Prelude Largo Corelli

Welcome and Announcements (Please sign the Welcome Book and pass it to your neighbor.)

*Congregational Introit Third Sunday of Lent Adapt. Gouin *Call to Worship from Psalm 63 (* Please stand as you are able.)

One: O God, you are my God, I seek you, my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water All: I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. One: Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.

All: I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands and call on your name.

*Hymn O God, You Are My God Alone No. 696

*Call to Prayer

*Litany of Lament One: God, our hearts are weary, broken, and sad.

All: Grief follows us; pain is our companion on the road.

We are divided: parents against children, brother against brother, sister against sister, half-nation against half-nation.

One: The sins of our past have revisited us. All: They were just beneath the surface, covered in a coat of whitewash. We are newly aware of our complicity.

One: We mourn our blindness. All: We regret our apathy. One: We weep at the state of our world. All: We wish we had done things differently.

One: We grieve the wrongs done by us and by others All: and reap a harvest of shame.

One: We open our hearts before you; All: we are vulnerable and at your mercy. One: Let your will be done to us. Refine us in your fire.

All: We purpose ourselves now to walk steadfastly and humbly through the chafing grief and the ache of suffering, out to where the mercy falls.

Silent Prayer

*Kyrie Lord Have Mercy Upon Us Arr. Johnson

*Assurance of God’s Steadfast Love from Lamentations One: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, God’s mercies never come to an end;

they are new every morning; great is God’s faithfulness. All: “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in the Lord.”

*Response Let Us Return to the Lord

*Sharing the Peace (11:00 a.m.)

One: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you, All: and also with you. One: Let us share that peace with one another.

*Affirmation of Faith from the United Church of Canada We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. Thanks be to God.

*Hymn God, How Can We Forgive No. 445

Time with Our Children

Offering of Tithes and Gifts

Offertory Anthem Out of the Depths I Cry to You Grotenhuis Chancel Choir

Out of the depths I cry to you on high; Lord, hear my call. Bend down your ear and listen to my sigh, forgiving all. If you should mark our sins, who then could stand? But grace and mercy dwell at your right hand. I wait for God; I trust his holy word; he hears my sighs. My soul still waits and looks unto the Lord; my prayers arise. I look for him to drive away my night – Yes, more than those who watch for morning light. Hope in the Lord: unfailing is his love; in him confide. Mercy and full redemption from above he does provide. From sin and evil, mighty though they seem, His arm almighty will his saints redeem. Amen.

* A Lenten Doxology *Prayer of Dedication

Loving God, accept these our gifts, we pray. Bless them and use them to bring peace to places of unrest, love to places of hate, joy to places of fear, and hope to places of loss. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Prayers of Joy and Concern and the Lord’s Prayer Lord in your goodness: Hear our praise; Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

*Hymn Jesus Knows the Inmost Heart (vv. 1 - 3) No. 427

*Benediction

*Response Jesus Knows the Inmost Heart (v. 4) No. 427

Jesus knows the inmost heart: nothing can be hidden. Jesus knows the inmost heart: nothing can be hidden.

So our faith will be restored by the word of Christ our Lord; for the warmth his love imparts melts the very hardest hearts.

Lenten Symbols Art and color can be

visual enhancement for worshiping God. Purple is the liturgical color

for the Seasons of Lent and Advent, signifying preparation.

The banner above the pulpit

was created by CPC member Marilyn Davidson.

Jesus remains the central portion of the banner with side panels changing each Sunday.

Various symbols connected to each week’s biblical text

are being placed on the Table during Lent.

• Ash Wednesday: a bowl of ashes • First Sunday of Lent: A jar of desert

sand and pebbles signifying Jesus in the Wilderness

• Second Sunday of Lent: feathers “…gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings.”

• Third Sunday of Lent: fig tree “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it….”

Walk to Jerusalem is a six-week Lenten program designed

to encourage congregational members to make small changes

and simple lifestyle improvements to grow in faith and health

in Lent and beyond. A devotional dimension to the program

reminds us of the connection between health in body and spirit.

The congregational aspect of this program reminds us we are

one in the Spirit!

Throughout this Lenten Season, through walking and other

physical and/or spiritual activities, CPC will Walk to Jerusalem from

Cary! 6106 miles between now and Easter!

Anyone and everyone can participate, regardless

of age or physical fitness level. Activities are not just walking,

but can include jogging and running, yoga, other forms of

exercise, and include activities such as daily Bible reading,

prayer, church attendance, and specific spiritual disciplines.

These activities all earn miles, which are detailed in the Walk to

Jerusalem Packet available on Ash Wednesday and beyond.

Throughout the six weeks of Lent, log your ‘mileage’!

We’ll track our progress on the Walk to Jerusalem each week

via the foyer bulletin board. You can bring a weekly log or use

the online form at this URL: http://tinyurl.com/yxlckgtf

For complete information about ideas, pick up a packet

of information in the church. The packet may also be accessed

online at https://tinyurl.com/y3yre8tv. Information will be available

as well through a special E-link communication weekly

on Friday throughout Lent.

The Good Friday Experience

Call for presenters and vocalists! On Friday, April 19, at 6 p.m., our Fellowship Hall will be transformed

into the home of Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy disciple of Jesus.

CPC disciples of all ages are invited to share this night with others

who wonder at Jesus’ life and death on the cross. We will share a

meal together and hear testimonies in speech and song. For this

evening, we need 6-7 presenters (adults, youth, and 1 or 2 children)

to dramatically present a biblical encounter with Jesus. We also

need 2 to 5 people or groups to present a song (for example, The

Lord’s Prayer). We invite you to make this evening a memorable

experience by your presentation. To participate, please contact

Medora Hix by email at [email protected] or call

919-467-8700 by March 24. Scripts are provided and memorization is

helpful, but not essential.

The Way; Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus. Embark on a journey this Lent: walk in Jesus’ footsteps during the course of

his ministry. Along the way, you will listen to Jesus teach, see him perform

miracles, spend time with his friends and followers and you, yourself, will be

transformed. This study is not just about geography but about discipleship.

Accept the challenge to a greater commitment to Jesus as Lord of our lives.

Wednesdays through April 10. Soup supper is at 6:00 p.m. with study from

6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Rms 220-222. Led by Medora Hix and Duane Hix.
