My dear Parishioners,

There is a lot going on for all of us this time of year. I hope you are able to enjoy yourselves even in the midst of the busyness. Christmas is just a couple of weeks away and the parish is

preparing for a wonderful Christmas weekend. Every time I walk into the Church one of our several choirs are practicing. Mary Bolan, our music director, has the adult choir and they all give so generously of their time. They will be singing at the 10:00 P.M. Christmas Eve Mass, with a Christmas concert immediately before the Mass. Please consider joining us, you will not regret it. Earlier that night, Marilyn McClean will be leading one of our two youth choirs at the 4:00 P.M. family Mass. Marilyn’s choir will have a 30 minute Christmas presentation immedi-ately prior to the 4:00 P.M. Mass. The younger children will also present the Christmas pageant during the homily part of the Mass. The Sunday before Christmas, “next week,” December 18th, Erica Marquardt’s youth band will present a preview to Christmas at the 9:30 A.M. Family Mass. This will help us prepare for the true meaning of Christmas, which will only be a few days away. Please remember to keep the true meaning of Christmas in everything you do. The birth of our Savior Jesus Christ has changed the world!

Christmas CardsI have been asking for several weeks now to send the parish a Christmas card so we can display the cards in the hallway of the Church. Many have responded, thank you! But we are asking that everyone send a card. Let’s make it a collective effort. This is a good way for all of us to participate in the spirit of Christmas for our parish.

Christmas Confessions! This coming Wednesday night we will have confessions available from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. in the Church. The Christmas season is a peace filled season. This is a perfect opportunity to make peace with Christ. I have confessions from 5:00 – 6:00 P.M. and Fr. Kevin Thompson has confessions from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Everyone is welcome!

Immaculate ConceptionGod chose Mary the Immaculate Conception to be our “model of Holiness”. At Mary’s conception, a new way of being human happened, and we are “chosen, destined” to share it. Adam and Eve were tricked by the serpent’s “conception.” The yes of Mary at the Annunciation, the culmination of the Immaculate Conception, undoes the disobedience of Eden and makes paradise a possibility once again for us.

Fr. Grieco

DEACON LACHLAN

As Catholics we are always interested in any news items coming from the Vatican. Last week two stories in particular caught my attention. A very “ordinary” priest, who almost didn’t make it to his ordination, Father Stanley Rother, has become the first martyr of the Catholic Church born in the United States. When he was in the seminary, he struggled with his studies and some of his professors almost gave up on him. Stanley persevered with his academic preparations, and was ordained for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. This humble priest, from a poor farming family ……. who shed his blood for the faith…. was a farmer from Okarche, Oklahoma, who served the Church as a devoted priest in the Oklahoma mission to Santiago Atitlan, in Guatemala. The recognition of his martyrdom clears the way for the beatification of this priest of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City.

Father Rother served as a missionary in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala, for 13 years. He was gunned down at the age 46 in the rectory of his church. Government officials there put the blame on the Catholic Church for the unrest in the country that they said led to his death. While his body was returned to Oklahoma, his family gave permission for his heart and some of his blood to be enshrined in the church of the people he loved and served. A memorial plaque marks the place.

The other story which I found interesting and inspiring, is about an Italian teenager, Carlo Acutis. This week, Cardinal Angelo Scola closed the diocesan phase in the

canonization process for Carlo, a 15-year-old Italian boy who died in 2006 of leukemia. He loved computer programming, film editing, website creation and editing comics. He also devoted himself to prayer and daily Mass. Carlo was gifted at anything related to computers so that his friends, and adults with computer engineering degrees, considered him a genius.

One of his most significant computer ventures was cataloguing all the Eucharistic miracles of the world. He started the project when he was 11 years old, and wrote at the time, “The more Eucharist we receive, the more we will become like Jesus, so that on this earth we will have a foretaste of Heaven.” He then asked his parents to start taking him to all the places of the Eucharistic miracles, and two and half years later the project was completed. He researched over 136 Eucharistic miracles that occurred over the centuries in different countries around the world, and have been acknowledged by the Church, and he collected them into a virtual museum. Carlo once said, “To always be close to Jesus, that’s my life plan.” In his brief life on earth he achieved that goal and remained close to Jesus in whatever he did, whether it was praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament for hours, creating websites, or going to school….just like every other teenager.

Two very ordinary people……like us…..whose ‘ordinary’ lives were dedicated to the greater glory of God.

May almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen
