Rejoice always, indeed. Fr. Gerard

Stewardship Reflection We have arrived at Gaudete Sunday (Gaudete is the Latin word for “rejoice”) this Third Week of Advent, and the Scriptures take on a joyful tone as we continue our preparations for the feast of our Savior’s birth.

Our Second Reading gives us cause for joy as St Paul reminds us, “The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all….” Then he gives us a prescription for maintaining this peace: “In everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Paul’s instructions for obtaining peace come as an early Christmas gift. They remind us that we can and should go to God with all our needs and present them to Him along with our thanks. This guidance calls to mind a vital aspect of a stewardship way of life: gratitude to God in response to His great love and countless gifts to us.

The Gospel passage, from Luke, shows us how to live out this thanks, making our lives a “Christmas gift” to Christ in joyful response to His love for us. When the crowds hear John the Baptist’s message that their Savior is coming, they ask him what they should do to prepare. He responds, “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do the same.” He tells tax collectors to stop collecting more than is prescribed and soldiers, to be satisfied with their wages. In other words, he tells them to be good and generous stewards of all God’s gifts to them!

As the great feast of Christmas draws near, let us rejoice in Christ’s extravagant love. Let’s avail ourselves of the peace He longs to give us. And let’s look carefully at our lives to make sure we are indeed making of them a gift fitting for Him.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Years ago, the trick question on religion quizzes would be to name all the liturgical colors, or the colors of the vest-ments worn at Mass. Rose is a color seldom seen, used at most two days a year. Today, “Gaudete Sunday,” is one of those days. The name of the day is drawn from an opening verse in the old Latin Mass texts: Gaudete is Latin for “Rejoice!” This year’s Gospel certainly reflects that mood as Elizabeth feels her infant within her leaping for joy at the presence of Mary. Mary’s visit to her aged cousin is an act of compassion between women, as two kinswomen who are bearing children into the world share their joy.

Some churches retain the custom of having the priest wear rose vestments today, and many will use a rose candle in the Advent wreath. Violet is the official color for Advent and Lent, but many parishes employ different hues for each season, trying to keep them distinct. In medieval times, dye was costly, and poor parishes used unornamented plain cloth for vestments. Dyes were expensive and some colors, particularly purple, difficult to achieve. In England, purple dye was made from mollusks, yielding at best a deep indigo or blue and not the desired violet. Thus, the col-or of Advent in the British Isles has long been a deep blue, reminding many people of Mary’s presence at the heart of the Advent mystery. That theology is largely unplanned: it’s all because of the clams!

. . estuve desnudo y me vistieron” [Lucas 3,11, Mateo 25, 35–36]).

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as

well as formation to ministry in the training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
